Have you read the book? These are some of the main differences between the Crazy Rich Asians movie and novel! In the book, the Goh family was more subdued. Peik Lin’s family in the books is still distinctly “new money”, but one of the biggest changes is that they’ve never heard of Nick of the Young family. In fact, in the novel its implied that the Youngs are so rich that their entire family is something of a mystery. Also, every member of the Peik Lin’s family was amped up to be even more over the top in the film.

LOL you left out the most important difference - THE MAHJONG SCENE DIDN'T HAPPEN IN THE BOOK. And it's the most epic scene ever happened in this story.
Can we just appreciate that cover of Crazy Rich Asians? It looks so elegant.
Which one??? The book one or the movie one??
I think I can let pass the other discrepancies. I just HATED that Astrid and Charlie had so little screen time. I fell in love with those two in the books especially when he told Astrid not to change, and let Michael come crawling back
I think they will focus on Astrid and Charlie in the sequel
I rather have a movie based entirely on Astrid, it was so much more interesting than the actual story
Astrid was my fav !!!!! I wanted to see more of her too! Hopefully in number 2 she gets more screen time!
I know, I'm so in love with Henry shum as Charlie in the movie!!
CurlyTerise the second book tho so amazing !!!!!
This movie made me upset because I iust realize Im crazy broke asian
I'm Insane Broke White Chick, so I feel your pain without appropriating your broke Asian-ness.
David Moore ???
What more if you read it, Alamak!
There's also the fact that Eleanor was a lot less dramatic and materialistic in the movie, which I thought was a good choice because I couldn't take her seriously in the book.
Kristina Lauren this is true..Eleanor was more calm and calculated in the movie whereas in the book, she was overbearing and all over the place. Dramatic and materialistic 😂 But youre right i couldn’t imagine Michelle Yeoh doing that and it was better
Apparently, actress Michelle Yeoh insisted that the "tone" of the mother character be toned down from the book, or else she wouldn't have taken the role. This was a good change IMHO.
@@markmh835 thank god
But I think that’s the whole point
The whole book is hella extra
The time she arranged for her niece to be Rachel's gynecologist cuz she wanted grandchildren 😹
Yes!! I was unhappy the way Astrid's story was presented :(. But then again they can only fit so much in less than 2 hour movie.
Hopefully they go deeper into her story in the sequel!
RIGHTTTT?!!! I want more Astrid and Charlie Wu
One of the best movies of the year. The cast is super talented, the cinematography is amazing and the story is just beautiful. If you have the chance you should go see it in a theater near you. You won't regret it!
Denko I laughed my ass off while watching the movie
I regretted watching it. It broke my heart. All asian my foot. Where are the malays
Most Born and bred Asians hated the movie. It claims to 'celebrate diversity' but doesn't even come close to accurately portray the cultural diversity of Singapore. It was all marketing plot and further overhyped by many overly reacted Asian Americans.
Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian and Henry Goulding is half English and half Malaysian. They do have other Singaporean and Malaysian actors, like the actress who plays Rachel's mother and even some of the rich, snobby girls. Remy Hii, who plays Alistair, is Chinese-Malaysian and English from Australia.
The Young family in the story are ethnically Chinese, but they just happen to live in Singapore. Honestly, the cast is fairly diverse. The director could have gone strictly all Chinese, but they have opened up roles to people who are Japanese (Sonoya Mizuno who plays Araminta), Korean (Ken Jeong and Awkwafina - technically she is Chinese-Korean), and even Filipino (Nico Santos who plays Oliver). Singaporean and Malaysian actors were also casted for other supporting roles.
Seeing how Singapore is multiracial, they have a good mix of people in the CRA cast. It's a small step in the right direction, but you know Hollywood. It takes more than just one movie to make any kind of change, especially when it comes to representation when all Hollywood cares about is profitability. It took them 25 years for Hollywood to greenlight another movie with an all Asian cast.
Just be glad that the author turned down previous offers where directors offered to take on the movie only if they can change Rachel to a white girl to make her more "relatable" to the audience...
@@fleur_and_flower it is true the offers were offensive but what you said earlier is more offensive. Multi-racial. They cast singaporean and malaysian cast. You are either horridbly racist or sadly stupid. Those are nationalities not race. Just saying this movie is multiracial or all asian or is singaporean movie means you are either racist or stupid. Please do understand that this movie is racist and only support chinese washing and singapore tourism board.
