Setting up the Fender Mute: • Mastery and The Fender... - Hudba
One of my axes made it into a Puisheen video....somebody pinch me. Mike breathed so much life into this beautiful guitar, it's truly incredible.
May I ask why you swapped out the pickup?, lovely guitar btw
Ima simple man. Mike posts an offset video, and I watch.
I feel the same about your vids!
Same
on my momma
Thanks for another amazing walkthrough and demo! I’d love to see a video where you directly compare a Jaguar and Jazzmaster tonally, and maybe offer insight about what you think the strengths of each are and where they each respectively shine. I know there are plenty of videos out there doing this, but I know you’d do it best 😊
The voice-over work, at times, vaguely reminds of Patrick Bateman describing his morning routine. I dig it.
Your channel is so underrated you deserve more subscribers
That's super kind of you to say!
Outro Jam has some True Romance Theme song (You're So Cool) vibes. Love it
i was thinking that too and then saw your comment haha
Always a good day when I hear from my old pal Voice Over Mike.
Glad to hear that you’ve been busy. I had no doubts that someone as skilled, knowledgeable, kind, and hard working as you would land on their feet.
Appreciate this!
idea: list dirty rags on Reverb as preloaded mojo applicators 😅
Incredible! What a guitar. I can only imagine the owner’s face upon seeing it for first time after being brought back to life.
He’s 2 comments up 😂
This is still my favorite genre of CZcams video. A guy working on a guitar.
I love the muted sound of Jags, but I hate how the mute makes the strings go slightly sharp when engaged. Even with minimal pressure and correct mute adjustment they still go a bit sharp, because the vibrating length of the string has been slightly reduced. So on my own Jag, I repurposed the trem lock to fix the tuning when the mute is engaged. The trem lock is set to push the trem down ever so slightly, so when I flip the mute on I also engage the lock and it stays in tune.
What a beauty and she sounds purdy too! Love that outro jam you played 👌❤
Super beautiful Jag!! Sounds amazing too. Too bad we didn't get to hear the neck pickup in lead circuit
I have 08 MIJ with Antiquity IIs and CTS pots and Mustang saddles. Sunburst, black pickguard, black pickup covers, tremolo arm tip and so on. I love my Jag, but also all the Jags.
I decided that I’m going to dip my toe into the offset world, and subsequently found your channel. Over the past few days I’ve watched soo many of your videos, and I sincerely thank you for the knowledge that you share. I’m going to a relatively local store next week and trying out a CV 60s JM lefty that they are getting in from their warehouse. I like it I buy it, safe now in the knowledge that I have received from your good self that I can get it playing beautifully with the correct setup. Thanks.
that's one the perks of being american. the slight chance that one day you may inherit such a wonderful old gem of a guitar with all the stories and family blood running through it. that ancestral connection one feels playing such instrument must be unimaginable. wonderful job
My morning just made better with a new Mike Adams video, keep up the great work Mike love your content
Beautiful playing and gorgeous guitar after your cleanup!
Thank you!
Loved watching you breathe new life into this beautiful Jag, Mike. I can't believe how it turned out, it looks amazing! Nice tasty, heartfelt playing too! 👍
cant beat a 60s sunburst🔥
I just love watching your enthusiasm for these instruments !
Man the depth comes right back to that lacquer after the car polish and so much about this guitar is absolutely gorgeous but sometimes i just fuckin hate sunbursts... every once in a while instead of looking like a gradient of color it just ends up looking like 3 separate colors
You have a really great speaking voice, FWIW.
He sure does!
60 years old! Hear it go!!!
Very nice guitar and very nice video sir. Thanks.
such a sweet outro song honoring the time honored age of the instrument.
Great job! Nice to see you back, too!
Man did I miss these videos with guitar repair/ setup. Love it.
I have the same 64 Jag guitar, they are works of art. I respect your opinion on mojo, but I’m leaving mine intact. Just cleaned up frets a little, lemon oil the finger board, still need to replace dead mute foam though.🤙🏽🤙🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🙏🙏great channel btw!
