1st semester was ok, 2nd semester was the slow beginning of me crashing out, missed the entire 3rd semester cuz I lost my mind, but 4th i came back strong and i’m finally okay again :)
I went to college in WA (my home state) for 2 years and studied psychology. I really thought that's what I wanted to do with my life, but eventually realized that it was not fulfilling or making me happy. In December I moved all the way to Chicago (by myself and away from everyone i know) to go to an art school for Interior Architecture, and it's the best decision I've ever made. Don't be afraid to take the leap and make a decision to better yourself!! ♡
OMG WHAT SCHOOL DID U GO TO IF U DONT MIND ME ASKING?😭 I’m a senior in high school and I want to go to a art school! I DID visit SAIC in Chicago(maybe thats where you went idk) and did their one week summer program but I’m wondering how actually living there is like? Idk if this makes any sense
@RosieDoodlez exciting!! I go to Columbia, I'm not well versed on SAIC so I couldn't offer a comparison. Columbia is in the heart of downtown, just a few blocks from millennium park and you definitely get the city experience! All the teachers there are either retired or current professionals in their fields and can offer a lot of insight and advice you might not get elsewhere. However it is a private school and VERY expensive so tread carefully 😅 Chicago is a beautiful city (despite the depictions of it from media) and I love living here. I hope you find the right school for you, best of luck! ☺️
To everyone who feels like they aren't fulfilled at their university, please please transfer!!!! It took me 2 and a half years for me to make up my mind and realize i was miserable at my old school so i finally transferred, and it's been one of the best decisions I've ever made. It can be scary and daunting to restart, but it can also make a world of a difference in your mental state and college experience. I chose a completely different major as well, so i won't be graduating on time but I don't regret it for a second!

I’m so so glad ur talking about transferring/not having the typical college experience. I had to come home because my mental health during college was so bad and I am now the only one out of all my cousins to go the trade school route instead of trying to finish my education. I felt so much shame at the start because I felt like I was letting down my family, but I was able to talk to my grandpa who is a respected figure in my family and he said it was more important that I was happy or at least contented with what I do with my life than follow a more worn-in path to personal misery. I’m so much happier at my trade school that’s in my home town than I was away at a school that I could barely afford and treated its students that weren’t doing grad school like trash. Also a lot of my high school friends didn’t really want to associate with me after moving back which just felt like a double kick to the face. It’s a lot harder socially, to make friends in the life position I’m in but I’d make the same decision twice if meant not having to set foot on that campus prison ever again.
As someone who is gonna start applying to colleges soon this really helps get an idea of what i want i also really resonate with pushing my art interest aside and leaning to picking a more "conventional" major ❤❤
thoroughly research your options! theres a whole host of factors that can make a less conventional major work for you! also talk to your college advisor once you are in college about career paths that align with your interests and areas of study.

OMG! thank you so much for talking about the part about making friends in college. As an incoming freshman in college that is what I AM SO SCARED ABOUT. You deff eased my worries!
My gf is transferring this upcoming fall because she went to a uni in a different city for her first year and it was just detrimental on her mental and physical health. She lost a lot of weight and got food poisoning several times, was in a single dorm and didn’t make that many friends. Apparently the conditions there were so bad that drop outs were common.
I’m starting my first year of art school after being on 2 gap years, while she’s coming back home to our local university, so it’s a new/different experience for both of us. For anyone else in a similar boat, just know it’s completely fine. Sometimes it takes a while to figure things out and not everything will work the way you want it to.
I’m glad you chose to do something that’s resonating more with you. I think the first year of uni is tough for a lot of people. My first year was really tough, and from what I’ve heard from my friends, a lot of them shared that sentiment. So yeah, it’s only gonna get better! :)
So glad another person is talking about transferring! I also transferred after freshman year and it was a hard but much needed decision. No one I knew transferred schools except for the community college to big public state school pipeline. Hope the rest of your college experience makes up for your freshman year!!

i recently transferred from community college (ive never been to a 4 year) so its really interesting to hear the transfer perspective from someone at a 4 year. at some point transferring was pretty much all me and my classmates would talk about but i guess the culture there is just different considering transferring is the expected route for us. deciding what school to go to was an emotional thing though for sure
I can relate I transferred from an art high school to a regular high school and it was one of the most stressful experiences I’ve had.

Only you know what's best for you!! Take the leap if you're able to and make yourself happy. Transferring isn't the end of the world, and you'll get all new experiences :)

i am from mexico and ive been studying a major in physics for 2 years already, since the beginning i knew i didnt like it as much, but i wanted to challenge myself and i thought that maybe if i tried harder and studied harder i could make it. in my second semester i really wanted to drop college but i wasnt brave enough, then almost in the end of my third semester i had a mental breakdown and it was literally the worst experience in my life. that made me realize i should leave. i always knew i wasnt happy studying there, but i was so scared of what would my parents or my friends think, i was also scared of leaving my friends, not knowing what to do next etc, etc. in my 4th semester (this year) i decided to finally leave. my dad wasnt that happy at the beginning, but with the time he accepted it, my mom was happy for me and also my friends. they told me that it is ok as long as that makes me happy. i already made the admission exam for a new career and i am so excited for a new beginning. i am kinda sad bc i took soo long for me to make this decision, but im glad that i finally made it !!!

