    I think you could baste or steam a seam that back fold down, and then just quilt down that join channel from the back, and it would come out great! All the perks of machine joining without that one long rando line of stitching right at the join. OR lean into it (choose different backing fabrics and make that look on purpose) and then use a zigzag or decorative stitch and make that purposefully pop edge stitch. I love tutorials that leave room for new ideas to come into your head! Yay!

    Angela, I feel that you will FOREVER be the Queen of Machine Quilting for so, SO, many reasons (I dare someone knock you off that pedestal). If what I say next breaks the rules, please do remove my comment.
    I find it funny that about 10 days ago I stumbled across Pattern Poole TV which is ALL about QAYG. I see my life FINALLY coming together when I combine the best of both worlds. Firstly, ALL of your extensive knowledge that you share so freely share with all of us is amazing and I really am trying to suck it all up, and then if I can add it to what I just learned at Pattern Poole (I am sure there are others but I am now bought in to this one), I can conquer the world!!
    I say that because I have a machine quilter who is super reasonably priced, but she is what I used to consider elderly when I was (not so much) younger. When I price other machine quilting services I want to fall down, and have been thinking about what my next step will be!!! I will NOT revert back to hand quilting. Been there, Done that, and it is over for me. But if I spend my time doing as you say and do, and then add what I learned from You just now, and Pattern Poole QAYG video, I can live on!!
    I must thank you for every wonderful quilting video you share with us. I am not sure how you do it all. Sorry so extensive, but I guess I saved it up.

      I am doing the same, combining Monica Poole’s quilt as you go methods with Angela Walter’s free motion quilting. Now, I evaluate each pattern I see as to how it will work with these two things together. I’m quite enthusiastic about it. Near the beginning of my quilting journey. So much to learn.

    I made a large quilt top and was not sure how I would quilt it on my domestic. Then I saw a technique in a book from the 1980s. It recommended dividing the batting in thirds. So I made a quilt sandwich with batting only down the middle. Once that was quilted I added batting to one side, quilted it and repeated on the other side. It worked well as batting is usually the bulkiest part. This method works well even if the borders have been added. You have to really secure the quilt sandwich, especially the middle as the sides will have the finished quilt top and backing hanging loose as batting is added later.

    I made garments for almost 40 years. The fusible hem tape asked about in the video will work ...but only for a short time. After 3-4 washes it will come apart. It is best to use and sew it in.

    I actually saw this video after the live of you doing the free motion quilting at viewer request. I didn't really see the magnitude of it until I saw you introduce it on this video. I don't really do it because my health has kept me from being able to sew anymore and I guess I don't think about it anymore really. I hate that, but I wanted to tell you how Amazing you truly are for so many people! I appreciate everything you do for people all over the world! You have a special gift and don't mind sharing it with others in a world of people who would rather make money from what sets them apart from others. It says a lot about your character as a person that you give so much of yourself for free, that you share your gift! You are valued as a person and I hope maybe you read this comment. If not, I hope you realize how remarkable you are without having to be reminded!! 🤗💙

    Thank you for explaining that Midnight Quilter will be back. Think we all miss that "one on one time" with other quilters. Would personally like to learn more about thread painting. Gave my youngest son National Parks annual pass and want to make posters of parks he has visited. I was wondering how to free motion (not sure swirls would go over well) thread painting is perfect

    First of all...I LOVE.LOVE.LOVE ♡♡♡♡ all your tutorials and Live Chats. I am just now finding you and watching replays of live chats. Thank you for all you teach and do.
    This live chat and also the tutorial video you did were exactly what I needed. I have a project I am working on and have been debating on how to put it all together. I just found my answer. Thank you. I can't wait to try this technique for QAYG.

    For an idea, I would love to see how you would quilt foundation paper piecing blocks. I have some super detailed fpp blocks that I have no clue how I would even start to free motion quilt them!

      Probably embarrassing myself but I don’t get foundation piecing. Can you help me understand? I guess I understand the English paper piece process with the card stock pieces but why use foundation paper. TIA

    • @mary-annz.reynolds7778
      @mary-annz.reynolds7778 Před 3 lety +3

      FPP is using paper to make blocks. Sugaridoo has lots of FPP tutorials and a sampler book to show lots of blocks. She's the best I've found. Irene from Sugaridoo teaches Foundation Paper Piecing and Freezer Paper Piecing.

    • @sarahpitcher3996
      @sarahpitcher3996 Před 3 lety

      @@laurapotter7529 so pretty much foundation paper piecing or FPP, is using a paper printed pattern which you then sew in order with specific colors. This style of sewing give sharp points everytime, you can create amazing pieces (like portraits of people, animals, characters or anything you can think of). I’m best known for extremely detailed FPP ( www.pitchersboutique.com ) I love designing but find that when making extremely detailed FPP that I am unsure of how to quilt them. Anyways, EPP is a piece of card stock that’s already cut to the size and shape, which you the lay the fabric over. FPP has no hand sewing at all!!!

    I have an aversion to QAYG😨. I’m not the best piecer. And I’m in the “that will quilt out” camp. But I’ve seen some intensely creative ways to use this method🤯. For me it’s just easier for me to quilt it once it’s a top. God bless those who find success with this method. This is such a fun tutorial. You did a great job explaining it! Thank you for sharing.

    For the borders you could leave some excess batting extending around all 4 sides of the finished rows then but that together with strips of batting using a large zig zag stitch then quilt each border onto that extension using quilt as you go.

    • @CherryBlossomHill
      @CherryBlossomHill Před 3 lety

      You can prepare the batting so it’s 1/4” less than the finished square/block/row so that there is no batting in the seams.

    How do you keep the seams (between pieced strips) from puckering, when you add extra quilting? Example: the added quilting on the table runner is a different design in each strip of fabric so you don’t cross the seam. Hope that makes sense.

  • @landarogers9926
    @landarogers9926 Před 3 lety

    Could you not spray baste backing to batting after fusing top to batting or could use fusible webbing in a few places to hold backing to batting? There was a demo on Nancy's Notions where she used fusible web to keep batting and backing in place. Was a little weight fusible.

    You left out the picture of the last step--hand sewing. It seems all the QAYG videos leave that step out, assuming you know what to do.
