A cover of the Hendrix classic on slightly unconventional instruments: a mandolin, a ukulele bass and a cajon. Shot on a Canon rebel T3i, edited in Pro Tools and Sony Vegas
Your amazing technique and versatility doesn't stop you from staying true to the emotion captured in the original song. It's never "look what I'm able to pull off", always "here's my humble service to the spirituality of music".
Every once in a while you find yourself on CZcams, and you stumble upon something that you're not sure you're gonna like, and end up being blown away. This is one of those instances. What an amazing piece of music. I quickly saved it to my favorites. Thanks for sharing and keep making music for us all to enjoy
Jimi Hendrix wrote one of the most beautiful songs. You did it justice but on the mandolin. I'm very impressed. I really need to learn this melodic song on the guitar one day. Fantastic job!
Your first video I saw was Sultans of Swing. That was a great cover, and I didn't think you'd be able to top that. But you killed it with this one. I've never heard anyone cover Jimi like this. WELL DONE.
As a 61 year old guy whose first album was Hendrix, and who worked security details for Clapton and Stevie Ray, I can give this a very honest thumbs up. Great job!
I always felt like this song ended too soon, almost like it was unfinished. Maybe it's better left to the imagination... like in Keats' Ode on a Grecian Urn.
Dude, I am almost 58 years old and always sought the most unusual yet coherent music, and you my good man are the best. Just when I thought the young generation is lost, you come along and totally redeem them. You keep on keepin on man, you are a light that needs to shine.
What else is better than a natural voice and acoustic instrument like you are doing ! amazing again and again what ever i listen what you play and sing !
Nice cover! It's such a delicate song that it's hard to play just right on guitar, but you've absolutely mastered this arrangement! It makes me want to re-learn the guitar version!
quite genuinely my favourite version of this song that i've ever heard. And i don't say that lightly. Beautiful arrangement. You sang it absolutely perfectly, didn't try to over-sing, just sang within your vocal limitations & did it beautifully. Not usually big on covers, but you knocked this out of the park.
Damn dude. You are one incredibly talented and creative individual. Nicely edited as well. May music pay off for you and always make you happy for all the work you've put into it.
You are probably one of the most interesting musicians on all of CZcams. Is there any stringed instrument you haven't mastered? I'm waiting for you to pull out the pedal steel.
Forgot about this little number you did some years ago now. Josh you're my favorite these days. I will always follow you. Keep making this old chef happy dude.
Not only did you capture the essence and the soul, but you did it with an unmatched style and owned it. Hats off, lighter in the air, feeling that deep soul brother.
Every time I watch one of Josh's videos I think there should be a voice-over of his mother or father near the end shouting "Josh, put down the guitar and take out the trash like I asked you to an hour ago!!" Josh...the trash can wait. Just keep playing!
Lucky for me, I've only been waiting for this for about 30 years. Thank goodness I wasn't born in the 1950s or I'd have been waiting for this for like 50 years... Better late than never, I guess. Hahahaha.
This is absolutely my favorite Hendrix song. I don't know what I expected, but this was better. You found that sweet spot between staying true to the original (showing respect), while still making it your own version (the Art). Well done, Sir. Well done, indeed... :)
BRAVO BRAVO 👏 👏 👏!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dam Good son. You dont learn Soul, Rhythm and timing like this, you are blessed with it. Keep up the awesome work and it will pay off ten fold Bro.
I loved being stoned on a warm summer day with a nice breeze going and this song playing on the radio. Ahh... The good ole days. This was a fantastic version of the song. Thanks!
You are a Master. enjoy your videos Josh. Everyone who plays the Mandolin is blessed as it is the greatest little musical instrument that was ever invented. I bought my first mandolin when I was in my late fifties. I had never played it before and when I got it into my hands, suddenly I discovered I was playing like I was born with it in my genes. I am now eighty one and still learning and playing and finding that the Mandolin has no limits. What a great experience it is for me and I thrill to hear people young and mature enjoying its difference voices. Thanks for sharing. Marie Mandolin. Do visit me and share.
Good for you.... I checked out the date I bought the mandolin and found I was actually in my sixties when I bought the instrument. I went to a music store for a mike and they were having a sale. The clerk talked me into buying the Mandolin . I had never played it in my life and in fact, I did not like the sound of it even when I heard it played. But bought the instrument seeing as it was on sale and brought it home. However on the way home I was not to happy with myself for buying it and thought I would sell it. But when I tried it a week later I just played it. Surprised me completely. LOL. Have been enjoying it since. Glad you are taking it up. Just relax and enjoy and you will find it coming easy. I have lessons on my channel that might help you. Happy playing and as you say Rock On. Marie
***** Wow! ...Amazing story....And I felt bad because I took off a lot of years and started "back" playing the guitar at 55 yrs old...Hats off to you !! My dad is 84...He used to play guitar all the time....I try constantly to get him playing again...He refuses....I just feel like it would add so much happiness to his life....He seems so depressed....Really frustrating .....I also picked up the mandolin around 10 years ago...but eventually decided I needed to concentrate on one instrument so I dropped the mandolin and went back to guitar.....I don't know...Maybe I should have dropped the guitar and stayed with the mandolin instead....someone told me just the other day "good guitar pickers are a dime a dozen and good mandolin players are rare"......Oh well.....It wouldn't be the first mistake I've made in my life....And hopefully it wont be the last....lol.....Again, thank you Marie for sharing your story ! ....You are an inspiration !!!
Beautifully done! I've got to say I prefer this to any cover I've heard - and that includes all the famous players. So many fall into the trap of trying to "out-Hendrix Hendrix", but the understated quality of your version that lets the simple beauty of the song shine out just blows them all away.
A truly wonderful mandolin cover of a classic tune. Thank you, Josh. You are an extraordinarily talented young man, and I hope you're grateful for all the gifts the heavens have bestowed upon you. Be well, work hard and never lower your standards.
Very tastefully done, with great technique, a great arrangement, and great vocal chops! I hope you're out there sharing your talents in your local musical neighborhood -- talent like this needs to be shared and appreciated outside of the living room (unless, of course, you're at *Daryl's House*!). ;- )
Great video. I tried it on guitar but found it too hard. The fact that you can play it on a mandolin and do the bass and the drums is impressive. I really want to see you playing The Battle of Evermore.
Can you imagine if you went back in time to oh say like during the civil war and you were in camp and you just bust out with this song and seeing all of the WTF looks on the soldiers faces and knowing full well they've never heard ANYTHING like this before !!🤣
Your amazing technique and versatility doesn't stop you from staying true to the emotion captured in the original song. It's never "look what I'm able to pull off", always "here's my humble service to the spirituality of music".