Appreciate you putting this out. Welcome back mike!
Always super relaxing and calming seeing you do your thang on a nice Jag ❤
I hear that you met Ted from Ontario while in Chicago. Very cool. Red Bear summit.
Love this vid!!!!! At the shop where I work, we have a 1966 Jaguar on consignment right now, and it is a honey of a guitar! It has a larger neck than most vintage Jags that I have played, and I love it. I don’t have the funds to buy it myself, but it is nice to have it in the shop. :) I’ll have to continue to be happy with my 90’s MIJ Jag. :) Thanks for continuing to help us all learn to care for our offsets!
Beautiful Jag ❤
You are a true artist and craftsman!!!
Fine work as always.
I'm sitting here with my perfectly awesome Jazzmaster, and a bad case of Jaguar envy. ;) Great video and beautiful guitar.
Great video, Mike! I love these kinds of videos from you - I first found your channel during the early days of the pandemic when you were putting out a lot of these in PA. I feel like I've learned a lot about guitar restoration from your channel, and would love to see many more like this. Your channel inspired me to get my old '64 (I think! Haven't checked the pickups) Jag looked into a few years ago and I wish you lived on the east coast so I could get you to take care of it for me versus the guy I chose who did nothing to fix its problems. :(
Thanks for Sharing Mike 🎸 🎶 💪
That sounds excellent.
Great job!
Wow, that's nice! My '64 Jag needs to meet you!
i saw the Sunburst and had a smooth brain moment as i panicked thinking “wait, Pancake is a Jazzmaster, right?”.
I think when i think of you, the coke bottle and charcoal frost metallic Jags come to mind now first and foremost.
Yes
Amazing! As always 🙌⚡⚡⚡
Great video as ever, Mike. And what a beautiful guitar! All the best from sunny Edinburgh 🏴
Coffee and an Offset video, good times!
Love this!!!!!!!! i own a 1964 as well!!!! and this gives ideas!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you
Nothing cooler than clay dots, Mikey boy!
Kicking my ass for selling my '64 Fender Jag for $75 for books for Tech school back in '69 . . . ARRGHH ! This included a tweed style HS case . . .
Love Mike and his channel. Now, sell me that bad boy 😊
oh wow that tone at the end. be still my beating heart.
You ARE the Adam Savage of guitar tube. :)
Great video! Would love to hear what you think of the new Vintera II Jazzmaster!
You should do a book on setting up Jaguars properly !
HELL YA
I went to upvote at the end of the video and realized i had already upvoted. My bad.
Sounds thicker and fuller than a Jaguar is legally allowed to :)
That's the old, flat pole pickups. They hold some magic that the later staggered pole pickups and reissues don't seem to have. The original flat pole pickups have a great attack and midrange focus rather than the brighter, slightly thinner sounding later pickups.
@@jackgreenwood1817these are staggered, ‘64 wound with plain enamel, not very degaussed either. After rewind the neck measured 6.08k
@@Sundayhandwound ah yeah I see now, interesting! I have flatpole pickups in my '62 that have the same bite without ever sounding brittle or thin.
I wonder what gives old pickups that magic sound? I guess you'd know as good as anyone :)
@@jackgreenwood1817 some sound better than others, time passing makes most pickups better too.
Great job, Mike. Looking forward to the next one!
great video as always. Also, todays the day… new jag/jazz review video on the horizon? 😇
Baby wipes and Deep Woods Off (sorry for brands) get almost anything without damage (still rely on a test spot though).
youre infectious mood and expert guitar work always brightens up this trans girl’s usually tough days, thank you mike!!
Great video once again Mike. That is what a Jaguar should sound like; punchy, focused and with plenty of mids. Those original flat pole pickups hold magic that Fender is yet to replicate in their reissues.
Have you come across any boutique winders that get close to those early Jaguar pickups' sound?
Thanks voiceover Mike!
Mike I would like to see your take on the G&L Doheny since it's an offset guitar that Leo Fender also designed I suppose. Keep up with the good videos!
