History of Power Rangers is a series where Linkara looks at every season of the show and offers critical analysis!
The History of Power Rangers shifts into turbo, subsequently also shifting into mediocrity. New cast, new rangers, same idiotic villain.

I just noticed that Adam looked on the verge of tears when taking about Carlos replacing him. Johnny finding out that Saban found the veterans expendable must’ve really hurt him. He and Nakia Burrise both found out through gossip via the make-up and wardrobe department. Something similar happened when Aisha got written out.

That always pisses me off as well. Johnny Yong Bosch had been right there since Season 2, and he had become one of the elder statesman anchors of the Power Ranger group. Only Jason David Frank had been on the show longer than Bosch. Another in a long line of damning things to happen on such a great show.

Turbo had production troubles in its first half. Producer Jonathan Tzachor wanted to embrace the source footage Gekisou Sentai Carranger's slapstick comedy and then story editor Doug Sloan wanted to continue Power Rangers Zeo's more serious bent of the franchise growing up. This led to severe Mood Whiplash, like a villain planting bombs that Rangers needed to deactivate before they blew up and kill people while having goofy concepts like Tommy reading the new Megazords' instruction manual. Eventually Doug Sloan left and was replaced with Judd Lynn right when it came time to jettison the old cast (save the new Kid-Appeal Character they just brought in) and replace them with a new cast. Then the crew didn't even have the decency to tell the actors they were all about to lose their jobs, until some of them overheard the makeup team gossiping about it. As Judd Lynn was in agreement on playing closer to Carranger's comedy, the product became a lot more cohesive in the show's second half.

The transition to a vehicle based theme actually works when you consider the previous themes established. Mighty Morphin season 1 had an ancient dinosaur theme, season 2 had an ancient mythological theme, season 3 introduced ninja powers while the zords were themed after modern animals, Zeo introduced a more technological/religious/civilization theme, and Turbo introduced a modern vehicle based team with cars and rescue based vehicles as Zords. There was a natural progression of themes throughout time that would even be continued with Space Exploration. While Turbo may not have been executed to the standard the fans would have hoped, the theme progression did make sense.

Head-cannon: Billy DID make the Turbo powers. He realized that with all the threats that the Rangers faced they couldn't fight all of them, even with the power of the Zeo Crystal, and perhaps was planning on expanding the team in a way. Unfortunately, he was unable to finish them completely when he accelerated (ha, unintended pun) in age. Alpha probably kept working on them in the background. To get to the Island of Mystery Zordon realized he would need to use an immense source of power to break through the island's magical barriers. Zordom used the Zeo Crystal to do this. which either destroyed the crystal outright or rendered it near useless, hence why Kat couldn't morph. Because the Rangers still needed powers to fight Divatox he presented them with the Turbo Powers, describing them as a necessary upgrade to down play the sacrifice that he had to make.

So my idea for Turbo is that Zed and Rita resume their attempts at conquering Earth, but Divatox comes along and decides that she also wants to conquer Earth so she can sell of its resources on the intergalactic black market. Because there are two different villain factions terrorizing Earth, the rangers decide that they need a second team of Rangers to help out. They decide to recruit TJ, Cassie, Carlos, Ashley, and Justin in the same way that Zordon had chosen the original five. The Zeo Rangers would work alongside the Turbo rangers and act as mentors, kind of giving them on the job training. Zed and Rita would then team up with Divatox to destroy the Command Chamber. The Zeo Rangers are kidnapped along with Zordon and Alpha. The Turbo Rangers are on their own with no allies and no mentors. This is like their final exam. They go into space and thus the events of In Space take place.

For those woundering what happened to Rocky:
DG: There are conflicting reports surrounding your departure from the series. For a long time, it was stated that you had injured yourself, and Rocky’s injury was written in to mirror that. Recently, however, you’ve said that you left, at least in part, due to disagreements behind the scenes. Right here, right now, without naming any names, what’s the full story?
SC: There was no injury. That was the way they came up with to write me out. It came down to it was a non-union show, and though it was wildly popular, they didn’t have to adhere to union rules about residuals and salaries. After I’d been there for a couple years and I felt I’d proven myself, I thought I’d get Favored Nations, but some people were getting paid more than others. At that point, I knew that they had the means to pay us all what we were worth, but they didn’t.
I wasn’t thinking along the lines I should have, that I should have stayed on another season for the fans, but I’d put a lot of time and energy into the show, and they weren’t willing compensate me. They really didn’t see my value at all or appreciate what I brought to the show. It really just came down to being treated fairly.