Little Wing is such a gentle song and I really like now the mando conveys a similar gentleness. You did a really nice job with this sweet rendition.
it’s gentle but when that solo hits. goddamn i go crazy.

And just like the OG version, I wish it was longer...
Words. Out of my mouth.
BRILLIANT
I bought a guitar from you, haha
as a mandolin player, I saw this and the first though was "I'm going to be jealous, aren't I?" And I was right
The effort you put into this was so worth it. I'm certainly one of a great many who keep coming back to listen to this over and over. Thank you.
This is amazing, can't stop coming back to this every few years
Damn, that was good bro! Never thought I'd hear Hendrix on mandolin, but you definitely pulled it off. Huge thumbs up. Keep it up.
Patricio Mercado-Noel Check out Jim Richter's mandolin cover of "Voodoo Child". It's an absolute screamer.
+MagnificentFiend. Thank you very much for the recommendation. You're right, Richter's solo version is quite impressive.Good day.---Patricio
"Huge thumbs" yep, cuz thats what you need to play this song
I think that's my 100th time watching this. I simply can't get enough, such a well-constructed and melodic cover!
I watched this multiple times over the last year and it blows me away every time... genius
Now I have seen it all!! Hendrix on a mandolin. Absolutely brilliant!!
Is it me or there is a head of an old lady in the mirror?
lol
Must be whoever Josh sacrificed to get all that skill.
Tri Nguyen I see it
Must be the acid you dropped.
You've said too much.
you deserve fame and riches man. by far one of thee most talented musicians on youtube
Such a warm, mellow and beautiful arrangement! Great!
Absolutely beautiful cover! I will be sharing and listening to this multiple times over!
What else is better than a natural voice and acoustic instrument like you are doing !

Nice cover! It's such a delicate song that it's hard to play just right on guitar, but you've absolutely mastered this arrangement! It makes me want to re-learn the guitar version!
I love this track. Thanks for doing it justice!!! Great voice, Great mandolin, great bass and great drum box. 👏🏻

Beautiful rendition sounds awesome. Love how you keep it interesting and fun.
Damn dude. You are one incredibly talented and creative individual. Nicely edited as well. May music pay off for you and always make you happy for all the work you've put into it.
This is unreasonably good and makes my Sunday better. Thanks.
Absolutely beautiful!

Oh man that would be so killer
Timothy Cardner He and Scallon should collab
Alduin62119
Y E S
justin jonson
XLBiker13 Jimi hendrix could've done better no offense. And Jimi had a better voice.
When it was about time for the solo I thought "no way he's about to play it on that mandolin" but you did
Way
That was amazing! Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy your videos.
Beautiful! It made my night to listen to you :) Thank you and happy belated Thanksgiving

the moment that he says: "YOU...YOU..." with the forefinger remember?

This is a "real" instrument & that is real playing.
A beautiful rendition of a great classic. Thanks Josh.
Dude, this is just beaultiful! BRAVO!

