IU's true value is that she has been a successful singer-songwriter since she was a teenager. Her lyrics are very poetic and literary, and it's very unfortunate that there's a lot of loss when it's translated into English. Her lyrics are very rhythmical and rhyming, so in Korea, she is jokingly called 'Korean Hip Hop Top Number One'. Even rappers in the Korean hip-hop scene often answer "IU" to the question, "Who is the best in Korean hip-hop?" This shows the atmosphere of the Korean music industry, which avoids division within the hip-hop scene and recognizes IU's lyrics highly at the same time. (Also IU know this meme)

The thing that makes me impressed with IU is how she writes music, how she delivers her emotions in a song. It's definitely something special, and i agree she sounds like the recording when she sings live
Agree, this has to thanks to her initial 6 years debut period that her company has put her into all kind of different genre of songs, so that she pick up a tons of different technique throughout the journey.
Then when she renew her contract at her 23 after she finish her initial 7 years debut contract, she has accumulate sufficient skillset for her to produce her own song and planned out her discography
And even start her age series songs like Twenty Three(23yo, P.S she got another song called 23 which ain't her age series, instead used as her OST song for her to sing in the drama called Producer where she play as an idol too), palette(25yo), and Eight(28yo) and perhaps (i'm not sure because she never confirm this song as one of her age series too) Lilac (29/30yo not sure which because Korea just change their age counting system this year).
plus, she writes song since she was around 18-19 years old. the first song that she writes is "Hold my hand" release in 2011.
To think that her encores last another 1-2hours after the concert is over, is mindblowing to me. How doesn't she strain her voice?!?!?

If you have noticed, the encore song is a song from 2011. At that time IU had a far more "technically correct" way of singing with the support and the fuller voice you talked about. So she can absolutely sing that way whenever she wants to.
The songs she made in her 20s were mostly ones she wrote herself and the breathy style of singing she has throughout the video is a completely artistic choice she made and has also stated that she worked hard to develop that style for herself.
Regardless of her technique there is something about her voice that really speaks to me and even if there are obviously way more "powerful" singers out there, she is my absolute favorite one solely for that reason.

Actually IU sounds better live than the studio recording and she rearranged the songs to suit the band as she performs live with her own band. The last encore song was an ost song she wrote for the drama The Greatest Love when she was 17. It went viral recently when the concert performance was released on CZcams because of her cute action. It charted again😄
IU is the best example of how "Best Singers need not be best at singing",
It is not about having great range, belting, support etc , but how smartly one uses the voice to present the song in the most evocative manner
Her "Love Poem" has been covered by some fantastic vocalists like Sohyang, Ock Joo Hyun - when they sing, it is their vocal mastery that's prominent, but when IU sings, the song & its emotions are prominent.
And since she writes most of her work, she does customize the lyrics, the consonants, enunciation to fit her own unique delivery
In one of her interviews she talked about how she intentionally uses "Fricative" sounds, which singers typical tend to avoid. Hence her style of "breathy singing".
She talked about retaining a bit of saliva to achieve effects etc.
So yes, whatever be the opinion about her singing, it is definitely planned to sound that way and not an accident or limitation.
The lyrics are an important part of IU's art - she chooses the consonants and vowels to make the melody sound natural, to make a rhythm, and a mood - it's like having an extra musical instrument. And there is the meaning, poetry, and cleverness in the actual words. Following the lyrics (which is possible in English too) helps you see why she makes the choices of different vocal tones for different phrases within a song. It is all deliberate, which is why it is so consistent.
IU's voice is originally "bigger"? Fuller? But very early on she made a stylistic choice to change how she sings so she could stand out in the industry, it was the right choice for her.
Yes. Her early voice (debut days) were lower to be honest in my ears. Have to change to get attractions and it’s a positive things for her career life. And honestly I knew her after she change her singing style. Only then I realize her voice are different in debut songs
You are right, sometimes it's not about how powerful or technical the vocals. The reason why IU is so love especially in Korea is because of how she sings which touches the heart with the lyrics she wrote for all her songs and Koreans appreciated how poetic her lyrics is as someone has pointed out.
Everything IU does with her singing (and acting, for that matter) is intentional. When she breathes, when she hits a certain consonant, or holds a note. Everything is very, very specific to delivering the intended feeling to the audience. She's not trying to show off her pipes - she's telling you a story and inviting you, guiding you, along for the ride. Easily my favorite vocalist and one of the best songwriters in South Korea.
EDIT: Ironically, the song she sang as the encore is one she wrote and performed when she was 18. So it predates any of the other songs she sang during the video. Once again proving that she isn't trying to impress you... but it doesn't mean she can't. Please react to more of her songs, as some of her best songs weren't even included in this. Dear Name and Love Poem, in particular, are stupidly good.

IU's songs are easy to listen to, but there are many songs that are very difficult to sing. This is because it is very difficult to create a way of expressing the content and emotions of the lyrics and the color of the vocals.

Hi, guys... Now I recommend you see it live on stage... Tour love poem or My sea which was the last video he uploaded of his Iconic recital last year. Soloist from the beginning with no one to support her. Only she in that demanding industry... The IU Legend. Many may come who leave their groups looking to be soloists later. Honestly that Taylor Swift comparison is apt. It's not that IU has this crazy amazing voice, but because she writes and is involved in the production of her songs they fit her voice perfectly. And like Taylor she simply has staying power with hit after hit constantly and everybody else in the industry looks up to her.

