      Hi Amy, responding here as you suggested - I raised a point earlier that this was a great video and all, but kind of a lesser/middle tier track from the band. To reform as a question - what drove the selection of this song, and/or why not start with the real standout tracks from an artist and work your way into the deep cuts and obscurities later? :)

  • @danh945
    @danh945 Před 8 měsíci +21

    Mellon Collie is a concept album that tells the story of a rockstar, called Zero, that is themed at least partly on Billy Corgan's life. The first disc of this double album starts with Zero successful and disillusioned. The album can be thought of akin to a 90's disney film or a 70's musical film, with each song setting an important divergence in the story. Mellon Collie, a piano score, is the introduction to the theme of the album. The next song, the hit single Tonight Tonight sets the scene (Chicago, where the band formed), and the next song, the powerful rock anthem Jellybelly, establishes the characters - the band.
    The next song is Zero, the song of the main character. It's important to note that the character is leading a double life with his public rock persona (called Glass) and his inner true self (Zero) reflections of each other. One of the key lines to that song is "I'm your lover, I'm your Zero, I'm the face in your dreams of Glass". This shows how he is in an unhappy relationship, where the person is in love with what he is rather than who (also a reflection of Billy's first marriage). This song is important to listen to because there are many themes and perhaps even motifs about the Zero character that are present in other songs, including Porcelina. You want to know why that intro is the way it is with the heavier power chords? That's Zero.
    The next song, Here Is No Why, is basically the Disney "I want" song - he wants love. Next up some angry songs and then we get into the love section, which is hard to miss given the songs are called things like Love and Cupid (de Locke). This song comes at the tale end of that section where his love is perhaps at its strongest, but also clear that it is not the healthiest of relationships. We then move into the second album that goes angry, wistful, angry, and then a little bit weird.
    It may not be your style overall, but I would recommend giving the double album a full listen and trying to note down the story themes that emerge. It is also, for my money, the single most varied album of the rock genre. You have songs which are genuinely disturbing, leading to ballads, leading to rock anthems, leading to songs that I used to play to get my baby to fall asleep. Add to that Billy moving into orchestral support for the songs and you have a true masterpiece.

      @werideatdusk Před 4 měsíci +5

      This is mostly historical revisionism on WPC's part. In the 90s there were few efforts to portray this as a literal narrative story album, even after Machina came out (which was a literal narrative story album). Mellon Collie is a fantastic album and a true listening experience, but Corgans intention at the time was clearly to showcase the wide ambitions of the band on a musical level, and any story elements were incidental. Trying to read a literal beginning/middle/ending story into the MCIS track list is grasping at straws.

    Fantastic analysis. Great catch on the eighth note rhythmic motif at the beginning. To more understand the context of this I would recommend the album as a whole (“Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness”) as it is truly a concept album meant to be heard together. Also the artwork and videos for the singles give a lot of context to the mood - think Alice in Wonderland, early 20th century childrens books and silent films. As far as the quick juxtapositions I will note that one of the B-sides for another somg was called “Pastichio Medley”, which was a 20 minute medley of 100+ short clips of extremely varied bits of music seemingly cut together randomly. So clearly the concept of “pastiche” was being thought of at this time. In general this band is great at juxtapositions of many paradoxical emotional states, which ends up often as a bittersweet and enlightened melancholy arrived at through a rich and rewarding journey.

    I really enjoyed your reaction to this! It's a song with a lot of great texture even if ultimately the structure is pretty conventional. I always felt like the quiet setup has the listener drifting out to sea, until a huge wave crashes into us with the loud intro. As the wave washes past, we return somewhat to the mood of the intro, but now fuzzier and choppier, and the waves periodically crash again going into each chorus.
    The loud/soft contrast was a hallmark of 90s "alternative" rock, with the Pixies being a hugely influential band in this regard. Pixies "Tame" is probably their most extreme example of it, but other songs such as Gigantic (sung by bassist Kim Deal instead of regular singer Black Francis a.k.a. Frank Black) demonstrate it to varying degrees. Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (a 90s classic) was described by singer Kurt Cobain as a "Pixies rip-off".
    For a more dreamy Smashing Pumpkins sound, "Disarm", "Mayonaise" or "Tonight, Tonight" (ideally preceded by the instrumental "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness", as it is on the album) are great. For more of their harsher sound, I'd go with "Zero" or (more poppy but still lots of distortiion) the big hit "Today"

    I think you did answer your question. Corgan has a very expressive voice, and a very distinct style. This is quite an atmospheric song even just in the lyrics, and given the way he intends to express it, the music compliments his voice very well. That intro, etc., prepares you to hear that voice and style. His voice is naturally harsh, and the music had to be both soft and harsh to establish the juxtaposition of his harshness with the atmospherics.
    Or maybe it only seems inevitable because I've know the song so well for almost 30 years.

