#NintendoSwitch #SegaSaturn #Emulation - Hry
Nintendo: "hmmm, we can go after these people and then sell this with our next expansion. GOLD!"
"Wait! We were uhhh going to release that too. . . eventually. . . for a price hike. . . SO TAKE IT DOWN NOW!!"
Nintendo can't touch or sue the Steam Deck...
For whatever reason, my brain filled in "these OLD people".
@@hardkore360 huh? What does steamdeck have to do with Saturn emulation on switch? Lol
@@TonyJenn the Steam deck will run emulators including Sega Saturn without any homebrew or jailbreaking. Another advantage of the Steam deck over the OLED Switch.
The fact that it' s emulating the games with no tweaks is AMAZING. All it would take is a small amount of time optimizing certain games to make the entire library playable.
@Fat Chocobo this must be your first time in the pirate seen 🏴☠️
hopefully nintendo wont come over them and start selling saturn titles on their online service for like 100$ or something
@@chrispousson3057 Long live the pirates. They make the coolest homebrew sometimes
Wouldn't be the first time commerical Nintendo emus sold uncredited emulation.
I wonder who got ripped off/blackmailed to make this happen?
@Fat Chocobo new to the emulation scene huh? You 🤡
Reminds me of people inserting other Megadrive/Genesis games in to the Sega Smash Pack for Dreamcast once it was discovered the menu system was just calling an emulator with varying parameters.
That emulator was terrible, though. Sound so broken I'd consider it unplayable.
@@itsthem5699 lowering the volume it was great for 2001 console emu... its was graphical good...I edited echelon version of genesis smash emulator and made my own game 💿 for dc
The Switch continues to impress, not with tflops or any of those metrics but with how efficient the low-power ARM chip can handle almost any type of game.
Really is a great little machine.
ARM is the future of handheld and maybe even desktops
@@alinepiroutek8932 It will be, seeing what Apple is achieving with their processors and how they already rival high-end desktop CPUs. It’s the clear way forward.
tbh arm architecture is a great technology and the future. Android phones had already a great emulation experience 10 years ago, the switch benefits from a good chip made by nvidia.
Retroarch struggles with PS1
@@alinepiroutek8932 ARM is the most known instruction set with x86, but RISC-V might also be the future ISA on desktops and handheld devices, as it is an open source solution
Saturn is one of my favorites. Glad the emulation is coming along this well. Thanks for the video..
The input lag on Cotton for Switch is 11 frames, completely unacceptable in my opinion. But the Developers said they are going to release a patch to the emulator to fix the lag. Which means if they do then the emulator will be even better than it is now.
Lol believing anything
There are plenty of games where that lag is acceptable, like turn based rpgs.
@@ayylmao394 yeah but this is a shoot em up.11 frames is unacceptable
Jesus Christ that's terrible, especially for a Cotton game. I guess the only way to make it "playable" then is to have unlimited continues, save states and a windback feature, in good emulation fashion. It baffles me how people butcher retro games like that and think they're somehow "playing" the game, not to mention the asshats who have the gall to claim such an input lag-addled experience is superior because the upresed HD resolution matches their shitty LCDs better. Good thing I have an actual Saturn myself and can play it as intended on a CRT, and believe it or not that's in all fact crucial for having a real point of comparison for how the game is supposed to be played.
Never played Cotton Before, try it yesterday in handheld mode and I feel the game was playing good, guess I was a fool
Something manic about seeing house of the dead with cotton borders
hearing of how the games are running reminds me of a package deal you could get on psp. there's a Japanese eboot game out there that has 3 Turbografx-16/PC-Engine games in a single package. surprisingly, the games in question are all running off of ISO files within the eboot. and so pirates figure to just replace one of the ISOs with an ISO of another PC-E game to play whatever they wanted. i did the same thing and applied the English dub patch to Ys IV and played it long before Memories of Celceta came to the west
Your comment in turn reminds me of a PS Vita mod where a PSP backward compatibility game could be exploited to replace the game with a PSP custom firmware, and from there, run PSP homebrew and other games.
Dawn of Ys is the goat
Man I remember doing that EXACT thing. It was painful but I really enjoyed playing the game after i got it done with only 1 cutscene with some audio compression issues. Finding the right audio converter sucked though
@@kbhasi on the Wii U, the exploit for jailbreak was done with Brain Age. It could be done with any DS game but it would overwrite the game completely so that's what most people went for. I'm pretty sure it was the highest selling VC game on the system because of that. Maybe that's part of the reason why Nintendo doesn't want to go VC on the switch.
@@beardalaxy Brain Age was without doubt my favourite Wii U purchase... :D
Nintendo: "Emulation is bad!!!"