Excellent video! Did you need to do anything to the wood where the water damage was present (e.g. to prevent mold/rotting)?
Voice over mike , reminiscent of the WonderYears in vibe
Dude. This is wild. I came by your channel last night, after thinking you hadn't uploaded a video in a while. I was wondering if I might have missed an upload. Now here you are today, my favorite offset aficionado, working on my favorite guitar. What a gift!
BTW, I string my Jags w/Burly Slinkys too. Great strings for the short scales!
@7.40 all I could think was "STICKY GLUE FOAM"
I think my dad has one of these. If he didnt give it away. I want it so bad.
Hi Mike !! Love your videos !!! ❤❤❤Have you played the Squier Classic Vibe 60 Jazguar Charcoal Frost Metallic??? Is a very good-looking Jaguar but I'm not sure about the rest....could you give me some advice please??
Many thanks and greetings from Barcelona !!! 😀😀😀
Hey Mike, Have you ever seen a C or D width neck? I'd love to play one of each to try em out. My 62 Strat is a B which seems to be what 90% of fenders came with. But I I know you love them SKINNY NUTS!
Hey Mike, have you gotten your hands on any of the new offset Vintera II's?
I would love to see your thoughts on them, especially the Bass VI and Jazzmaster.
I’m curious to know if Jaguar pickups can handle more drive or distortion than the ones on a Jazzmaster. Love the Jaguar but hate 60 cycle hum.
That mute 🤤
Do you think you have the chance to review the new Rivera 2 ?
Wow, amazing work with the case! Wait, there's a longer version on Patreon? I didn't get a notifcation...ooh 32 minutes!
hello puisheen i love you
Sounds great (as always!) 😁
A mute question: do you often have mutes that actuate as easily as that? I've tried fitting one both to a body that was pre-drilled for the mute and one where I drilled the holes myself, and with both, the 'switching' is stiff and doesn't fully engage in either position sometimes. Any rookie mistakes I'm likely making or reccomended tweaks to the mute parts? I've tried tightening it down low and that makes it quite stiff. Any higher and it interacts with the bridge itself which can't be good for keeping intonation. Using slight neck shims to allow for proper bridge height too!
Mr Puisheen,
Silly question: is it possible to use the switches and wiring from a Jaguar on a Jazzmaster?
Of course, I’m considering some delicate modifications to the Jazzmaster pick guard, to accommodate the switch plates from the Jaguar.
What say you?
I'm of the opinion that mojo is honest wear rather than grime.
Hi Mike, I have 1965 jag and I am experiencing the whole circuitry to be somewhat microphonic. It is especially noticeable with drive pedals, and if I use to it goes into a, how to put it, “phase kinda feedback”? It is noticeable even with clean sounds. When I tap the body, neck, pickguard, control plates, even the strap buttons, you name it, the pickups simply pick it up. I’ve seen the foam under the pickups, it is all hardened and deformed, do you think it could be caused by it? It is manageable but pretty annoying especially with the gain… thanks so much!
the naptha don't mess with the finish on neck/body?
Hey Mike! I have a 1964 Jaguar with really bad backbow on the neck tried to twiset the truss rod screw but nothing happens 😭 any tips can I send it out to you haha
What did you do to that neck pickup cover?
very good job! I have a 65 fiesta red too.pu heights suggested? sometimes it sound to me very thin I use 0,10 (I know it's a Jaguar)
Awesome guitar you have. Just roll the volume and tone knobs way down alot of the times. Look Tobias Hoffmann up for awesome Jag demo.s aswell very warm tones
Hi, what if i just bought a JM and when I use the tremolo, the bridge doesn’t rock a lot like the ones in your videos?
Hey puisheen,
I have a Vintera 60s Jaguar HH and I’m looking to upgrade the pickups. Do you have any suggestions that work with the spin a splits?
