  • I have been asked more than once how to make homemade pen flush rather than purchasing it from an online retailer for $11 per pint. Well, here is the top secret recipe.

    I had been curious about what you used. Thanks for that. I could never bring myself to pay the prices for those small bottles of pen flush I've seen at all the pen retailers, so I've been using water and a smaller ultrasonic cleaner, but there have been some inks we all know and love that require more.

      Yeah, I got tired of paying that much money after my first purchase and just after my second purchase determined that I would find an alternative, so I did some digging and found what others were doing. What I use works great and without any problems.

    Well done. Love the simple practical economical approach. I use 409 at a higher concentration about 2%. It is a pure detergent. Also I am careful with ammonia, some materials react to it. Always flush with water immediately after using the solution.

      Agreed. As soon as I am done with the pen flush, I always flush well with water.

    Excellent video it’s so nice to have alternatives for those of us who have multiple pens, don’t clean as often as we should or use inks that are a bit hard to clean out .
    Thank you

      Since I buy vintage and used pens that have been sitting around for eons and possibly never cleaned, I use a lot of pen flush. At least this way I don't need to worry about the cost of the fluid used.

    Cool -- thank you!!! I'm too cheap to buy the pen flush. I had watched another video on making it but yours shows me I CAN do this. I don't have much of a need for it except for certain inks that have been resistant to normal cleaning! Thank you so much!!!!!

      You are very welcome. It is easy to make and a lot cheaper than what you can buy from pen companies.

    good idea to go gallon..i was making in pint batches, but used sparingly. with a gallons worth, i'd go nutso with the stuff!

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah, I couldn't bear the tedium of doing small batches as often as I get vintage and used pens that need a good bathing.

      You are welcome. That was the idea, to help others save on this. I had purchased a few small bottles of pen flush in the past and was annoyed at the price of such a small amount of flush. I was using a lot of it and I did some research, watched a few other videos, and did some reading on it. I have been making my own for a while now (gone through a few gallons) and it works great. I don't have to skimp on it since it is cheap to make. I am glad this helped.

    Thanx Troy, Chris Saenz recommended your pen flush recipe to me as I am a noobie. Thanx for the easy explanation!

      Once I found out all that was in pen flush, I was disappointed that I had spent so much on purchasing it. With having flush by the gallon, not only do I same a bunch of money, but I am not so apt to be stingy in using it.

    Clear ammonia is impossible to buy over the counter in Australia - something to do with terrorism countermeasures or something? - but I've found that cloudy ammonia works OK. The "cloudiness" comes from mixing in a bit of detergent, so I just leave that step out... Thanks for posting this - I haven't tried using pen flush in my ultrasonic, but it sounds like a smart idea!

    • @markhutton9372
      @markhutton9372 Před 2 lety

      I thought that too but was told by someone more expert that cloudy ammonia is not fit for purpose due to different chemical makeup

    I use only dyed inks so a little soap in in a jug of water works just fine.

    • @fountainpenfanatic
      @fountainpenfanatic  Před 6 lety +3

      For me, I tend to pick up vintage and used pens, so I never know what may have been in them or for how long. I use pen flush and the ultrasonic cleaner a lot as a result. I rarely have to use pen flush on my own, newer pens. Usually simple tap water will flush out most anything that I put into a pen. It is the unknown crud from years of neglect that makes me use pen flush by the gallon.

    very useful thankyou, but for safety reasons remove old drink labelling if storing.