I can't personally verify the sources, but on IMDb's trivia section for the Turbo movie, it explains that Lerigot's magic was the source of the Turbo powers. It also explained that the Zeo powers were irreparably damaged by an encounter with one of Divatox's minions, and that the movie's finished runtime was over three hours- and among scenes and subplots axed for the final cut was a mostly naked space mermaid that was an ally of Zordon's who would help the ranger. The trivia blurb goes on to state that she/it was the one who helped Kimberly and Jason escape Divatox's bilge- and that you can spot the slight continuity error from her scenes being cut when they all wash up on the beach.

ToQger was skipped due to the feeling Trains aren't marketable or profitable which some can declare bull since some kids still play with trains as toys like this one two year old boy at my local mall or considering Lightspeed Rescue had rescue trains that became their megazord, IIRC.
Personally, I think skipping Sentai seasons is stupid but it's sadly a necessary evil due in part to BoA's hunger for competing with Super Hero toys from Marvel (& DC to some degree) and Nickelodeon's stupid 20 episode a year clause which could and should easily be fixed with either airing the show twice a week or take a page from Disney and trim the episode count to 32 so future seasons can start either in the fall or January simultaneously

Y’know, with the way Tzachor ran the Neo-Saban era, I have to wonder if the stuff in Turbo (no explanations for the powers switch or why Bulk and Skull aren’t in France, the sudden removal of Zordon and Alpha with no buildup) was the dry run for his later tenure on the Neo-Saban era. I mean I know not EVERY negative thing was his fault but seriously with how he ran things then (and presumably in Turbo) THIS GUY wrote the Changing of the Zords 3-parter AND Countdown to Destruction. Dude’s apparently got more ups and downs than a roller coaster.
Also it seems to set the precedent of Judd Lynn coming in and salvaging as best he can. I mean it says something about Judd when even if his finishing up of RPM wasn’t what Eddie Guzelian would’ve done, still kept the tone and themes and he at least wrapped things up in a satisfying way.
Again I know it’s not ALL Judd just like it’s not ALL Tzachor but in terms of Power Rangers showrunners, he’s probably the one I like the most

Oh no Judd lynn will be the first to tell you johnathon Tzachor was a major pain in the ass during these days too. The difference is that he alot more actually smart people around him to keep him in check. Tv tropes says Judd Lynn was in agreement with Tzachor on how to proceed with the series but I don’t think that’s accurate. I noticed on a rewatch that Judd Lynn wasn’t too high up on the food chain in the early days of power rangers. So I think it was more of a case of him just picking his battles so he can salvage the mess that Tzachor had created since the guy had no trouble firing two long term producers of the show being Doug saloan and Ann Austin just for not agreeing with him.

I think “cars attacks” highlights what the first half of the series could’ve been. The whole group actually hanging out together, a fairly mature side plot with stone and his niece, the civilian plots smoothly blended into the villain plan, good character development with a Ranger (kat) trying to start the next phase of her life and worrying about her Ranger duties, and some damn good fight scenes between the rangers and divatox’s forces. Probably not a coincidence there is very little Carranger footage. I actually thought the story got better starting there rather than after the cast change. The episodes before it all felt ridiculously low stakes, with ineffective use of the supporting cast, the civilian plots mostly meandering for the veterans, and the footage splicing on par with masked riders

1:44 - I think that's where I think Samurai and Megaforce failed while Dino Charge and Ninja Steel actually have something to them. The former felt like it was forcing itself to be more childish and "for kids." The latter is still "for kids" but feels like they're still trying to make a good story out of it and not trying too hard. Let's not forget that RPM wasn't exactly all "dark and edgy."
Of course, not everyone's going to like the same thing and while I get a kick out of Ninja Steel's silliness, I get why it doesn't work for others. Nonetheless, I think the new Lynn seasons has a lot more going for it compared to the Neo-Saban era's weak opening acts.