You also missed one, the very beginning. London 1986. It wasn’t Eleanor who ended up buying the Calthorpe Hotel and she never made the call to her husband. Eleanor’s sister in law, Felicity Leong (Astrid’s mum) was the one who made the call-to her husband, Harry Leong (Astrid’s father) who then purchased the hotel from Lord Calthorpe for his wife, making Felicity the owner of The Calthorpe Hotel, not Eleanor. Also, the hotel manager, Reginald Ormsby, wasn’t asked to clean the wet floor in the book, but was fired and asked to leave the premises by the new owner, Mrs. Felicity Leong, Eleanor’s husband Phillip’s eldest sister 😊
I've never read the books but I've been looking up spoilers, and it seems like the biggest change is that the Youngs aren't even that rich in the books. They can't even afford to keep the house in the last book.
Geralda Mustika not to mention that Felicity Yound sneaked out on the guest list of the manager of Calthorpe who has been denying that they're not on the list where in fact, Felicity Young saw her name on the list as a guest.
They overly focused on the love story rather than the wonderful supporting characters .
As someone who hasnt read the book i didnt mind lol
Ikr the side story is more interesting for me, especially astrid's
I agree! The supporting characters’ stories were the reason I was hooked in the three books. The movie was good but it would never justify the book! There’s so much more to their story!!!
agreed.
That leaves a lot of room for SEQUELS!! Make Crazy Rich Asians a movie franchise!
gemma chan is just sooo pretty.
写给你的信 Ikr those cheekbones tho
@@OstrichOstrichBirdStoic46 That's a Korean idol I believe in the picture..not sure tho.
@@OstrichOstrichBirdStoic46 Yeah your welcome , no big deal. Yes I am doing well. Thank you. And yes I watch British and American movies.
I watched the movie first, then read the book. In that way, it’s been an amazing experience. All the other characters became even better in the second book. I’m on the third and final book wishing it won’t end. So obsessed.
Lol💕I did the same thing
read the book as well (in 3 days) after watching the book and I think this way it was even better because you were not disapointed about what they changed but more curious to find out more details about all the side characters
Despite it having differences, the movie turned out really well. Hopefully we can get a number 2 and see more of Astrid, Rachel's father and the others. Such a great movie, I watched it twice, its worth it y'all.
Sadly that won’t happen. Too much Asian films anyways
@@laqueenawilliams4762 tf are u on about
reading the book after watching the movie gives you a total new point of view for all the characters especially the dynamic between
Astrid and Michaels affair
and
Rachel and Nick’s relationship
it was beautiful the way we saw how both relationships changed throughout the book, representing how money and family plays a big role in marriage and social status, also,
Eleanor Young not being the main antagonist in the book, and instead it focusing more on Francesca really switched up everything
In the Book Eddison Cheng and Fiona Cheng had a daughter and two sons.
In the movie they had three sons.
Leonie Naik oh ya!
This is one movie where I didn’t really mind the changes. I feel that the movie is more suited as a movie and the book as a book. I really enjoyed them both. I also got mixed messages about Amanda in the book. She seemed more interested New York social life than Nick. In fact it seemed like Nick was on the the back burner and the only reason she considered him was because he mom was pressuring her.
• Ah ma was way more involved in the books. She wasn’t just a listless grandmother. She was the strict matriarch of the Young family.
• Astrid’s father Henry Leong bought the hotel for Astrid’s mother Felicity. Eleanor had nothing to do with it.
• Eleanor was nowhere nearly as intimidating as she was in the movies. Eleanor was just a simple socialite with the characteristics of a kdrama mother in law.
• Philip was more involved in the books and was an engineer.
• The Young’s don’t have a family business and we’re so secretive and old money and that’s what made them so special.
• Michael didn’t cheat on Astrid; he only wanted to get out of their marriage without divorcing Astrid to not shame her. The cheating thing was fake. He really did love her.
• CHARLIE WU.
• Alistair wasn’t some playboy asshole like he was in the movies. In the books he’s close with nick and he’s a chill lovable guy.
• The young sisters were hilarious and more devious in the books.
• Peik Lin was this fashion forward charismatic girl who didn’t look like a little chick. She was this voluptuous long haired fashionista.
So excited about the sequel, can't wait to see Harry and Gemma take centre stage ahhhhhh
Nicola Bree will there be a sequel???
Tanzim Samiha there’s talk of it by the producers for 2020
It has been greenlit as a trilogy. They already confirmed that they'll be filmed back to back
Let's hope that Nick and Rachel will be there too!
Zachary Khan Thanks; I haven't read China Rich Girlfriend or Rich Problems.
4:46 hey, it's Mike Chang. Man, he must be the most successful actor out of all the actors when Glee ended three years ago.
I love how they just replayed clips of the trailer hahah
Because they cant get the full movie
For those who care -
The book IS WAY WAY BETTER THAN THE AMAZINGG MOVIE!