Between this video and your Johnny Marr one, I'm starting to wonder if I need a Jag...
i have an identical 63 jag in identical condition - now you have me curious to check the pickups.. mute is gone LONG ago - is it worth finding a mute to add?
you didnt have to file the nut when the thicker strings??? i thinking of taking my jagstang from 10- 46 to the 10-52
Hey Mike great video! I just bought an old Gibson from a Smoker x) do you think I can get get rid of that smelly tar sh** on it with naphtah ?(its a nitro-finish)
Holy hell.
I wonder how much it would cost to get this work done??
Hey Mike, do you have any opinions about the vintera jazzmaster and jaguar HH mod? I watched some videos on CZcams but nothing as technical and clarifying as yours. Thanks :)
Hey Mike, I have a very similar '63 (literally down to the shorted neck pickup). It plays decent as it is, could use some new frets, BUT the real issue is that the truss rod no longer offers any additional relief at it's loosest setting. Any recommendations to remedy this? Does it need to be heat pressed?
Joe! If the rod is maxed out with very little effect, then I'd suspect that heat treatment is the only way to get it straightened out. Of course, I haven't seen the thing and can't say for certain, but I see this a lot and generally at this point, it's the best way to deal with this issue.
@@Puisheen Thanks Mike, I figured that was probably the case. It's max loose and thankfully it plays well as-is, but of course would love to have full truss range. Thanks man, really appreciate the reply! ps.... now I need to look for some pickup dates!
Hey Mike!!! Greetings from Greece! I love all the stuff you've been doing and you' re great guitar tech and guitar player. But i would like to ask you about two things..First my AVRI '62 needs a refret and i want to put some medium jumbo frets. What are the best options that i have according to you? And second i would like to know how can i get one of those t-shirts that you're wearing in this video? Thank you man!
So long as you have a luthier you trust, nothing wrong with a refret to your liking! Jescar, Dunlop, Stew Mac--all of those brands have a ton of options in the medium jumbo department. If I want a bigger fret I often use Stew Mac 149, but I prefer the smaller 148 myself. The T-Shirt is from Fretboard Journal's The Truth About Vintage Amps podcast
Can i clean my 63 jag with that stuff the build up on mine is covering the finish. its much worse. its like a layer of gunk. The finish on the jaguar is also not as clean as this one. Very fragile kinda scared to rub finish off. Thanks t
Hi Mike, I was wondering if you could help me figure out what mastery vibrato and bridge I should use for the squire 50th anniversary jazzmaster. I think I saw you put some on one at some point. I live in Dallas, and I don't know of any offset techs around. Everywhere around, here is geared up for country players and their guitars. I'm a shoegaze, noise guitar type player, so that sort of leaves me in a bit of a pickel. Great video, as ever, by the way.
You can get the bundle OMV / OMV-P. Both include the thimbles you may need. The only difference is cosmetic in that the OMV-P vibrato plate is buffered to a high polish while the other is matte sanded finish. Bridge installation instructions is included so any decent luthier should be able to install it, it’s not that difficult.
Just here to back up Biff (is this the 1950s Biff or the 1985A one???) and yes, I'd just go for the bundle including thimbles. Squier and Fender body inserts can vary a lot these days, and using the Mastery inserts will ensure a proper fit. Go for the OMV KIT or the OMV-P KIT based on your preference for a polished vibrato
Hey Mike! If I can, I would like to pick your brain for a minute. I have a Squier CV 60’s Jazzmaster that I’m looking to replace the pickups on. (Fender CuNfie cobalt Jazzmaster set) looking inside, the guts are leaving little to desire. Do you know of a vintage style pre-wiring harness that you would recommend? And what the best pots would match these pickups? Also have you had any issues switching out the Squier neck with a fender neck?
Again thanks for your time!
(I know your a busy man) 🤘🏼🤙🏼
Oh! 💡
What do you think about removing the rhythm circuits, and replacing it with the Eric Clapton mid boost kit? There would definitely be room for it in the routing already there.
A Jazzmaster with a full cup of instant fuzz always on Tap. 😁
Where did you happen to buy that extra body from?
Either you changed your mind on treble or that guitar is one of the chimiest I've ever heard. It sounds sparkling.
Treble on amps = bad to me, but bright guitars are A-O-K
