- In this video I share with you a real-time tutorial for a fun and simple technique in which you remove the challenge of painting over an ink drawing... by putting the paint down first and then adding the ink lines afterwards. I am not a watercolour expert, far from it, so if I can do this then anyone can! You might not perfect it first time, but it's great fun and you can always try it again and again, aiming to improve a little each time.

Hi John, I do know what you mean, I haven’t fully grasped watercolour myself so I figured if I can do this then anyone can! I think in terms of painting this, there’s not really any right or wrong because you can just slap it on and let the paint do its own thing. Did you know, there is something called Gesso. It is a white paste and you can make texture with it. Just apply a thinner or thicker uneven amount with a brush or palette knife, it can look like wood. And paint over it. Watercolor will be fine, but it will react differently. I painted a door like this once with this technique and it was a real fun thing to do with a stunning result! You can get Gesso in the dollarstore or any art supplies store.
Just wanted to let you know that this exists. Because I didn’t know before. You can make every surface paintable with watercolor with this. Some brands (like Schmincke for example) call it “Aquaground”. Have a nice day and thank you for the video!

Absolutely love this and will certainly be giving it a go. I found you when looking for Steven Reddy information. So glad I searched! I’m very much a beginner in watercolor and sketching and realizing that I’m really drawn to this style. Now I just need to find my own version of it.

You will find your own way of doing things for sure, I talked about this in another video but I found my style by just repeating the same scene over and over, doing each sketch a different way until I found what worked for me. Maybe worth a try. One day we might be as good as Steven is!

Hello, yesterday I watched your video of you first attempts and thought you were very brave ton fill in this gap in the video urban sketching market. Like you I spent ages squiggling and bemoaning my efforts. I suffered from the syndrome of thinking never in the whole universe had anybody been so bad at art! I wanted to draw like Picasso and when I couldn’t just sank in to despair.

Thank you! I have done one or two watercolour videos previously but you’re right this is a very different technique for me. I like experimenting, it’s part of the fun, and watercolour is much more open to experiments than marker pens. I also wanted to ask you if you could record a video doing real-time sketching using only pencils. I just bought a set of them and I'm having a hard time learning how to use them and apply the shadows; also, I haven't found a video like the one I just asked for 😔.
I really like landscape/urban drawing, but everyone only uses the pencil to do the outline and I really want to apply it to the entire drawing! So yeah, it would be great if you do it for a super beginner like me lol.

You’re right, I can’t think of a sketcher who only uses a regular pencil (not colouring ones), it’s mostly just used as the pre-sketch. Ironically, the video I have coming out today is about sketching without any pencil at all 😅 But yes I like your idea. What kind of pencils are you using? And is there a subject you have in mind? No promises but if I can I will give it a go,

This is so inspiring once again! Of course I sat and daydreamed watching you paint. But then I also gave it a try. I am quite happy with the result. it is a bit confusing for the perfectionist hamster in my brain. Because applying paint first and then the details I had to accept the colours not being right where they should be. (as opposed to doing outlines first and then filling in with colour, as in a colouring book). It really is a very good approach for letting loose.
I really enjoyed this one in real time.
As for the pencil marks, I saw some sketchers use a kneadable eraser to lift up some heavier marks before applying paint. But who cares about those lines? After paint and ink is applied, they get lost. Some even say they give character and personality. They are a sign of the drawing and painting process.

Happy you gave it a go already! I love the image of a hamster in your head spinning on a wheel saying “keep inside the lines, keep inside the lines…”
This technique allows the hamster a day off.
I don’t mind the pencil marks, if you keep them light they don’t really show. Putty erasers are great for reducing them if they’re too dark though.

Sketching in watercolour pencil means no pencil marks as blends in. Sometimes graphite can show through.
That’s a good tip, I didn’t have watercolour pencils to hand for this but light pencil marks weren’t visible by the end. Thanks, Donald.
i tried this tonight - TOTAL DISASTER! i only had a dark/medium blue and...oh boy what a mess
I feel your pain, I’ve had plenty of art disasters in my time. Well done for trying it. Hope you’re not put off trying again, it’s all good learning experience. The randomness of the technique means it’s different every time, next one might be great! Good luck 🙂
