  • I show you how to restore your old game consoles and video games that have turned yellow. I originally saw this method of the 8-bit guy's channel and figured I'd put it to the test for myself.

    Is always better to do it with a led uv light box and hydrogen peroxide in liquid form and is marblelization free. Only takes 24hrs in the box.

    • @bstar777777
      @bstar777777 Před 7 měsíci

      Problem is that 1 gallon of 20% hydrogen peroxide is around $30 and can only do one side of the SNES. It will also evaporate and likely not be enough to do the second side. What does work is the hydrogen peroxide vapor approach where you just seal your box and put a tray of the 20% hydrogen peroxide in it. It will evaporate and still bleach the plastic. You will also only use a small amount of the hydrogen peroxide.
      My 1990 SNES needed over a week to get to where it needed to be with the vapor approach. It was ultra yellow... I've actually never seen a more yellow unit. If you can spare 7-10 days I think this is the best approach because the result is always flawless. I also think the SNES is unique in how long it takes to properly retrobrite so other plastics will probably bleach much faster.

    While the main case is a chemical reaction in the plastic, I wouldnt entirely rule out the possibility of the nicotene causing some contributory yellowing

    A few days ago, I got a SNES. I got it for trading in some movies at a local shop (price was $70). It is in great shape and isn't the slightest bit yellow. It doesn't appear to have been chemically brightened. I think I need to run over it with a magic eraser (or perhaps a pencil eraser), which should help remove any dirt lodged in the texturing of the plastic.
    It isn't very dirty inside but I want to go in to check the capacitors anyway so it will get a good cleaning soon.
    I think this one spent most of its life in a box because the warning sticker next to the power button is completely intact.
    The weird thing about the yellowing is that some yellow more than others and I have seen ones with one half of the case yellowed and the other not. I haven't been able to verify it but it has been suggested to me that they used different chemicals in different lots of plastic and some won't yellow.

    I'm going to have to try this now on a stormtrooper helmet, either that or, in going to have to get some gloss white spray paint. Luckily, it is not too badly yellowed but it is still noticeable as it is only on the front left of the helmet.

    I was wondering why my Super Nintendo never turned yellow; my family's had it since '94. A little advice for those who still have that nostalgic gray look to your SNES's: keep them safe under a desk, and go easy on the lights in the room it's in, they'll remain gray much longer.

    • @DancingwithGhosts
      @DancingwithGhosts  Před 8 lety

      yeah it was news to me that just the light in your house can turn it yellow over time. Some people go to extreme lengths to prevent this including putting UV filters over their lights in their house.. which i guess makes sense if you're a collector i just don't know if i would go to that legnth

    • @fentoonskiPWNER
      @fentoonskiPWNER Před 7 lety +1

      It wasn't the chemical on its own causing it. Nintendo was shit at making plastic at the time so they could have put too much or too little bromine into some of the molds. So some are yellowed and others will probably stay gray forever.

    • @scooter_b123
      @scooter_b123 Před 6 lety

      When originally released. All the originals had a chemical in the plastic that turned them yellow. It's not a mystery. Yours was a second wave.

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII Před 4 lety

      The problem with yellowing plastics still exists in the 21st century.
      I have a white PS3 Dual Shock controller that half-yellowed. I bought a later white DS3 that hasn't yellowed.
      I have an HRAP 2 joystick case which has yellowed but NOT the white plastic that holds the PCB for that joystick!
      They made a similar joystick for a licensed HRAP, also white plastic, but neither of these cases (2009/2010 vintage) have yellowed on me and they were bought within a year of the older HRAP 2 (2008 vintage)!
      Some of the factories cheaped out or weren't diligent with the chemical mixes for the plastics.
      I haven't done anything special for these joysticks... They're pretty much all sealed in boxes when I'm not using them. Heck, the HRAP 2 wasn't used for at least 5-7 years and it's just now I broke it out and find out it yellowed on me!
      I frankly think all the Retrobrite will do is bleach the plastic closer to its original color. It won't change the "chemical fate" of the plastic. That's built into the chemical formula of the plastic. !
      You're basically coloring plastic the same way people color their hair when it turns grey...