The book series is addictive and I finished all three within a 3 week period😂
The books are so good and they only get better with every volume. I wish there was a 4th part, I honestly want to know more about Eleanor and Philipp's past and all the family drama
Me too! Got them all on the Libby app from my local library. I spent the next week looking up stuff on Wikipedia because I wanted to know more about the region, culture and history.
True 😹
@@schale8051 yea ps we need to see Colette, Michael and Eddie suffer like a lot please I hated three of them 😹
The movie gave Rachel more autonomy and personality in the book to me and I liked that!
Thanks for making this video! Every single thought came to my mind while watching the movie. And for others to know, the second book begins 2 years later with Nick not speaking or seen his mother Eleanor or Ah Ma since they revealed Rachel’s parentage as he was furious.
Also Astrid storyline is crazy from the first book to the last between Charlie and Michael.
Elizabeth Gonzalez so true
its a bit difficult to flesh out her story in the movie though coz she was a secondary character they’ll probably flesh it out on the 2nd film.
Katerine Catindig
I thought the exact thing when the movie ended. Even being a secondary character, her storyline packed a lot material.
Elizabeth Gonzalez I hope they make a sequel and give more attention to Astrid. She was def my fave character & I loved her story.
It's_the_truth me too! I do hope they explore her story arc more if they make sequels!
I'm sorry how is this video not going to even mention Rachel's mothers back story being completely taken out?
Ashley Barbosa apart from the wedding it was the main focus of the first book
They're probably saving it for the sequel
The book gave Rachel much more personality because I personally preferred Astrid in the first book but unfortunately, her screen time was drastically cut down.
i've seen the book cover since 2013-2014 but never really interested, i just watch the movie yesterday and fell in love with it so now i'm going to binge reading the series muahaha
I've read only the first of the three books, but thank you for summarizing the differences between the book and movie accurately (as well as crediting sources)! The changes were significant but understandable, though we can only hope that the movie sequel will be more true to the original.
The book was so different from the movie. It was hard to concentrate and not spot the changes
mlamarana I tried to concentrate during the movie but because of the changes I kept getting thrown off.
mlamarana there so many changes during the time. In the book,Richeal’s mom work in Cupertino, which considered a poor Chinese community. However, now Cupertino is much richer than before since Chinese Americans getting richer. Therefore, it is hard to just copy the book and reach the market.
mlamarana especially in the ending. I've been waiting for moment that Nick would propose. PS, I've watched the movie first then read the book. 😂
Was waiting for this!
One big difference you missed is the Mahjong scene which is not in the book.
Can we also talk about how Michelle Yeoh has barely aged a day?
Constance Wu
From Fresh off the boat to a movie
The side stories are what makes the whole book series. By book 3 Astrid’s story is generally so so addictive even more so than Nick and Rachael’s
Very very great list I like it a lot
Thank you a lot for like my comment
Is this why I feel the ending was rushed? Like it feels too easy to get Nick’s mom approval. Like? It feels anticlimatic
I need an Astrid spin-off. Like C.R.A 1.5. I love their story so much.
Finished the movie on a plane to Vegas an I have to say it’s better then I thought it would be . Definetly
gonna watch it again .
I just finished the book and yes I agree but I hope they make the next movie and MsMojo talks a little bit more about Bernard Tai! I feel like his character is definitely underrated. But it comes out a lot in the next book :) ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH EVERYTHING HERE
but fr tho, this movie was amazing.
How did I not know of this channel? New subbie
Thank you. Looking forward to reading the book after
MY COUNTRY IS FINALLY FEATURED ON THIS CHANNEL and its an entire full length video
Congratulations.
australia?
@@jdkrasinki2214 what? No, its Singapore
where is that? in china?
@@jdkrasinki2214 do you seriously have no life but to tick peeps off on the internet? 😂😂
More Crazy Rich Asians videos, please!
Major downside for me was Nick's proposal, it made the movie really shallow and predictable. It would have been more realistic if Nick didn't propose to Rachel.
thechristenedone iam pretty sure the happy ending is for money, people loves movies with happy ending.
There are so much good stuff in the book, it need a entire season mini series to cover it.
biggest shock to me is probably alistair's character. i read the book after watching the movie, and alistair wasnt really a bad character. he was still crazy with kitty pong but he's one of the few that supported rachel and nick's relationship
This is a movie that I loved so much despite the changes from the books, which I also love and I’ve read them all a couple times so far
i see many people having issues with the production and storytelling but i am proud to say that this movie was phenomenal, the story came out beautiful, it made me laugh and cry ( 4 times) and it's worth watching ;)
Wait, so Michael didn't actually cheat on Astrid??