Also Nintendo: "Thanks for the hard work you did, its mine now, youre still bad though"
To be fair, this is a third-party developer that used this emulator to release some games, like many other third-party developers on multiple platforms. Also the emulator in question is closed-source, so it was presumably licensed from the owner to create this port of it to Switch.
Also, from what I know, Nintendo has always created their own emulators for their systems. I've never heard anything credible that they ever took anything from the open-source emulation projects.
@@marsilies SSF is sort of open source. Whatever changes this release needed might not be available though.
@@marsilies Nintendo had a blatantly pirated rip of an emulated Super Mario game that they put on the Wii Ware channel.
@@empoleonmaster6709
They’ve been called out a couple times for basically taking roms off the internet. At least it’s not the psx mini, which blatantly stole an outdated unoptimized open source emulator
Nintendo: stealing is bad!
Also Nintendo: *steals things*
Very cool to see this! I wish they added Sega Saturn games to the Switch Online expansion instead of Genesis. The Genesis games are already widely available, would've been cool to see some different systems on there.
They will, nso plus for 80 dollars
also a new saturn controller 😍
So true....I honestly dont think people would have complained about the price if it was Saturn games. Those game are not available legally...only through emulation
It's really bizarre choice to go for mega drive, then nintendo blame the licensing fees for the price but no one forced them to put sega mega drive onto their service just a lame excuse

Once again we're reminded why an OLED screen is nowhere near enough to lure us away from modded OG switches. Too much is being traded even if the OG screen is trash.
I think it is for newcomers and people who want more than one switch
Never as a replacement
The OLED isnt really meant as an upgrade for most people, it's just a better version to buy for people that don't have a switch yet. Besides, the OLED switch can be hacked just as easily as the old mariko switch
Oled has already been hacked.
Oled is hackable via chip, there's already schematics to adapt the old chips. Expensive to hack, points change and is more of a pain to chip it and like mariko won't have support for android, linux, lakka and other stuff till there's enough interest to work on that though.
THIS
0:44-3:02
Holy crap is that LLS title screen theme on the background? A neat surprise for sure.
Reminds me of a retail Dreamcast game that had a genesis emulator on it and a handful of roms. Hackers quickly ripped it apart to put in the entire genesis library.
That 3 second intro reminded me that there is a House of the Dead Remake supposed to be coming to the switch by the end of the year.
>nintendo overcharges for online service >MVG: aight imma boutta ruin these fucks whole year
I'd love a Saturn collection on Switch.
No you don't. You won't play any games but one or three and that's it. Just play them in your phone. Im playing on my android and it's cool.
@@shen-long9082 I'm very confused by this comment.

So happy to see you covering Switch homebrew again. Great video!
"Some of my favourite Saturn games... Sonic R."
A dreadful game, but for some reason I have an obsession with it
I wish you showed Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force 3 running on this, the holy grails of Saturn games would've probably made this way more attractive
Shining Force III, being a turn-based title, doesn't really rely on high framerates to function. Unless it doesn't boot at all I'd imagine it's perfectly fine. Now, I'd be curious to see translation-patched versions of the games running.
This just throws salt in the wound of that excuse of an online service Nintendo is trying to shove down our throats.
Rad video, love the 4k 60fps camera upload as well bro
Childhood memories - Running real good on the tablet - Great video!
FINALLY! Some actual Saturn emulation!
And on the go brilliant!
On a Switch yes, I've been running Saturn emulation for a couple years now at a high level (but on PC)
@@cleverestx a modded switch can run Android and yaba sanshiro pretty well, considering the switch hardware it's impressive how good Yaba sanshiro is
>:o adding Sega Saturn the the online expansion pack would be worth the expensive price tag, Nintendo online services needs a lot of work to validate it’s asking price
Love your show. Your story’s are the best on the net! Thanks!
This is pretty slick. Great video!
hi MVG, love your content! is nice to see a perspective from a developer! Keep the good work!
This is brilliant! The Cotton games and Guardian Force are great, I hope this discovery gets these classic games more attention. Castlevania Symphony of the Night for Saturn and Radiant Silvergun are now playable on Switch?! I admit I was disappointed at first after downloading Cotton Saturn Tribute for PS4 and realized it was emulation, but it's okay. I just want these games even if it's not perfect how I'm experiencing them. This is Sega Saturn; as noted it's difficult to emulate it's very different than running PS1, N64 or arcade games. But I was hoping for some enhancements in Cotton Saturn Tribute like Radiant Silvergun and Guardian Heroes had on Xbox 360.
I want those in handheld
Thank you. I had just suggested this yesterday. Should have known that you had this in the pipeline!!! Saturn is my favorite system!!!!!