hey everything you said was so relatable to me. the thing about putting off your needs to not inconvenience people, and the seasonal depression and the sneaking feeling of a boring, dingy rest of your life, switching my major and staying at the crap school (with a terrible reputation btw -- chose just because I was told to live near my family). My major right now is computational arts (most of it was java programming -- which i DESPISED). Right now i've applied and been accepted into a college known for its animation and arts department, for interaction design. but i think im self sabotating by making excuses not to go.
this video felt like a really nice thing to hear right now. I’m currently transferring to a different highschool junior year, and im really scared but I feel like the environment would be much better for me. This was a really helpful video,, and im so proud you made the decision to help yourself
12:08 i actually go to school in nyc and honestly my biggest tip is to explore all parts of the city, not just manhattan. like obvs manhattan is exciting and fun but the other boroughs offer a lot of nice things to do too :D

Yk I was devastated when I found out I had to take 4 whole years at the university I'm transferring to after taking 2 years at community college, like why do they do that?? But I'm excited for my major and I feel like community college really helped me adjust to college life 😊

i'm transferring this fall and it was a decision i really struggled with. my mental health also suffered a lot at my old school and my major was not what i expected. i made the most amazing friends and they kept me afloat but i couldn't shake the feeling that i needed to be somewhere else.
so, i applied to a couple of my old dream schools with the mindset that i probably wouldn't get in but i didn't want to regret not giving it a shot, and... i got into one! then came the really hard part, deciding whether or not to go.
it's such a scary and overwhelming prospect to uproot your whole life like that, especially when you are leaving your partner and best friends and extended family behind for a very far away school. still, i know i'll keep in contact with my friends (and even a few professors!) and i think i'll find my people there as well. i know it was the right descision for me! and now i get to leave for my dream school in two days :)
i transfered multiple times so i'm more used to the process now and my only advice is just be yourself. your enjoyment and comfort matters the most, don't try to be a certain way to fit in. i made the mistake of acting out of character for me just to keep people entertained and later that year i kept being reminded of the embarrassing things I did for laughs and felt.. disgusting. i wanted to transfer again to have a new start but i couldn't, so this new school year i told myself to be the way i want to be, not the way others want me to be. lesson of the year: focus on classes, focus on "romanticizing life" or simply living life YOUR way. if people still act like you're the same "idiot" last year, sit them down and be honest with them about how you want to be. remember, comfort over people pleasing.

I'm planning to pursue an illustration major! I've always been passionate about this degree, and really didnt ever resonate with any other field such a science, medical, etc. I was always interested in the arts field. My portfolio has to be done by next year, at least, which I'm striving to finish by the end of summer next year. I'm also aware of how much work and stress I'd be under academically wise due to my major, but am willing to go for it because drawing is something I've always wanted to do for a living. There's always been quite a stigma about taking a path in the arts field (money issues, debt, etc) but i really decided to want to experience this myself because I've been looking into it for so, so long.

It's my first year of uni also and it is rly horrible experience. During my first session I got depressed and got a lot of panic attacks. I don't feel like I have been realizing myself at all outside my uni, haven't made any friends (again not from uni), haven't gotten out of home a lot. Idk this year was an absolute disaster for me and I'm glad it's ending. I hope the 2nd year will be better at least a bit, cuz I like my major ;C

My story is kinda different, I went to a pre-college program in nyc at Pratt institute. It was really amazing as I really love art but it knew that it wouldn’t really be able to give me a stable job though. So I ended up applying somewhere else but still in nyc. I kinda regret not doing it but I’m just going to choose art as a minor cause I really don’t want to give it up.
I just finished my first year at university doing an illustration degree and its been so fun (I'm from the UK so it might be a bit different here). All the people are so incredibly nice and it's so easy to find people with similar interests... I'm not a party person either and a lot of the people in the course are pretty introverted (we're all just drawing in our rooms and watching anime at 3am lmao) so don't worry too much about the nightlife. The actual course material has also been pretty extensive and flexible to our interests :)) I hope you enjoy your next year of college a lot more and your mental health thrives too

This is probably going to be sound bad but I transferred twice:((( I first went to a very religious college that I met a lot of wonderful people at but the school just had too many restrictions and I felt like I was being treated like a child. So I transferred to my (what I thought was) my dream school. That school was not a dream at all and my mental health went through a huge spiral. So, I decided to transfer again to my current school and its going fine, I’m online right now but I will be going on campus in August but I already have a lot of people that are helping me which I love. Oh btw my major is Liberal Arts:)

I really could've used this video a few months ago. I was planning to leave my skl and move to a different one because of extreme stress and the absolute brain explosion I got there. But I ultimately decided to stay because one person told me to and it was a person I don't even like anymore. I regret it but I don't want to tell my parents because they'll be mad at me and its wayyy too late to change.
I feel like regret is one of the worst feelings ever to have and that staying could potentially cause more issues to arise. You really only have one life and I think even though it appears as if it’s way too late to change, it really might not be!!!

And the problem with changing schools is that it would do the same effect to my mind on trying to adjust and that would create equal stress so now I'm more comfortable with staying. As an incoming Freshman to college and just went through all this process! You must go with your gut!! You will feel which school is right for you! Also trying to tour as many as you can ! :) it can help, plus going to admitted student days those help sooo much ‼️ good luck with your process :)