No he wanted to end their marriage because he felt like he wasn't good enough for Astrid so he faked an affair. Actually a really tragic character in the book...
No he didn’t
@@purplequeen7944 until the 3rd book lol!
IT'S A GREAT MOVIE! i love all the cast! but while watching the movie, i keep on commenting in my brain, "wait! what?!", "no", "that's not there?!", "hey! where did that come from?!", "that's not what happened!" etc.! it's kinda hard to watch the movie if you have already read the book, actually. but i still enjoyed it, though. and i agreed with the voice over about a sequel,i think it would be really hard for them to make another one bcoz of all the twist that they've made. i think the story would be hard to have a part 2. jmo
I'm reading the book while on quarantine and yep it's a big difference idk if I love or dislike it yet
I cant wait for part two
Great movie! I am reading the book now
Absolutely adored the movie saw it twice in one day!! Sooooo freaking good. I liked the books too but I loved the movie more!!
no need the father when there's Michele yeoh as Eleanor. She's portray the character well.
dang i kinda wanna see the movie now
There's a lot of differences!!! But the movie is quite nice!! I already finished reading their books!!! 💙💙💙
I CANT WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!!!!!!
i haven't seen the movie. but if i am not mistaken, Rachel's family ordeal aka her father issue is not mention until the second book right ?
It is explained around the end of book 1 by rachels mom.(SPOILER) Rachel wants to go see him. Nick flies her mom out to stop her. Thats at the end of book 1
I honestly think they should have left the scene with Astrid and Charlie dancing at the wedding in the movie. It kind of gave you a new perspective on the guy who magically pops up in the end credits.
Oh.. I haven’t read the book but I’ve watched the movie. The proposal make sense to add if it is not included in the book because I think I would not like it much without that happy ending
To be honest, i am glad they make all of the changes. In the book, everything just so weird.
Honestly if they wanted to make it more accurate they'd have to make it a tv show but, between the cost of shooting in Singapore and the cast themselves they'd need a Game of thrones Budget to pull that off.
100000000% AGREEE😭😭😭 charlie and astrid‘s story is my fav after nick&rachel‘s but it wasnt even mentioned in the movie😭😭😭😭😭
I read the first book in like 6 days and I absoluetly loved it. I am currently reading the second book but slowly because I don't have a third book so I don't want it to end. I was looking for the third book and couldn't find it anywhere because it was sold out. I have more bookstores to go to. I truly hope they have them beacuse I need the third book. Like now. And I am a huge Astrid and Charlie shipper. They are my fave characters so I am very excited for the movie. And I truly hope I will find the third book and read it.
Can't wait for the remaining movies. wanna see who'd be casted as Rachel's brother. Book says they look identical
I really hope the sequel will happen.
I was really hyped for the Charlie and Astrid storyline but hearing that they aren’t as prominent in the film kinda makes me disappointed.
Yes the Goh family in the book really didn't know who Nick Young was. When Piek Lin went to drop Rachel off to Tyershall Park she came back and told her father about it. They then went to look online for it, and they couldn't find it.
Another one would be Alistair Cheng's personality change from the book to the movie
I enjoyed the movie but was disappointing that they wrapped everything up with a nice little bow. They made Rachel seem like a liar. One scene she's telling Eleanor that she turned Nick down and next thing you know the movie ends with an engagement party. I wish even thought the writers didn't know if they would get the chance for a sequel they would of had the guts to act like they would. The first book leaves you with so many questions. Stumbling upon the second book was such a joy. I honestly didn't know there were more after I finished the first book. I also didn't like that the movie made Ah Ma approve of Rachel. Astrid gets her engagement ring not Rachel.
kiatana six rachel had eleanor’s ring, not ah ma’s
Nick had Eleanor's ring when he proposed to Rachel the second time which meant Eleanor already gave her approval for the marriage. So Rachel didn't really lie. She was ready to let Nick go. But seeing that Eleanor gave her engagement ring to Nick changed Rachel's mind and ultimately accepted his proposal.
THE RING!!! THE FUCKING RING!!! THE RING!!! Rachel is not a liar. The only liar here is your heart.
but then that also isn't consistent with the book cuz Eleanor only gave her approval when she found out that Rachel's birth father is super rich
Pehsoua Xiong and Renelie Macalisang I said it made Rachel seem like a liar. SEEM. Which means I am not calling her a liar just saying that to me the movie made her look like one. I was mistaken that it wasn't Ah Ma's ring but really that makes me feel worse for Rachel. Because she thinks she has Elenor's approval when she clearly does not. Which she seemed to realize at the engagement party.