    My SNES broke almost 10 years ago and I was only like 9 when it did so I had no idea what was wrong with it or how to fix it. I took it out of my shed like 3 months ago and found out that the problem was the adapter port being broken. So I bought a new back panel, AC Adapter, and a soldering iron to fix it, which I did (it was my first time soldering anything). However, the adapter I bought I guess stopped working because the SNES doesn't turn on anymore. I heard that the off-brand adapters having a 9V output instead of 10V is an issue, which I hope is the case and not the SNES having a new problem. Anyway, it having been in the shed for so long has turned it extremely yellow, nearly brown, mostly on the top half. The bottom half is still grey with some yellowing on the front with the switches being completely brown and not blue or purple anymore. My bad for writing an essay, my point is I'm gonna try retrobrighting it lmao great video.

    • @skorpius752
      @skorpius752 Před 4 lety

      You probably need to reflow all of your solder joints. They get brittle and the metal forms a honeycomb structure over time, causing too much resistance for the board to work. You couls also have some bad capacitors.

    • @Cobalt985
      @Cobalt985 Před 3 lety

      Smoke isn't the main cause of ABS plastic yellowing, ABS just yellows over time. Chairs aren't made out of ABS, it's a completely different thing happening. But yeah, smoke particles could've easily deposited themselves and contributed to the plastic turning yellow. Not the nicotine itself but the tar and a bunch of other shit.

      Honestly go buy a black light or a uv light even a black light bulb for lamps (not the cheap ones under $4) and make an exposure box even out of cardboard. Do exactly the same thing as the video shows with the chemical. The issue here is the black light is angled and the shells were not getting direct uv exposure. Now it the black light was hung above it and closer they results would have been way better. Seen a lot of videos on this subject.

  • @aegis062
    @aegis062 Před rokem

    I noticed that most ppl who do this to restore their console are using the wrong UV light it is taking you guys days to get the yellowing out because the light is too far away not concentrated enough or you aren't using a stronger light bulb.
    For great result I used 100w black light. one to the left and one on the right for 4 hr I did change it's position every hr and the yellowing was gone. I did over do it on my test run on a snes shell and over bleached the console. I did it for 8hr and had added way more salon care.

      from my understanding the UV-light is an important component to this process and if you submersed the case in peroxide it might interfere with the light hitting everything evenly.. plus you need a solution with a very concentrated amount of peroxide and to my knowledge, only the paste has a strong enough concentration to work effectively.. however i'm sure you could try it out yourself it might work

    So does the heat itself really make it yellow? maybe that explains why some consoles get yellow, I've been living in my house without air conditioning for over 20 years, was thinking if the heat itself was the cause.

    • @phillipmennor2585

      Heat as well as direct sunlight and florescent lights can cause yellowing. Also, if you store your consoles in an area with extreme temperature swings, like an attic or a garage can cause yellowing, even if boxed up, as well as wreak havoc on the internals.

    Cigarette smoke definitely does turn (or quicken) the colour of these plastics. But UV/heat also. I got a SNES from CEX here in the uk, their site has stock photos so no idea what I'd actually get. It came as grey as it must've been in the 90s, more I'm scared to even have my curtain open that the console's closest too lol. Might put a sheet over the cubby holes where my retro consoles are. My dreamcast from CEX weren't so lucky though, need to give that a whitening. Some tips though, a bright incandescent light or 24 hrs+ of being left in the sunlight, using a big zip lock back instead of cling film (to avoid blotchiness) or best it to leave fully submerged in 40 cream developer in a plastic tub.

    Couldn't you just use hydrogen peroxide?

    • @DancingwithGhosts
      @DancingwithGhosts  Před 3 lety

      the hydrogen peroxide liquid isn't nearly strong enough to make a difference

      @fentoonskiPWNER Před 7 lety

      Other than it turning yellow the plastic will become weaker. Thats why you sometimes see people who have some of the casing cracked off in the corners or near the air vent.

    I cringed everytime you said Chrono Trigger wrong. I try not to be a jerk about these kind of things, but the letter "A" is not present in Chrono Trigger. It's pronounced Cr-oh-no.

    • @DancingwithGhosts
      @DancingwithGhosts  Před rokem

      well the reason why you take it apart is because you eventually have to wash the bleach cream off the plastic and you couldn't really do that if it was the full console because water could get inside and mess up the components