    Great analysis!🙂 Billy (Corgan) has a beautifully expressive voice. It either resonates with you or it doesn't (Many hear nothing besides a nasal whine). You intuitively grasped the core of the Pumpkins' dynamics: easily switching from soft to hard, silent to loud, melodic to metal. Not surprisingly, Billy is a master at writing both beautiful ballads and heavy metal head bangers (sometimes both will crop up in the same song like here in Porcelina). Really enjoyed this. Hope you do more Pumpkins!❤ (Just subscribed)

    A deep cut, but one that displays a lot of hallmarks The Smashing Pumpkins are known for. It's also a song that's meant a lot to me at various points in my life. I'd say this is a song that is best experienced with headphones and at night, either in a darkened room or staring up at the evening sky. I think you kind of have to be in the right mood for it. But SP are a really great band with a lot to love. For an easier entry point, I'd suggest more radio-friendly songs like "Tonight, Tonight" "Today" "Disarm" or "1979".

    The song is a masterpiece. hands down. The unique combination of elements in the track create something truly epic.. One thing i get from this vid apart from the excellent technical analysis is the importance of emotional sonic context - without being familiar with the album as a whole i think a new listener taking one track (a long non single track) as a snapshot may miss a contextual emotional depth.

    As a longtime fanatic of the Smashing Pumpkins, I’m so intrigued that this was your first foray into their music. It’s very exciting to see of course! Although I would echo what others have commented here that this is a deep cut & perhaps not the easiest or most accessible way most people would first experience them. But this song does demonstrate a lot of their strengths. They are generally lumped in with other great 90s alternative/grunge bands. But having listened to most of their prolific catalogue, I believe they really are their own unique & beautiful beast that can be appreciated from many angles.
    Thank you for your always interesting insights & analysis. I greatly enjoy your channel & I’m so happy you’ve entered the smashing pumpkins realm. I wish you had the score on the screen throughout the entirety of the song. My friends either love SP, or hate SP, so it's fun to watch and listen as someone hears them for the first time. I always felt this song was mimicking the surf at the beach as it comes in; sometimes soft and spread thin and sometimes crashing, but always on a predictable rhythm. The hard to the soft moments always seem to me the rumble of the wave hitting the beach and then spreading out all the way up to the sand castle, then pulling back and disappearing for a bit.
    This song I think was misguiding for introducing the band. Something like '1979' would be a more faithful introduction to such a diverse sounding band. However, if you want continue with quirky, "We only Come out at Night" is a great composition.

    Glad you commented on the drumming. I was going to suggest some Smashing pumpkins when you were learning about the drums. Jimmy Chamberlin is one of the finest there is. The "saw dusty sound" you are hearing is the distortion. But distortion through a Big muff pedal, rather than turning up the volume to create distortion.

  • @cactustactics
    @cactustactics Před 11 měsíci +1

    This was a really nice analysis! I really like how you focus on the percussion and the role it's playing, especially in the more atmospheric parts. The way the cymbal taps are used to highlight the upper note in the arpeggios the guitar is playing is one of my fav bits
    As far as the structure goes, honestly I'd personally call the opening section the intro, I'm not sure if there's a particular reason the score names things that way. A big part of music from that broad genre in the 90s is the use of loud/quiet dynamics, often quiet verses and loud choruses. And it wasn't uncommon to lead into a song with the chorus riff (no vocals) before hitting the first verse, kind of a prelude to what was coming. I guess in that sense it's an intro, but you wouldn't normally have such a long opening section before it
    As well as something for the crescendo to build to, I feel like that first loud B-section (I guess) works as a bridge between the soft opening section and the soft verse section - their dynamics are very similar but the tone changes quite a lot. I feel like they're two different parts maybe? So I feel like that's the reason the chorus riff is added there, more than it just being a typical thing to do

    To answer your question. The intro somewhat ties this song into the album. This song appears on the album Melancholie and the Infinite Sadness, which was a double album, and both discs(or albums) are themed respective of each other. Album A titled " Dawn to Dusk" started very introspective/introverted, and progressed to be much more extroverted. This song is near the end of that album, and the intro to this song was (in my interpretation) the last bit of internalizing, before committing fully to being more outwardly focused.