Another great video! Thanks for keeping info on emulation on the switch current! This is amazing news.
Those static images on the sides of the game has me worried for the OLED version Switch owners.
I don't think anyone's going to be playing these games for a long enough session to cause any trouble for the screen. The Switch's own battery life practically guarantees this for everyone except for what's probably a handful of folks who play in handheld/tabletop mode while plugged in to a charger.
You can remove the custom borders thankfully
I read this on the switch hackign reddit, super cool! Im also lookin forward for the Saturn Mister core which also looks very promising at this point! The retro future shines bright :D
Idk why but the sight of 2 anime girls looking at you innocently while youre blowing up zombies is hilarious to me at 7:59
After the countless Genesis collections over the years, seeing Saturn emulation running well on even the Switch, how the hell has Sega not brought a Saturn collection over to Switch or anything else, I doubt there is one person on this planet that would prefer for ANOTHER version of a Genesis collection over a Saturn collection.
I'd at least like a compilation of Sega CD and 32X games.
So we can finally get Sakura Taisen on the Switch!
I love your channel man!
Another good video btw love the beard your rocking mvg. Makes you look like a necromancer of technology, a techromancer if you will
I always focus more on your explanations, no matter how complex they may be than those of any computer teacher, good video!
Wish Sega make a 3d beat em up collection of dynamite deka, Asian dynamite deka, spike out, spike out battle street and SNK make another metal slug anthology of all metal slug titles for Nintendo switch including physical release.. that would be awesome.. also zombie revenge..
Sega Saturn was an amazing sprite pusher... such an mazing machine, so many possibilities and Sega Dropped the ball...
The games run incredibly well. Practically every 2D game is fullspeed at stock clock speeds.
3D games mostly need a little overclock.
The real issue is the input lag. It's pretty bad in most games. In other games it's not even noticeable and it's random to what games end up having lots of latency. Panzer Dragoon for example is basically not even worth playing the controls are so sluggish and delayed.
The interesting thing is that the Devs of this cotton tribute game have expressed they are working on potentially improving input latency in their game which if they achieve that may possibly improve latency in injected games. I guess we'll just wait and see.
Why not just stream it from a PC? If you have a modded Switch, you can stream a PC to it running the emulator.
@@GoldenSun3DS true, but there are some times when you're out of the house and have no internet.
@@user-xn3kt6bn5r Then a handheld PC like Steam Deck or GPD Win 3 would work for emulators like that.

Kudos to the company who released this package, although they did not intent to enable emulation of other games, they did kinda made the best saturn emulator to date, just to sell the cotton games.
Either way this is both good for customers and devs, they get more sales and we get an awesome emulator

Very cool... nice to see... and GBAtemp rocks...
Nice find. Although - who wouldn‘t want to play Battle Garegga with a whopping 13 frames of lag...?
Me trying to get Kieo 2 flying squadron on the switch. My man this makes this 28 yr old very happy. I could let that inner child out again and maybe play nights too.
How is the compatibility??
Just gonna say, I never knew Saturn games looked like this, they look like modern indie games with smooth animations and creative use of 2D/3D models, makes me kinda sad to know it was a total failure
Your channel never ceases to amaze me. Thanks for the awesome content MVG!
Amazing news. I really hope they do something with this, would LOVE to buy Saturn games on the PlayStation store.
I like how you can play "House of the Dead" with kawaii anime girls on screen frame. 😄
house of the dead is made even better with that XD

Saturn games running on Nintendo Switch - *Mistakes has been made*
Surprised to hear PC98 Touhou music in the background. Good taste.
I would love to see something like the Genesis Classics Collection- one time purchase that includes a lot of the hidden gems of the Saturn library
Wait for Nintendo to add Saturn to its online service.
And then add $20 onto the price 🤑
they should put Saturn and Dreamcast there instead of Genesis/MD because there are Genesis collections already
also heck they should put GameCube and Wii games there
I would pay ever more if it did Saturn ( especially the 4 m ram games )

Input lag on Saturn emulation is something that bothers users since the beginning, even today, mednafen, SSF, Yaba, Kronos, none can eliminate it so far.
Loved the Driver 2 music in the video!
3:22 - Nintendo was ready to strike if you would tell users how to do it lmao
That's so awesome, love the Saturn. Thanks for this video
i love that the thumbnail pic is a lightgun game
Wow... the red and black seat in the opening shot makes you look like a cartoon supervillain .
[imagine it's the collar of your cape]
I haven't kept up with saturn emulation for a few years now and last I'd seen it still needed quite a bit of work so seeing this out of the blue was a pleasant surprise. It's pretty impressive that it works with so many games as opposed to the stock emulator on something like the nes classic. I guess that makes sense if it is a fork of one that's been around for awhile as opposed to one designed around running a small selection of games.