21:06 Elgar's appearance changes depending on which footage is used. US footage shows Elgar as a little goofy looking, while Sentai footage shows a more evil face. This parallels the difference between Zelmonda and Elgar's personalities; Elgar's running gag of ruining his aunt Divatox's plans makes him look comically idiotic, while Zelmonda's ruthlessness was emphasized.

11:02 To be fair, the Sentai version of the second season of Mighty Morphin used a kid for the white ranger. And he was much worse in terms of character because he used his position of the white ranger for personal gain. Something that Zordon always discouraged. Justin on the other hand, never did anything like that. He was just underutilized.

My big issue with the Passing The Torch episodes is just how rushed it is. Apparently it's common knowledge amongst the Rangers that their time is almost up - none of them question what's going on or have any objections (although check out Adam's face when he's passing his power on...JYB ain't happy!!)
    It's like:
"Here's a magical timer, it's your last mission and you're going no matter what"
    "Yeah ok"
There's no mention of it beforehand and in the episode afterwards, all the newbies are already best friends and seem experienced with morphing & the Ranger powers!

obviously birds. They are in no way as drastic a change as cars. It's
still a change, since Jetman is much more earth and science based, but
it would have avoided the insanity of Carranger at least. The comment

+Gadzinisko We'll never know what was in the contracts. Heck for years people were saying they weren't allowed to skip series and that went out the window. However from a practicality standpoint there are reasons to stay current. Obviously, the Japanese costumes, props and models would still be available in good condition. They wouldn't have to remake anything. Also, there's toy production. The molds and processes would still be in place and you could just repackage existing stock that didn't sell. Recreating the merchandise from a 6 year old Sentai series would have cost more than just using the more recent equipment.
Another thing from a business standpoint is the "Zord creep". By the time of Turbo, a full second set of Zord toys to sell had become standard.

Turbo only had adapted one sentai that while doesn't have the right tone for the series it could have still worked if handle better since RPM was adapted from another parody sentai but was still edited well enough to be considered one of the darkest and best series of the show. Megaforce on the other hand was edited together by 2 completely different sentai's together the former not being considered all the great to begin with and wasting time of the anniversary by sentai only teams and completely rushing things by making a 50 episode show to 20, making an incoherent mess.

You are far from the only person to do this, but it kind of bugs me when people say "Megaforce=Gokaiger". I don't find that fair not just because it's technically inaccurate (Megaforce was GOSEIGER, it was SUPER Megaforce that was Gokaiger), but because it lumps the first season in with the second. A little while back I ranked the seasons, and actually decided to separate Megaforce and Super Megaforce for ranking. Why? Because taken on its own, Megaforce (Goseiger) is pretty DECENT. Not my favorite season, the pacing isn't great, characterization is bad, etc. But it made good use of the Sentai footage even while rushing and had its own interesting story. Super Megaforce's misuse of the Gokaiger footage was so criminal that I just can't stand people lumping the two seasons together. Super Megaforce must stand on its OWN as the failure it is, while Caffeine-Free Vanilla Megaforce can stand with Lost Galaxy and Lightspeed Rescue as kind of dry boring seasons that definitely weren't THAT bad.

Re-watching this, there are some ways they could have justified the shift in powers in-universe.
The first would be to make Divatox's monsters faster and more agile, requiring the Rangers sacrifice strength for speed. That would also harken back to the Ninja powers vs the Dino powers.
The second is to have the Zeo powers grow too strong for the Ranger's bodies. Pull a *My Hero Academia* and have Rocky break his arm throwing a punch while morphed.
Finally, make it a question of balance in the fight between good and evil. The Rangers getting stronger invites stronger threats, so they switch to weaker powers to prevent Angel Grove/Earth from being too damaged in the crossfire.

I have some confirmation from Otakon 2012 when Jason David Frank was a guest of honor there. You may be able to find some of his panels from there if you look around on CZcams (Also, FYI, I was a Putty there and brought up the highlight of one panel during questioning, I also met you as that same Putty during an autograph session at Youmacon 2011 and we had a delightful and hilarious conversation).
Frank said it was due to him that the cast was replaced and he also stated to everyone at the panel that the production team told him that if he left, they would also replace all the other rangers which I am guessing was an attempt at incentive to also convince him to stay, but as they did follow suit, hard to say. Frank still wanted to leave, and as you said, did agree to stay on for at most 20 more episodes until replacements could be found. If you can find those Otakon panels I mentioned, hopefully you can see the confirmation yourself. I do know at least one of them (The one I was a Putty at) has been uploaded to CZcams.
I host an online talk show where I interview people from various projects and if I can ever interview the actors from Zeo to Turbo (sans Steve Cardanas as he wouldn't know, but I would love to interview him regardless as well), I may ask about this. But so far, I don't believe Catherine Sutherland had any intention to leave the show at that time, so it is indeed just a rumor.

