I rode the Essex in 2002. Everyone was terrific. Worked out in the gym at 2am with the Marines. Great bunch. Parked of the island of Iwo Jima. It was like looking at hallowed ground. God bless them all.
Can’t believe you were on IWo Jima. That must have been thrilling. When the forces took control and suddenly all the ships started sounding their horns and whistles, that must have given a swell of pride.
@Bubbas32 imagine being so entitled as to not let the people who are literally protecting your ass from getting blown up have fun and celebrate independence day.
@Bubbas32 Wait until you figure out how much training costs. .50 tracer is not cheap, but it's multipurpose in terms of cargo space, and it gives the gunners the added benefit of a little bit of trigger time behind the guns. I don't know what you are expecting, but morale costs money, and I'm betting their getting a pretty good bang for their buck on this exchange.
Switch to the videos where police shove, beat, rubberball, pepperspray, teargas all kind of people - including Press - Senior Citizens - People on their own front porch - You name it. You are not so fucking free over there as you been indoctrinated to believe.
Well they maybe in a Target position during the Celebration but they always on alert,, somebody better not come closer or else they may celebrate fire on you..
That's really cool that they gave those sailors and marines as nice a Fourth of July as you can get at sea. Nice to see them letting loose with the guns and tracers like fireworks.
HOOYAH! This brings back memories for an old Navy Vet! Nothing like a cookout on the flight deck!!! It's an amazing awesome event to be apart of the whole crew is just laid back u get to wear board shorts, tee shirts, flip flops or reg shoes, & no cover required just a fun event with you & all your shipmates & even the commanding officers let loose we had a few of our go diving with us jumping off the lower decks & combined with great vibes & atmosphere with live music, Cornhole, basketball, football, bikes, anything really & after the food & drinks go down below deck & do some diving & swimming!! Then the night hits & with some music jamming our version of "fireworks" begin & you're front row! Tracers flying all over, flares, anything!!
These kids leave their homes and get on a ship or a tank or a plane or nothing and put their lives out in front of us. God bless every one of them. Just come home.

I always had great respect fort the Mess Specialists. They work their asses off to make sure morale stays at a basic level, and go the extra mile with stuff like this.
I agree. It's hard to make it a perfect 10 all the time but days like that, Thanksgiving, Christmas I'm sure they'll do their DAMNEDEST to make it a PERFECT 10 & beyond
What an awesome ship I remember when it was stationed out in Sasebo Japan and I lived there because my dad was in the navy and married my Japanese mom and he'd take me on base to see the Essex and seeing that big number 2 on the side captivated me and because of that I'm looking to serve
God I miss this. Prior USS Belleau- Wood LHA-3, Tarawa LHA-1, & Constellation CV-64 sailor. 14 years sea duty. Did this 12 times. The brillent blue water by day. And the amazingly beautiful night time sky. All the things I got to do, places I saw. Truely something I will never forget. I miss it.
It is an unbelievable sight to a Japanese barbecue, using charcoal fire on the flight deck of a US Navy landing assault ship. For soldiers who spend a long period offshore, it is necessary to take a break.
Although I am a Japanese, I would like to ride Essex once. BBQ at the flight deck seems to be very fun I also wanted to participate. However, it is hard work for usual training.
Imagine how crazy it would be if some lone fisherman would be sailing on a warm, silent night and then suddenly out of nowhere - tracer rounds start whizzing past all around him.
A massive barbecue, partying as a family, on a massive warship. Finish up with a gun fun-fest to create firework. That can't be anymore American than that :3
Excellent Memories - though most of my "Steel Beach Days" were on FRIGATE decks - thus SMALL parties. I was BLOWN AWAY later doing a Steel Beach in combination with Line-Crossing aboard USS Kitty Hawk in 1997 - the squadrons build POOLS from engine transport cases... a complete blast
I know this has been out for some time, but I still want to say THANK YOU , to the woman and men of the U.S. military, may you all stay safe and strong
Looks like fun, and probably a rare treat for most of the crew to be able to get on the flight deck. I just wonder how many footballs, and basketballs go into the drink. 🤔
God bless these men and women, and many others like them, apart from family for long stretches. Glad they can put on such an awesome celebration! They sure have... real fireworks...
when people ask me why I get free health care I tell them because I earned it. I said when I was eighteen years old I was in a foreign country away from my family. You were sitting in the living room on the couch with your mother. She kept her mouth shut after that!
You Squids know how to throw a party. I've been in the Army twice, I hated the "mandatory fun days". But that just looks like too much fun, I really gotta credit ya'll. Doing a .50 night live fire has got to be a training requirement probably a couple times a year, I'd do it on July 4th every year.