IU’s My Sea live from her Golden Hour Concert is also an amazing performance. The last song she sang was actually a soundtrack for a tv series. She has a history of singing soundtracks for a number of Korean dramas and those usually does a better job at showcasing her vocal ability and range.
She is not retired from singing! But she is a little bit more careful now, since she went to a doctor and they figured out something when she said everytime she sings a higher note that forces her vocal chords, IU said her ears would start ringing, and the doctors said that her eardrums were getting irritated, and could even explode if she kept singing with no treatment!!! (I'm pretty sure this was an IU's vlog, but I do not remember if in Vlive, CZcams, or she only posted on tiktok and such, I watched a snip of it on tiktok, in a fan account of hers, and she really seemed in a lot pain, that was, I believe, a little after her album Lilac)

you mentioned about knowing and understanding yourself as an artist instead of comparing yourself to others, but that’s actually one of the things iu said to one of her fans when it comes to writing your own music: do something you like, and find people who like that :)
also about her being meticulous, one of her closest producer friend said that iu is so good at hearing every bend and sigh, and she knows why something sounds good. it’s a shame she developed a hearing problem recently and had the risk of hearing loss, but she said she’s feeling better so best wishes to her!

IU seems very experienced because she'd been in the business since she was a young teen so that's where it comes from. The K-pop industry also doesn't play when it comes to artist development. You add that, raw talent, and 10 + years in the industry, that's why she seems like she's a "retired singer". Many K-pop idols have been retired when they have worked as long as she has. Sorry for the long comment. I ❤IU!

What i absolutely adore about IU is she has such a complete mastery in her voice. Every song she sings and produce, she sings it w ease because she knows what the song need. Her technique and methods in singing is amazing, she can change techniques in a heartbeat. U may say, oh she sings breathy but no, if the song she is singing suits breathy, she will sings it that way, she will look at the lyrics, the message of the song, the instrument side n CHOOSE to deliver the message of the song to it truest form by using these methods.
Popularity in Korea is similar to bts. Although bts is better known abroad, she was the best queen in Korea even before bts appeared, and she is still number one among the musicians who want to work with her

Hi! Loved your IU reaction videos, i actually discovered your channel through them!
I've noticed both the videos you have reacted to have not had IU in a good condition (for Good Day, it was the last song she sang after a full day of recording; for Killing Voice, she had flu on the day of recording but still turned up and gave her best). I don't know if you take video suggestions outside of paid membership but if you do read my comment, i have a few recommendations for you both to check out if you would like to!
1) "Hold My Hand" - Love Poem concert live clip.
One thing about IU is that she does everything live at her concerts a.k.a live band & live backing singers, so her concert clips are the best clips to listen to her live singing! Since both of you have mentioned that you liked this song, i would love to hear your reaction to this concert version, which went viral and made this song climb back up the digital charts 10 years after its original release. Another song from the same concert you can check out is "Blueming" which you can find very easily too.
2) "Raindrop" - Palette concert live clip.
Since you both liked "Hold My Hand", i strongly recommend to check out "Raindrop" as well, because it has a similar voice change happening in the song which i find really satisfying to hear as a listener, and would really love to hear both of your thoughts on the song.
3) "Through The Night" + "Dear Name" - Melon Music Awards live clip.
This performance is probably one of her undisputed best performances ever. Some people may not grasp the meaning behind the performance even after watching through it but i can give some hints here ("Through The Night" is literally translated as "Night Letter" from korean; the title "Dear Name" means "Dear ")

"You & I" was her next hit song right after she blew up with "Good Day" back in 2010. Highly recommend to check out the concert versions, especially for "Good Day" as it feels livelier compared to the one you have reacted to where she was fatigued after a whole day of singing and recording.
5) "Love Poem" - studio live clip
The one on her official channel is great, but it could feel heavier than usual due to her emotions being heavier in it. Of course, any other concert/live versions are great to check out as well!
6) "My Sea" - Golden Hour concert live clip
I would recommend listening to the official audio before watching this clip, if only to feel how much she was giving into the performance, in this milestone concert of hers, while suffering from issues with her hearing (Patulous Eustachian Tube Dysfunction)
*p.s.: The Golden Hour concert was held at the Seoul Olympic Stadium, the largest concert venue in SK, and she was the 1st female Korean act -inclusive of groups and soloists- to hold a their own concert at the venue, 88k seats snapped up in minutes with 400k people still queuing online.
There's a lot more live clips uploaded to her official channel that you can check out, and at the same time, you can also listen to her official title tracks released across her 15-year career thus far. She has dipped into so many genres over the course of her career such that people say that there will always be an IU song for someone or some mood.

And also I love her "hissing", she is literally known for that. I think it's absolutely beautiful and what made me fall in love with her. And obviously it did her no harm because she is singing like that since 2008. We all know what she is capable of and how developed her voice is in all the areas. She could easily leave out the "hissing" but that just wouldn't be her. No hissing = no IU.

I remember reading an interview of someone from the korean entertainment industry. He was asked why does he think iu is so loved by the korean general public? And he said it's because iu is like your ex-girlfriend singing to you.
Many Koreans love her delicate lyrics and expressions, and it’s sad that it is not expressed 100% in foreign languages.

I really love IU and her music, so when my sibling said IU's voice didn't stand out to her, at first I was flabbergasted, but I think after watching yalls video, I get what she was saying. I think what makes IU stand out to me is how she changes her voice tone to emote- the emotionality in her songs are so strong, fluid, heartwarming, and can be so sorrowful. Her songs bring out emotion, and her voice conjures that emotion from herself to all of us. (esp in her concerts!)

It's not even her vocal talents that makes IU a legend, it's her witty lyrical genius writing that's on par with Eminem. Literally the entire KHipHop genre/industry gave her the nickname "Top1 in Khiphop", cause she writes poetic bars and just other intricate details and tricks in writing,, she's like Korean Shakespeare the way she plays with words, you just gotta go dive deep on her arts to appreciate her as the #1 kpop soloist in history.
