The original poem by Gabriele d'Annunzio was set to music by Francesco Paolo Tosti (1846 to 1916) and the English translation is as follows
The dawn divides the darkness from the light,
And my sensual pleasure from my desire,
Oh sweet stars,the hour of death is now at hand,
A love more holy sweeps you from the skies,
Gleaming eyes,O you who'll ne'er return,
Sad stars, snuff out your uncorrupted light,
I must die,I do not want to see the day,

According to his widow Anna-Lisa ,Jussi Bjorling loved Caruso's recording of this song and played it over and over again.It was always on hls Victrola in his studio and was still there in 1996 when she wrote her biography of him.

@@hostlangr The recording on the link is ,of course, not the original it is a recent issue with an overdubbed modern stereo orchestra. I prefer my own restoration of the original that I included in a L'alba separa compilation that I uploaded recently. To me the voice and orchestra never match properly on the overdubbed re issues. Aber heute werden ja fast alle Studioaufnahmen geschnitten und erst ein daraus resultierendes Ergebnis präsentiert. Der Link soll auch nicht auf eine bessere Qualität der Stimme von EC hinweisen, sondern auf eine Studioversion! JB und viele andere haben fast nur solche Aufnahmen präsentiert. Von heute gar nicht zu sprechen. Für einen "Vergleich" der Sänger ist dies jedoch interessant mAn. Viele Grüße! ⚘⚘⚘

I agree with what you say but the big difference to me is the fact that the editing/remastering of the Caruso recordings has been done almost 100 years after the original was recording and although the new orchestra, of course, sounds nice and up to date, the recording quality of Caruso's voice does not sound up-to-date and in using today's technology to reduce or remove the sound of the old orchestra the process takes away some of the beautiful, natural tones of Caruso's voice.

I like Caruso's best, it has more depth and drama to me, suitable fod this very emotional song. And yes, we have to remember he was singing into a horn with primitive equipment, and we're not getting 100% of the richness of his voice.

You are absolutely right, Michael, time‘s the problem... I just had a very nice conversation with the (Australian) owner of a channel I recently discovered - Vintage Sounds, and another one with one of his commentators. I love a good conversation, the way we have them, too... and then I realize that I spent most of the little time I have writing and reading, and writing and reading... And I don‘t regret it in the least, but still my playlist gets longer - and longer - and longer...
„Ideale“ is also a favourite of mine, as are many other songs by Tosti! I must try and see whether I ever heard „Ideale“ performed by McCormack and/or Björling; right now I just don‘t remember. And of course I’ll go look for the recordings on your channel!

Thank you, Michael, for your idea of providing a link... but it was clever of you to find out whether or not I had already listened to the recording(s)! I just told (wrote) a very nice lady that my brain assembles Swiss cheese: all holes and no substance. And believe me, things are getting worse!
Vintage Sounds is hosted by a very nice Australian gentleman (named John; I learned so much today) with a love for a good conversation and serious time issues. He wishes for a 72 hour day, and I offered to join the club. Shamrocks... In Germany we are fond of four-leaved clover. The fourth leaf turns „Klee“ into „Glücksklee“, „ Glück“ meaning „luck“ (and „Klee“ meaning „clover“, but you probably guessed that much 😉)

I lost a few subscribers when I included the Red Army Choir in the Nessun dorma video but, to be honest I would rather not have subscribers who can't separate politics from music. Often they are linked like the old Irish rebel songs that I love but I don't think that a choir that perished 5 years ago, singing a Puccini aria, can be linked to Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

This is a favorite song of mine and Bjorling is my choice!!
Simply put, Björling sings best. For me, that's what this's about. With that said, of course, the others are also very good versions, each in its own way.

I know that Jussi Bjorling doesn't know Italian language. However, I think he knows how to sing italian song more than anyone. I respect him.

Jussi was Swedish and was one of the world's greatest Opera singers but he also recorded other types of music.Sadly he died in 1960 when he was just 48 years of age.

@@michaelmcgrailengland Agreed ! Bjorling and Caruso sound so much alike it's hard to tell who is who but Bjorling had a much easier top . Caruso struggled with anything Higher than a Bb and even then Caruso at the start of his career cracked regularly on the Bb . That wasn't the case with Jussi he even hit a High Db in Stabat Mater.
You're right, of course, Caruso's was a deeper more rounded tenor than Bjorling but they were both wonderful in their own way. I remember reading in Anna-Lisa's biography of Jussi that he would play Enrico's recording of L'alba over and over again so I suppose it's not surprising that,except for the audio quality, both sound very similar.

So do I, but there are some moments when Caruso sings when I think he can never be equalled. Also, different great singers have certain pieces when they seem untouchable, when, for that particular night, their voices are on fire, for example, Corelli at Parma, singing E Lucevan le Stelle.
Only my opinion, I am certainly no expert, though I have a pretty good ear.
I have much better technical quality of the Caruso and Bjorling recordings than here in this video. I prefer Bjorling then Caruso. I think if John McCormack had recorded this song, he would have created competition for these two.

I'm extremely surprised to hear that you have recordings with better technical quality than the Caruso and Bjorling recordings on this video as , without doubt, my restorations give a far superior more true-to life quality to these old recordings than that heard from the original 78s or that produced on CDs which reduce noise but in the process degrade the sound of the music.
@@michaelmcgrailengland. No surprise at all. I simply purchased CDs from Metropolitan Opera gift store many years ago. They were from Nimbus label. As you can guess perfectly reconditioned with extra acoustic added. It sounds very nice. No distortions to their voices.
@@johnfalstaff2270 It may be no surprise to you but it certainly is to me and we'll just have to agree to disagree as we must hear or appreciate sounds differently.
From my point of view I'm more than happy as, based on the comments I receive, the vast majority of listeners to my channel hear the improvement my restorations make to these old recordings and appreciate all the work that I put in to achieve it. I shall continue uploading my videos as my purpose is to help to preserve the names of the great artists of the past.
From your point of view, at least you do not have to listen to what you consider the inferior sound of my videos as most of the music that I upload is already on CZcams in the original sound that you prefer and, of course, you also have your own collection .

@@michaelmcgrailengland, no. I like to listen to original records. But I do not have an access to them. All what I can do is either to purchase from music store or4 to listen from media sources. CZcams in this case. I just mentioned to you that in the middle of 1990's, English label Nimbus released many CDs with popular and famous artists. So, this is how I acquired them. I had original, one sided record from 1916 with "O sole mio" sung by Enrico Caruso. I found it on a flea market in Baltimore, MD years ago. The guy, apparently unfamiliar who Caruso was, sold it to me for 50 cents. But the condition of that record was terrible. Thousands of scratches. I keep it however. You, as I think, have much bigger access to find interesting records while I do not. Also, my advanced age does not allow mi to look for them anymore. In addition to that, what to do with those I already have. Nobody wants it. They may end up in trash when I am gone. Libraries are clogged with them. People prefer better to listen music from Internet. I think, I have already told you about that couple of years ago... Yorkshire in old conservative England has a completely different cultural climate among of older and younger residents. No such things across the Atlantic Ocean. Merry Christmas and much Happier then this one New Year 2023.

At one time I had well over 2000 78s but when we moved to a smaller house in 1998 there wasn't room for them all and I gave most of them to a dealer who sold antiques mainly but also old records etc. It was better than putting them on the rubbish tip or trying to sell them and hopefully they went to people who would enjoy them.
I'm 80 now and have a big collection of records, tapes and CDs and I'm making plans to dispose of most of those in the near future the same way that I disposed of the 78s as nobody in the family would be interested and I don't want them to go to the rubbish tip.