Unusual, elegant , original and ...YES , Beautiful !!!!!! Great interpretation !
Your instruments are always clean and shiny. Not a single fingerprint or smudge, just lovely textured wood. Such respect you have for your craft.
Damn, love the song, love josh turner, love this version. thank you josh.
You are a natural. There is SO much jazz in it. So delicate, it swings away on its own.
Every time I watch one of Josh's videos I think there should be a voice-over of his mother or father near the end shouting "Josh, put down the guitar and take out the trash like I asked you to an hour ago!!"
Josh...the trash can wait. Just keep playing!

Wow. I would not have thought that was possible. Gorgeous.
This is so good. Makes my brain go crazy and satisfied. Congratulations!

Hey Lad, straight in my Head! Not only one of my favourite Hendrix tunes, but one of my all-time favs anyway, and you did it amazing!!!!!!
this video makes me want to quit guitar, and there isnt a guitar in it.
hahaha same
He's better at mandolin than I am at guitar!
The kid is just plain better......My guitar and mandolin are starting to look like kindling....Jimi would love this....
you must be super pompous. don't marginalize your own efforts by boasting over what others cannot do YET, or diminishing the value of a compliment.
Pompous self marginalization.....interesting concept....
When you like a video before it starts because its gonna be good
Lol! Agreed. He hasn't disappointed yet.
When you like a comment before you read it because you know it’s good
How awesome it is to be able to come up with ones own version of all instruments of one of the most fantastic tunes in human kind!
wow, I was not expecting this combo of instruments.
Sounds great

Lindo fraseamento rítmico no mandolim. Maravilhosa interpretação de Little Wing.
Just came across this. Beautiful. Best version I ever heard.
i love it! an amazing work and a beautiful tribute to my favourite song ever
AWESOME...I love the clothes hanging up on the door handle. Plus, the Beatles poster. Great job, Josh.
That's a really strange thing to take from this performance. "hey dude I like the way your doorknob dresses"
Hands up I thought at first "oh this is going to be bad" then I was like "oh this freaking awesome" Well done sir.
Magnificent, well filmed and played
Well done sir! I really enjoyed how well you emulated all the licks and fills. Great solo!!! Keep up the hard work man!!!
You're awesome and inspiring Josh!! keep it coming... Thanks!!
Beatles For Sale poster on the wall--- can't go wrong with that
You remind me more and more of young Joni Mitchell because you're so immensely talented and trying to make the best music you can.
for the sake of humanity please keep on making these covers, you are love.
I’m speechless. Astonishing!!!!!
Brilliant. This song has been covered by everyone and you make it yours. You rock -- err pluck -- or something.
CZcams is slacking if it’s taking 9yrs to recommend this to me .
That's an awesome mandolin. Love finding a new fellow mandolin player. Such a great instrument, we have to keep it alive!
Such a modest batch of instruments for a truly beautiful sound. Top notch.
Gov.
Best because it is a unique rendition and most important of all your talent
Keep it up
OK, I didn't see this one coming. Unconventional. Great.
This is way to cool! Jimi would love this version, i know he would. You have soul too.
that was way cooler than i expected well done my dude
Every time the song ends for Little Wing, I feel so sad. This was an awesome cover
This is fantastic.

great stuff... wish it didnt fade out... wanna hear the whole thing. Nice work.
Great video. You're very talented.
Never fails to impress...great work...
Holy crap! This just makes me feel complete, I've always just heard Hendrix's version, but this is just incredible!
Bro you straight killed it! Mad bass and mandolin skills. I'm jealous
Awesome, great vocals :)
Ultra cool! Thanks for the post. You are immensely talented.
Sweet, one of my absolute favourites !
Beautiful!!! :D

That solo made tear up, my man. Great job.
Bloomin' heck, that was epic!
Love Little Wing. Love the mandolin. Kinda wish he took more liberties, but beautiful work.
He has the chops.....when inspiration hits, he'll be ready....
Great video. I tried it on guitar but found it too hard. The fact that you can play it on a mandolin and do the bass and the drums is impressive. I really want to see you playing The Battle of Evermore.
thanks, Josh, keep making beautiful music!
Very good! Congratulations !!! Which tuning you use the mandolin? Since now I thank you for your attention!
you are a very talented person.. the playing, singing and recording are all perfect
Josh Turner I would love it if you'd tab out the mandolin intro to this cover.
Can you imagine if you went back in time to oh say like during the civil war and you were in camp and you just bust out with this song and seeing all of the WTF looks on the soldiers faces and knowing full well they've never heard ANYTHING like this before !!🤣
Don't bet on that. :) ....
It takes a lot of feeling to make a good Hendrix cover... you nailed it!
This is SICK!!!!!! Great Job.....Love it
First time to hear actually good jim cover... Man you sing good!
You don't know who SRV is?