I can’t wait for the next movie.
Number 1 so trueee !!!! In the 2nd book, Eleanor Young just agree about his relationship with Rachel. That’s why, I thought so weird, how come that he end up gave Eleanor ring to Rachel , and based again on the second book : Rachel engaged to Nick, and her ring was chose by Astrid ..
* little spoil*
But the book reallyy really worth to read ...
Yup I’m reading the book thanks
I have finished reading the book and i hope they focus more on astrid and the others on the sequel since their story is more interesting
Most of the scenes in the movie were filmed in Malaysia! :(
Harry Shum Jr 😍😍😍😍😍
agreed that there were a lot of changes and i as someone who read the novel just can't help spoiling my friends with "wait this is what originally happened in the book" lol but it's a great movie nonetheless!
Also,
Princess Intan (though unmentioned in the book) wore the Star of Malaya and gave Kitty Pong diamonds. Kris Aquino should have done that because that gives her role justice. 😭
Also, Nick and Collin bailing out of the bachelor party should have been done as it is written!
Nevertheless, it was awesome.
I read the book thee years ago so I didn’t remember much when I watched the movie I didnt remember much other than the fact that Astrid’s story was COMPLETELY different from the book, that mahjong scene never happened, nick didn’t know he wanted to propose to Rachel till the end, the ending was SO different from the one of the book because Eleanor never approved of Rachel till the second book when she found out Rachel’s father was actually rich. And Rachel actually believed her dad was the bad man in prison when her mom then flew out to Singapore to make everything about her past clear. After watching this video I’ve realized how everything is different and now it’s actually bothering me
They also didn’t fly Singapore airlines unlike the book
Can you do one like this about Breakfast At Tiffany’s book and movie?
Frick I want sequal so bad this was my favorite movie and book series of 2018 hence I liked the movie I wanted to read the books and I loved both
I love the book and the movie. So fun and enjoyable
I was sad to see 3 things excluded.
1) why mahjongg?
2) bachelor party had 4 men escape (with a Turkish mate (another forgotten Asian)) to Australia to chill at Uluru
3) the kind of "sex" that Rachel's mom had with her husband guaranteeing no pregnancy.
rageguy311 the mahjong is actually largely significant it would be hard to understand if u don’t play it. Basically in short Rachel won the game when she received the 8 lines box thing but she let it go for Elenor to win basically accepting defeat. Once Rachel reveals that she own the game first, it almost like a second goodbye to Elenor. I’m sorry if it doesn’t make sense but this is the way I view it
The Mah Jong scence holds so much meaning about the background story and tension between Eleanor and Rachel, you can Google an article about the scene and tons of detailed explainations will be given to non-mah jong players or Mah jong rookies like me
Love the mahjong change it’s more cinematic, the 2 extra guys were irrelevant and the whole Rachel’s mom was anally raped was a little too dark for the kind of movie they were presenting.
Yeah I wish they would have told the full story of Rachel’s mum.
rageguy311 The Mahjong scene is actually a nod in respect to the movie THE JOY LUCK CLUB, one of the few movies casting an all Asian actors and actresses.
I think the CRA movie is far more better than the book. But the book is also nice though.
Wait wait wait wait, could the mystery man at the end of the movie have something to do with a sequel movie???
I wish there was a sequel
I think there’s will be a sequel of crazy rich asian.. and we hope so..
DO THIS FOR TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE AS WELL!!
But,,, Nick did propose. On China Rich Girlfriend. What i anticipated the most on the sequel for Crazy Rich Asian movie is about Carlton and Collete.
I enjoyed the movie and the books. They do a good job as standing as their own thing (which i think all book/game adaptation should be able to).
*henry is so cute :’)*
Astrid was the most beautiful woman in the movie
doing presentation tomorrow on the book and I never read it. Thanks for making this video so I don't screw myself over.
I love both the movie and book, but I would say all the changes were improvements or necessary due to film limitations.
Watching This On The TV
I love this film :D
This is FACT! 💯
and it was Felicity not Eleonor that buys the hotel at the beginning, i think they wanted to give a littile bit more spotlight to Elenor but still. Also at the island during Araminta's bachelorette party Rachel meets Sophie, and they just placed Astrid instead.
My favorite change was that Oliver actually gets to SAY that he's gay in the movie, rather than it just being implied through context in the books. I get WHY none of the characters would have openly acknowledged Oliver being gay (including Oliver), but it was a good call to add it in for the film. It was a nice touch.
That's because Singapore as a society is still largely not at all friendly towards LGBT people. That's why Oliver's role was very discreet in the book and in the film too.
Lovely💛
