Has Nic Martin been wasted on the Half Back Flank?

- It seems that every time Nic Martin goes forward he kicks goals. Despite racking up career best numbers, is he being wasted on the half back flank or would he be better suited up forward?

Nick is an absolute GUN...!! Wasted down back and should immediately be placed back on the wing. Knows how to find the ball. I was at the pre season practice match. At ground level things are more difficult to see. Easy up high in the stands plus hind sight. He was clearly BOG that day too. 10/10

I think Nic takes very high risk kicks. When they don't pay off from the HF or wing, it's dissappointing but managable if we're set up correctly behind the ball. But when they don't work coming out of our D50, they are almost a certain goal for the opposition. Nick Daicos on halfback wasn't doing anything incredible, he was just simply chip kicking his way through the opposition and flying past for the handball recieved and getting the pies up the wing at the minimum. I think Martin's mind is incredibly attacking and we should let that shine across the wing or forward half.
8/10 because those turnovers from HB are costly. 10/10 if he were wing/hf. For now, 8.

Maybe as a defender he could defend a bit more. If he doesn't want to tackle, fair enough. He needs to harass a bit more though. Make the attacker go around him and slow transition or put some pressure on the kick. He doesn't kick floaters, maybe who he is trying to kick it to are too stagnant. Players shouldn't be standing still, they should at least be walking. Really they should be getting their rest from jogging, so they should be jogging. The movement should be into space, then the kicker can kick the ball out into that space and make the attacker run onto it. You don't want to put it onto the head of someone standing still. Obviously his kicking does need to improve, an outside player should kick with more efficiency, it should as his technique isn't poor. 7.5

Catching up on your podcasts after returning from Bali. Agree with both your comments about Nic Martin. I think he is being wasted as a half back flanker. Wing or half forward flank would be more suited. Effort 7, Efficiency 6.5, Consistency 7, Wow factor 6.5 = Edge Facor 6.75

He is a gun, no doubt. A wonderful pick up, great clubman, hard at it, a great accumulator of the ball. He’d be a 9.0 all day, but half of his kicks are tragically, shambolicly (sp?) bad. Is he getting an injection in his kicking foot before every game? Because of his grubbers, he’s slipped to an 8.5.

Yes he has. I think Gresham has been wasted up the ground and in the middle too. He could kick 50 crumbing the ridiculous number of long pack marks that happen in the bombers forward line.

9. He has more passion than anyone else and gets so hyped.
He is such a good player, if we play him back we'll miss him forward and if playing forward we'll miss him in the back half. A permanent mid-field role may be the answer. I'd like to see him in the starting four as he knows how to get hands on the ball.

Nick is at least an 8.
And we do have a problem on the wing ATM. With XD out. Nick played brilliantly there last year with Seymour Sam on the other side. Jake Kelly should only be a back man. That's what he does well. So put Nick back on the wing. He can run all day and the effect will be immediate.
We have some other options for half back flank.. we need Nick to do the outside mid work.

That seems to be an issue with a few of the boys, playing in positions that don't have as much value to the team. Trust the process, Brad is building diversity within the list. Martin is developing beautifully. While I agree with you legends that he is more valuable on a wing or half forward flank, the scope of his skill set is that he will play multiple positions based on the matchups on game day.

I get the criticism……but c’mon! This kid has come from the clouds, one of the first picked, is flexible, highly skilled, gets leather poisoning most weeks and is in line for AA selection.

I'd give Martin an 8 based only on the basic stats. My question is if he gets 30 disposals and only 20 of them are effective and his direct opponent has 15 disposals and kicks 3 goals and has 5 goal assists is he really that damaging across half back given his tackle numbers are not sky high? Earlier this year I said he should play a role forward of centre. This is a guy who on debut had 27 possessions and kicked 5 goals against a quality Geelong team nuff said I reckon.

I think the Nic Martin to half back experiment is not his best position, yes he is accumulating stats at a high rate but the impact of them is underwhelming not to mention the reduced impact I think of mason redman goes unmentioned in the discussion.
I think play Nic Martin on a wing and Jake Kelly goes back and everyone is in their natural position again.
The Redman trade off is a very interesting point
West coast bypassed him so we snaffled out of the wafl in the summer after a trial training period. You are correct in saying wanganeen was also signed up. Ronald Frejo was the other player to trial as was Dylan Clarke. I think Martin going back has been good for his development as he was a one way runner and couldn’t defend/tackle. We need 2 x Nic Martin let’s be honest!

Martin was in All-Australian form last season until he was moved to half back. He's looked like a shell of himself since moving to half back, and its no coincidence we start looking more dangerous when he's moved to the wing/forward role. Look what happened on Anzac Day and against Carlton, Scott is ruining this kid, and I fear for the club's direction.

Its usually pretty close between the draftees, and different clubs need different kinds of players, so there is no "best player at the time". Dodoro made the choice to choose so many duds that its almost impressive....almost.
