  • Darjeeling tea is one of these teas of the world which are truly rare and unique, and that makes it exceptionally special. This exceptional tea is picked only once a year on a special full moon night for a few minutes and is extremely rare to find. In today's video, I'll take you behind the scene on how this tea is made and how you can also try it (it's not easy to find this tea). Through this video I'll also share more about what makes Darjeeling tea so special and also about a very special organisation which is paving the path for sustainable and ethical tea and coffee - Grace Farms (gracefarms.org).
I hope this film is both entertaining to watch and also helps to add some knowledge about the iconic Darjeeling Tea.

    History of Darjeeling Tea
The story of Darjeeling tea begins in the mid-19th century when the British East India Company established tea plantations in the region. The cool climate, high altitude, and fertile soil of the Darjeeling hills were found to be perfect for cultivating tea.
By the late 19th century, Darjeeling tea came to be known as one of the finest teas in the world. It became a popular choice among the British aristocracy and was in high demand in European markets, and the market for Darjeeling tea soared.
In 1983, Darjeeling tea received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognizing it as a product unique to the region. This protected status ensures that only tea produced in the designated area can bear the Darjeeling name, safeguarding its authenticity and preventing misuse.
Today, Darjeeling tea remains the epitome of luxury and refinement. The tea estates meticulously hand-pluck the delicate leaves, which are then expertly processed to preserve their inherent qualities. The tea is known for its light golden hue, floral and muscatel notes, and a gentle astringency that sets it apart from other varieties.
The allure of Darjeeling tea continues to captivate tea enthusiasts worldwide. Its demand has grown exponentially, leading to increased cultivation and production. However, the limited land available for tea gardens and the strict quality control measures in place ensure that Darjeeling tea remains a rare and coveted indulgence.

That was an interesting story of the full moon tea 😄
It's great that organic tea cultivation is gaining ground in Darjeeling. Tata Tea in Assam is producing green tea.
Well Assam is the largest producer of tea with around 800 tea estates

Oh yes! The scale of tea in Assam is mind blowing and most tea we consume in India comes from there. Darjeeling tea is quite different and I think both are pride of India :)