Dude U r truly savvy when it comes 2 all this home brew stuff #Saluteski
Nintendo switch online + expansion pack + Saturn expansion pack
I was actually going to import a physical copy of this collection. But electric underground warned about the input lag making the games virtually unplayable.
"Ya, if you ask me" what an introduction. Amazing first sentence. Everyone should start their CZcams Video introductions with the word "Ya". Amazing work here!
I definitely want to use this method to play the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast.
This Driver 2 music is awesome!
This game has 11 frames of input lag.
Still impressive though.
That's incredibly bad. Though, this is some awesome stuff here.
How does that even happen? Did the developers explicitly store the last 11 frames of inputs and process the earliest of them?
Devs said they're working on reducing it with a patch
Normally software itself would have either 0 or 1 frames depending on the way the frame loop is coded. And the only way it could have been 11 frames is if they went out of their way to store the history of last 11 frames.
@@groszak1 from Wikipedia “input lag”
Individual frames need not be finished within the interval of a screen refresh to output at an equivalent rate. Game engines often make use of pipelining architectures to process multiple frames concurrently, allowing for a more efficient use of the underlying hardware. This exacerbates input lag, especially at low frame rates.[2][3]
Imagine Suikoden and Die Hard Trilogy on Nintendo Switch...
If Sega Saturn is working this well on the Switch, it's high time to bring some more Saturn ports over. I'm definitely buying them if they ever do.
Playing MVG videos while developing iOS Swift apps, my Mondays are pretty good.
This are great news, please everybody should push SEGA trough mails to pick up this emulator and include more games.
The Saturn had a lot of interesting titles imposible to get anywhere else.
Pretty awesome, I would love to be able to play a bunch of my Saturn RPGs on something hand held. PDS maybe would be sweet :D
Personally I'd either want to see more collections or a Saturn Mini. I'm much more interested in owning these games in a way.
Now we need a Saturn mini !
yooo that die hard arcade game on the saturn was legit
This reminds me how hackers in the PSP era would do the same process to emulate PC Engine CD games on the PC Engine collections released for it.
I have a collection of PC games I am looking to emulate. But I need framework to put them in. Virtualbox sucks and even though the developer promises flawless experience what b.s. software. Maybe if you can would you let me know how i can extract Uplay package contents I have the rare app on wiiu still and I need it on USB accessable from a PC but my wii u is a retail console so whenever I try to see it on my flash drive it's not recognizeable. any ideas? do I need sandisk/pny complete access of some kind before I can MAKE my PC recognize it or is this still impossible. I really want to see if Uplay has some sort of embedded code that allows it to run allongside games.
What's interesting is that the Steam release of Cotton Boomerang and 2 that released recently both have encryption on the ROMs and differ in terms of file sizes.
Really wish that someone would go about decrypting those and getting the fan translations running without an external emulator.
So glad I modded my Switch. It was so cheap and easy. Everyone should do it. Its the ultimate emulation machine for most of the systems I care about. Now I can play handheld and seamlessly play on my CRT monitor if I want to.
Thank goodness for emulation!👾
Thats so cool. Modders/hackers are amazing with the things they find and create.
Great video. I really wish Nintendo gave us the Saturn games instead of Genesis for Nintendo Switch Online.
Oh shit this is a year old video. I have been holding off getting another handheld (got RG351P and V and love them) waiting for PS2, GC and above all Saturn emulation. My soldering skills are non-existant but I do know from where to import a modded Switch as well... This is HIGHLY interesting. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Sega Rally and the import shmups and fighting games on the go? Awesome! Commenting to remember.
That driver 2 music in the intro
Time for SEGA to release a saturn compilation
I have my fingers crossed for a Shining force 3, Wisdom and Holy Ark collection on switch, a very underrated system
Having been into emulation since 2009, I can say the Sega Saturn emulation has progressed a lot within these years. Maybe I'll buy a Switch for Saturn emulation alone one of these days.
Buy a steamdeck instead for that and a whole lot more, including switch emulation
You need a first generation Switch. Besides, the Steam Deck will rule emulation.
Just waiting for Cotton 2 sales to suddenly spike and the devs wondering why their game suddenly got so popular in Europe and America.
Switch hacking isn’t that big of a community. You need an early model switch to do it on top of it.
And after you mod it, you could probably just get a dump of Cotton 2 either way lol.
Hacked switch equals great Saturn emulation? I now have my reason to take that step now! Thanks!👾
How I think the Sega Saturn was developed:
