  • Welcome back to James Bond Revisited, as we look back at all the 007 flicks, counting down to the (eventual) theatrical release of NO TIME TO DIE. In 1967, Sean Connery's contract as James Bond had reached its end, and he seemingly had no interest in returning to the role. Thus, the hunt for on for a new actor to take his place - with the producers eventually settling on an Australian model named George Lazenby. The resulting film, ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, would become one of the more obscure Bond films, but also one of the best and most influential, counting directors like Christopher Nolan and Quentin Tarantino as fans. So join us as we look back at what just might be the greatest James Bond film of them all!

George Lazenby was handsome, tall and had an exceptional body. He started out and made a great movie, then there was a great Diana Rggs. great Gabriele Ferzetti great Telly Savalas. Then the one-of-a-kind ending in the Bond genre. A very underrated super movie

Always thought he did a great job and his film stands out for me as one of the best after sean connery, with Timothy Dalton a close third. For me it's not about the acting so much as nailing the tone, which is the tricky thing with bond films. It involves a lot of nostalgia and walking the line between cool and absurd.

George Lazenby pays tribute to Sean Connery on his 90th birthday:

Happy 90th birthday to the all time greatest @007 - Sean Connery. Sean, for me, was always the man. I walked in his footsteps - I had to look and dress like Sean Connery - I went to his barber's and tailors. I had no fear when I went up for the role - he was the guy who inspired me to never hesitate. Only a few weeks ago I was wishing Sean all the best for his 90th birthday. Now, I'm very sad to be condoling with his family and friends. Of course, Sean Connery as James Bond inspired me personally but seems to have encapsulated an age, the Sixties. I met Sean a couple of times and I was pleased he'd given my Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, his seal of approval. He was going to do my film many times and felt it was the best of the Fleming tales. But, to me, the most important thing was his work went far beyond Bond: into charity, into family, into politics and into golf. A man after my own heart. A great actor, a great man and underappreciated artist has left us. My thoughts are with Lady Micheline and Sean's children and grandchildren. Only love, George XXXA

@@JoBloOriginals It wouldn't be until For Your Eyes Only(1981) that a Bond film would have a more serious tone to it. Ironically in the opening of the movie, Roger Moore as Bond makes a brief visit to Tracy's grave. A rare tribute to Contessa Teresa by EON Productions. Speaking of EON, based what I've seen in the No Time To Die trailers, I have a gut feeling that the filmmakers have tried to replicate the emotional punch of OHMSS in Craig's latest. Not too sure that Craig and Lea have a convincing on screen chemistry however. Her character Dr. Swann didn't seem to like him in Spectre after all. But maybe she warms to Bond in NTTD. I'm skeptical though, considering that George and Diana had terrific screen chemistry, and no amount of acting "titles and accomplishments" can duplicate THEIR screen chemistry. Part of interview Connery in ''Playboy'' November 1965
PLAYBOY: In any case, ''Dr. No'' turned out to be a hit, and you found yourself under contract for a series ... exactly what you said you wanted to avoid.
CONNERY: Yes ... but it allows me to make other films, and I have only two more Bonds to do.
    PLAYBOY: Which ones?
CONNERY: ''On Her Majesty's Secret Service'' and possibly ''You Only Live Twice''. They would like to start ''On Her Majesty's Secret Service'' in Switzerland in January, but I'm not sure I'll be free in time and I don't want to rush it, although they say the snow will be at its best then. I'm not going to rush anything anymore.
PLAYBOY: We'll be looking forward to both films ... especially since we were fortunate enough to serialize both books exclusively prior to their hardcover publication. Do you think the success of the series will continue to snowball?
CONNERY: Well, it's a healthy market and it has been maintained because each succeeding film has got bigger and the gimmicks trickier. But we have to be careful where we go next, because I think with ''Thunderball'' we've reached the limit as far as size and gimmicks are concerned. In ''Thunderball'' we have Bond underwater for about 40 percent of the time, and there is a love scene underwater, and attacks by aquaparas from the sky, and two-man submarines under the sea, and Bond is menaced by sharks. Instead of the Aston Martin we have a hydrofoil disguised as a cabin cruiser, and Bond escapes with a self-propelling jet set attached to his back. So all the gimmicks now have been done. And they are expected. What is needed now is a change of course ... more attention to character and better dialogue.

OHMSS has always been my favorite... From the score, to the fight, plot, girls. It is actually the perfect Bond film. I even say Lazenby was perfect for the role as this one actually required to have Bond in a vulnerable role, emotionally, and feel Connery wouldn't have been able to pull that off with his disengaged attitude toward the series. Also, while a massive plot hole with Bond and Blofeld, I kinda look at it as Blofeld playing chicken with Bond to see who will make the first mistake. Lastly, it IS a Christmas movie like Die Hard. Best soundtrack for a Bond movie ! Really love this film, but over the years I've heard many comments about Lazenby's ego that aren't flattering. His natural confidence shows thru, and that's perfect for the role, but hurt his off camera relationships with the cast and crew. Showing up at a cast party he queried why he hadn't gotten a special invitation, especially since he was the star. the producer stated, " You're only a star if the fans say you are." Sounds like a reality check to me. The opening sequence is one of my all time favorites ! The car, the action, the dialogue. "This never happened to the other fella'" left me thinking, is he referring to the Prince in the fable of Cinderella, or more likely Connery ? Very clever writing, and that hook got me passed the obvious change in casting of Bond. Diana Rigg was perfect as Tracy. The whirlwind romance sequences almost plays as travelogue or an advertisement for jewelry shops. Very smooth editing. But the story is so good ! Bond's interaction with the head of a criminal empire to get information on Blofeld plays so convincingly. His single minded obsession to track down his arch enemy. Great stuff ! So is the tragic ending. There is no happily ever after for Bond, or for that matter, anyone in his life. Tracy is taken away from him just as he is on the cusp of a new life.

The Hulu film/docudrama “Becoming Bond” is actually a great backstory to this and the circumstances of Lazenby tricking the Producers into hiring him by completely making up films he starred in is just the stuff of legends.
This is simply as good as James Bond gets - the story, the action - everything - is just perfect.
There is no question that if it was Connery playing James Bond here it would be considered the best of the series by everybody- no questions asked.
As it stands though, Lazenby is actually very good considering it is his first film.
He has a great cool presence, is great in the action and even handles the humor beautifully- it is just in the emotional beats where his inexperience shows.

OHMSS completely makes Bond relatable, which is a huge plus for me and a huge strike for others. The scene at the ice rink where Bond realizes he's trapped and sits down to think/wait for the end is a moment I don't think we've had before or since (at least until Craig's Bond). It isn't until Diana Rigg arrives that Bond finds hope again and, this is key, immediately accepts her help in escaping, which she does splendidly. Some might see this as some sort of weakness on Bond's part or some kind of progressive slant at the franchise but it is done so naturally and without comment it truly makes one wonder why they ever went back to making most Bond Girls someone Bond either manipulates, rescues or often both. It is much more fun and engaging for Bond to have a love interest/partner who is as capable as he (see the excellent Moore film For Your Eyes Only for another example of this).

I just watched today this for the first time since I was a kid in the 70s/80s. In those days, Roger Moore was my favorite Bond. I always hated this movie, especially the tragic ending. No cool gadgets!?! I only watched it once before today. I was skeptical going in. When Bond looked at the camera and said, “this never happens to the other fellow,” I was about to turn it off. And then I took note of how frequently people got the best of him: Tracy overtakes him on the road to the beach, he gets taken by surprise by two villains (and more than once in the same fight), Tracy steals his ride (if only to drive up to her own car), he gets ambushed in her hotel room, she pulls his own gun on him, she bails on him in his sleep, she swipes his gun, he gets ambushed again... all this in the first 20 minutes. I’m thinking, this Bond was written to be a buffoon. And then I resented how he courted this suicidally depressed daughter of a monster; is this what James Bond would do? And then, after all that courting, he goes off on sexcapades with Blofeld’s patients, and was about to go for another round before he was caught. But I thought he was falling in love with Tracy? Bond is a cad!
As the story developed I started to appreciate the lack of cool gadgets, forcing Bond to rely more on his wits and cool demeanor. I immediately (from the start) recognized that Lazenby was a good fight actor; his fighting scenes were impressive. Lazenby’s acting wasn’t as bad as I remembered, it just wasn’t that cheeky Roger Moore interpretation of Bond. But his wasn’t that humorless Bond (like Timothy Dalton’s Bond) I remembered, either. I found that whole story element of Heraldry to be unique and fascinating; I paused the movie to research about Heraldry. Then, Telly Savalas was an excellent Blofeld and that drew me closer to appreciation. The skiing action was the best and most realistic skiing action in any Bond film; far better than what I’ve seen in The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, and The World is Not Enough. When Bond reconnects with Tracy as he is making his getaway from Blofeld, I was fully drawn into their romance and believed they were a perfect match. I had to reconcile Bond’s sexcapades as intentional in the film in order to add weight to Bond’s proposal of marriage; now it made sense. He was a real playboy in this film and that was highlighted when he read the Playboy and kept the centerfold. So he was dead serious about his feelings for Tracy.
I used to rank this as my least favorite Bond film. 25 of 25. But now I have to rank it as my second favorite, right behind Casino Royale. I think now that I’m in my late 40’s, the gadgets mean less to me than the character and the drama. That’s what these two movies excel in.

