    Been wrenching 50 years...good for you for tackling this DIY. You don't absolutely need to remove the oil fill cap....the crankcase will drain just fine. Examine the drain plug.....many are magnetic and they hold metal shavings, which you want to know about. There may be a copper washer on the drain plug....worth using a new one. If you expect to make a mess removing the oil filter,you can punch a hole in it and drain out the oil. Hand tightening the filter is rarely enough. Use your strap wrench and give it a little more. Just my 2c. I own a 94 GT. I believe our Carswell built in Flat Rock, Michigan.

    Hi Josh. I had a First generation Probe, 1989. I swear to God half the car was Ford, half was Mazda. Getting parts at the time was frustrating as hell. But, it was one of the sweetest cars to drive, I put over 250,000 km on it. Enjoy, it's a fun car, even if they shoehorned the engine into the bay.

    Dont feel bad about the rotor not fitting on the distributor bro... They had 2 Different sized rotor shafts ..I cant recall the exact dimensions, but it happens when replacing the rotors that they often hand you the wrong one... they should have known there were 2 versions ... At the very end, it Still sounded like it was missfiring and rough but I was only able to hear it for a moment... a longer clip of the engine running and revving would help... you said it was fixed so thats what matters.. great work!

    Just a quick FYI for you, the wheels are styled to be directional. In your case, it appears that the driver front and the passenger rear wheels need to be swapped. The wheels should look like they're sweeping back as the car moves forward. Good luck with your car. I too own a 1995 Probe GT that I purchased brand new in 1995. It is certainly a quirky car that comes with its own set of issues and can be a real pain to work on.

    I really enjoyed this video on the Probe as well. You've already learned and done more than I did when I had mine. With what I have learned since the ownership of that car that I sold 18 years ago and what I have taught myself since then I wish I still had it sometimes. Please continue to take us on this Probe journey. Did you know that the first gen Probe actually offered a 4 cylinder turbo model? They didn't offer this in our 2nd and final Gen cars. For a 2.5 liter V6 at the time your probe and mine were rated at 164hp. I knew this from memory. A turbo would of been insane on the '95 and '96 GT. Manufacturers usually underrate the horsepower ratings for government safety standards and insurance rates. Anyway, I won't tell you how fast I got mine up to, but it is "rated" at 136mph with no governor. Hee hee. I loved your auto parts worker skit. So true. You are correct that the engine was by Mazda and the design by Ford. I felt more assured in the reliability of the car being Mazda and not Ford.

    Toxic masculinity doesn't exist, men do, and idiots do, even jerks exist. Parts counter guy sounds like he didn't know his job well enough to bring out both parts or maybe they didn't have both parts. The question about O.E. direct, jammed the radar and wasn't helpful. That you can expect at any shop, parts store. Best thing to do is reset the conversation, clarify "this one doesn't fit," and have them bring out the part or both to see which one will fit.
    Always assume the parts store guy doesn't know, 1. anything, seriously anyone can work there after maybe a training video, 2. anything about a Ford Probe even if they demonstrate they know "things." That means you've got to be the one that knows the things you need to know. Sometimes there is confusion on part numbers and which specific year car those parts will work on. Which is not your fault or even necessarily the parts store guy's fault. I've definitely purchased the wrong rotor for my Probe GT before and not known until i was trying to fit it in the distributor. 95+ distributors were the better more reliable ones. My 94 is running on one with a 95 ecu or the maf swap 99 Millenia ecu. This after 3 or 4 failed 93-94 distributors failed. Probetalk.com has a lot of information on these situations. It's best to search the site through google, to find what you're looking for. You are also welcome to ask me. I've had my 94 for 11 years now, ZE swapped, mtx, headers 2.5" exhaust. drives like O.E. with 50 extra hp NA. The right combination of Mazda parts with the exhaust. It all could go back to stock as well, theoretically.

      @skip741x3 Před 4 lety

      good advice bro! I also have the 95 gt... mine daily driver for 26yrs 210,000 mi....how hard was it to ecu swap to the 95 system? ours is obd1.. did the conversion get u to an obd2 system or is it still obd1?

    • @pgtmr2713
      @pgtmr2713 Před 4 lety

      @@skip741x3 The conversion is OBDII I can plug in a bluetooth scanner and read functions. O2 sensors may not read correctly since there's only 2. It wasn't really hard at all. You need to either find the parts or buy them as a kit from the guy selling ECU harnesses. I bought my ECU harness and made the IAT/MAF harness myself cutting up an extra VAF I had for the plug. The IAT, ECU, MAF I got from a junkyard Millenia. It takes me 5 minutes to swap either way. You can feel a difference in the higher rpms. Better idle too.

    Ha ha, pretty nice blue & brown PCV valve from Rockauto. Identical to the one I purchased (no improvement).
    Yesterday I also got rid of my last (fingers crossed) problem, a noise in the engine caused by one of the auxiliary belt
    tensioner pulleys, the one that runs the alternator & A/C compressor.
    So I have two questions for you, can you please answer?
    1) What was the root cause of the sputter? Distributor cap and rotor only?
    2) I also ordered one rotor from rockauto and it didn't fit, so can you please share the part number you finally purchased and fitted ok, and where did you get it?
    After one year restoring it, I have lots of experience in many aspects of this car (I have even done some electric mods to improve it) so please feel free to ask me if you have questions during your restoration process!

    • @ssanmor
      @ssanmor Před 4 lety

      Thanks. That rotor is not valid for my car, I suppose your car year is 95+, mine is a 94, so the rotor is different but there are still some not-compatible rotors with the same form.

    • @ssanmor
      @ssanmor Před 4 lety

      I solved the rotor issue, the ones valid for 94 are those with "1/33" letters on top of it. I managed to replace it but noticed no improvement, there was still some hesitation when hard accelerating between 2000 and 4000rpm approx.
      Then I rechecked base ignition timing with a strobe gun and found that it was retarded around 3-4 degrees from the nominal 10º BTDC as specified. I readjusted it and now hesitation is gone.. A timing gun is a good investment for this (and other) cars, I strongly recommend to get one. Timing is adjusted by bridging TEN and GND.