My theory is that Zordon used the zeo crystals to restore the original Dino power coins. The original coins were damaged but still working. The zeo crystals energy was drained off to restore some of the original power. The only coins that couldn't be restore were the white and black power coins because there was no zeo crystal of those colors.
Hence why in forever red Jason has his old Tyrannosaurs morpher working. The process to restore the power coins probably drained most of the zeo energy, now naturally the zeo crystals would restore themselves but that could take time. That why they switched to their "back-up" powers.
As for why the zords are cars, Zordon suggested making the powers car-themed so that earth can create it own power rangers.
Since Justin still had his powers after "True blue to the rescue", my theory is that Justin became a solo hero. During this time he let his farther who works for the government scan his morpher. People begin to reverse-engineer his morpher, and due it being connected directly into Storm Blaster (a car) it was easy for them to make the new powers tied into vehicles like the Turbo Powers.
Thus we get what I like to call "military' power Rangers, I.e. Light speed rescue, S.P.D, and Time Force .

    1. The Zeo powers were weakened/damaged and unable to be used for the Turbo movie, hence why new powers had to be used.

Obviously, this wouldn't have happened given what we know now and what happened with David Yost but I think that would've been better than, "hey, you got new powers now. They're cool. Forget the other ones."
Here's the scenario I have if Billy stayed (no aging or whatever): Billy left the Rangers at some point getting a job at NASA. He's an engineer and works on the ships and such, with him are his crewmembers and assistants (the aforementioned team), the Zeo Rangers are attacked and taken hostage, Billy then brings out the Turbo powers and recruits the others. Billy takes the Blue Ranger powers because that's how he is, he gives the Red Ranger powers to TJ because he's seen him act as a leader with the team (and add in some back story about him being a pilot or something).
Basically have Billy be the creator of the Turbo powers. Again, given what happened in real life it probably never would've happen but I think this would've been better than the official transition we had.

I always thought the Turbo power source was specifically needed to get to the island, and they just connected new suits and zords to it

Justin Stewart is my favorite Ranger in Turbo, I didn't think he was annoying like people say. Him being the replacement for Rocky actually solidified how much Rocky sucked as a Ranger for me at least. Justin was cute and much more helpful to the Rangers than Rocky, being kinda the Billy of the team with his many gadgets and gizmos that he can make. So Linkara, I liked Justin and I still like him now

I agree 100% I absolutely love Zeo was the season that basically made MMPR even better. Rocky was never good as a leader Red Ranger but he was amazing as a Blue Ranger and his character evolved much more by Zeo which I grew a great like for him by then, Tommy becoming Red Ranger made perfect sense because he fit that role best. And finally bringing Jason back was well "Gold". Jason was always a great leader and for him and Tommy to lead the Zeo team was amazing. The Machine Empire was a great add of new enemies not only of the Rangers but of Zedd and Rita as well! Because by season 3 Zedd and Rita yes we're the villains but basically became likable too! I also loved the new Command Center aka Power Chamber and the Zeozords which are upgrades to the Ninjazords which were also awesome! Turbo got better when TJ and the newer cast joined second part in the season but yeah only thing I enjoyed about Turbo was the Zords and Divatoxs big boobs. Thankfully Power Rangers In Space was a huge improvement and went back to the original roots and had a bit of Star Wars feel to it as well.

Supposedly they actually did say in the movie why the Zeo powers were lost. In a deleted but filmed scene the powers were actually destroyed by Water, not kidding.

I’d already been starting to drift out of Power Rangers fandom during Zeo. Then the poster for the Turbo movie came out, and showcased a kid in the Blue Ranger costume. And even though I was only a couple of years older than said kid, that was when I thought “Yeah, I’m done with this.”