A small correction: Joanna Lumley was not Diana Rigg's replacement on The Avengers. When Rigg retired from the role of Emma Peel in The Avengers to do OHMSS in 1968, Linda Thorson took over as Patrick Macnee's new sidekick, Tara King, for what would become the show's final season, ending in 1969.
In 1976 and 1977, Macnee reprised his role as John Steed in The New Avengers, in which he had two costars, Gareth Hunt as Mike Gambit, and Joanna Lumley as Purdey. So, Lumley does have an Avengers connection, just not through the original TV show.
However, there are many, many other actors who appeared in both a Bond film and The Avengers. Just a few of the more prominent examples:
    - Julian Glover (Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only) appeared in four episodes of The Avengers.
    - Steven Berkoff (Orlov in Octopussy) appeared in one episode of The Avengers with Diana Rigg.
    - Robert Brown (M from Octopussy thru License to Kill) was in an early Rigg episode.
    - John Cleese (R/Q in the later Brosnan Bonds) appeared in one episode of The Avengers with Thorson.
And while it is a fairly small part, there is one other direct connection between OHMSS and The Avengers: James Bree was in two episodes of The Avengers and also played Blofeld's Swiss lawyer in OHMSS.

I also agree with many good comments about this movie yet never understood how press turned on George as James Bond because if anything it was taking James Bond back into the style of serious agent.
From there it became more about how many silly one liner jokes to get in with false fake looking backgrounds.
Just saying, does not mean I am right .

I really enjoyed OHMSS, i always hated how they got Sean Connery back for Diamonds Are Forever instead of continuing the Lazenby's story where he would chase Blofeld down because he killed his one and only wife. Also I almost forgot to mention Diana Rigg as maybe the best Bond girl we have seen so far.

I'm also a huge Lazenby fan! I found his childhood house in Qeanbeyan in 2018, and I own 2 other films of his, "the Man from Hong Kong", and "Kentucky Fried Movie". I also adored the doco-movie "Becoming Bond".

My favorite as well. I think Lazenby made a fantastic Bond. Given a sequel he would have taken over completely. Diana Rigg was my dream girl, and the best Bond girl. When he looked into the screen at the beginning and remarks "This never happened to the other fellow" you know its about to be on.

I was a freshman in high school when this came out and had been a huge Bond fan ever since I had seen Goldfinger at age 10 and at the time I just could not imagine anyone replacing Sean Connery. As a result, I saw it but decided to “hate” it. It seems at the time, I wasn’t alone. Now that we’ve been treated to six different Bonds, I think this film now gets its due as, without a doubt, one of the best, and certainly one of three that was most loyal to Fleming’s novels, the others being Casino Royale (Craig version) and From Russia With Love.

Excellent review!!!!! I consider OHMSS in the top 3 of Bond films as well as Bond novels. Lazenby gave a very sincere performance and, of course, the incomparable Diana Rigg and Gabriele Ferzetti were perfectly cast as daugher and father. Highly underrated film that has stood the test of time and gains more momentum every year.

Rewatched all the Bond films recently and no Bond film dropped from my top ten... except this one. At two and half hours long, the last hour of the film is Bond at his best. The ski chase is nerve wracking, the rally is fantastic, Diana Rigg’s Tracy may well be the best leading lady so far, the score by John Barry is one of the best of the series, Louis Armstrong’s song still brings me to tears, the action finale is sensational and the very ending is heartbreaking. After everything Bond and Tracy have gone through, it ends with the way it does... sad, very sad.
However the first 90 or so minutes of this film is IMO very slow, and the films plot really doesn’t kick in till 40 or so minutes in and that is what hinders the film for me. Sure its good for characterisation, Moneypenny has her finest hour here acting as peacemaker between Bond and M, but its too much.

I love the delay of the plot kicking in because the film focused on characters. Bond stumbling upon this troubled girl and trying to rescue her and Moneypenny's brief episode with Bond was stimulating to watch. For the first time, I was watching a Bond film that featured flesh and blood human beings with frailties. However, I will agree that the film spends too much time at the faux clinic and what also didn't help was Telly Savalas as Blofeld was merely a competent antagonist instead of being darkly perverse like Goldfinger.

After Connery, Lazenby fitted the part better than any other, and this is my all-time favourite Bond film, period. It is sad this film did not fair better...and that Lazenby did not return as Bond. In the beach fight scene his dress looks fantastic and I feel his costumes including the Scotsman' dress were well acted by him. Also the best title track of all...
