When I was in my early twenties, I worked at a horse ranch/breeding/equestrian center in California. I was part of the team that cared for the paddocks and barns at the front of the ranch, a.k.a. the part that visitors and neighbors were most likely to see. Needless to say, it needed to look as close to immaculate as reasonable. From mid-spring to mid-fall, the sun baked everything. Mid-summer heat waves could reach a high of 110+ F. So we would begin the most laborious barn chores at sunrise to beat the heat. We used a sweeping method to get everything. Typically, someone would manage the wheelbarrow while others scooped, so we rarely had to carry it very far. We always worked together as a team, so we got through the morning mucking pretty quickly. Throughout the rest of the day, we would "spot clean": dash out to remove the poop as soon as it was spotted and then retreat to the shade. Honestly, the owners (a married couple and their young adult daughter) were genuine horse people who understood "poop happens" but we took pride in keeping our part of the ranch beautiful. A few times a week, the owners would grab a rake and help out, and they got up just as early and worked just as hard as we did! They made it clear through their actions that they hired us to assist them, and not to do everything for them. And honestly, it would have been impossible for just three people to care for 45 horses and keep the ranch looking so beautiful, plus all the feeding, watering, grooming, training, exercising, etc. They always provided unlimited water and Gatorade in ice coolers, too. It was hard work but it was also fun.

When I was in middle school I had a friend who owned a horse named Zora I loved getting to go over after school or on weekends because I would help muck and clean the stall. Her and I would see who could stack the most on the rake. Between her and I we would knock her chores out and then I'd get to watch her ride and practice on Zora. Funny how horse poop brings back fond memories.

I don't muck my pasture (unless you call collecting fertilizer occasionally mucking) we just take a little homemade spreader through the pasture to well spread the fertilizer, it helps the grass grow. Also, we have pretty good bit pasture and three horses, it would take half the day to muck.

I rent a field for my 2 girls. I'm the only one on the farm that cleans their field.
I have my field set up for rotational grazing. The front part is where the round pen, the run in and my chickens are. They always have access to that. The rest of the field is divided into thirds.
I have my own mower and spreader. Once a week, I clean the areas they're in. I have a smaller muck bucket. I park the spreader in one section, then fill and dump the bucket until the area is clean.
I could probably yeet it, but then I'd have to clean up what misses the bucket. No thanks.
Depending on the time of year, I'll then mow, spread the manure, then go over it a few times to break it down more.
My spreader doesn't really work that well in the winter. So, I'll clean daily and fill in low spots in the field.

Cuz I felt like writing about it:
I start at the gate or door so I walk through as little as I can. For a small space, I muck in a wide circle, usually starting in whichever direction looks dirtiest. If it is a larger space it would be more of a spiral pattern. If it's a really large space I make a sort of wide serpentine pattern, or I might place the wheel barrow, clean a radius around it, then move the wheelbarrow to another area and repeat as needed.
Don't make overloading a habit, the tines weaken faster and if anything falls off, you will pick it up twice. I pick out as much as I reasonably can, if it can't be picked up because the tines are too wide apart, I'll let it go unless I have time to kill. For bedding, I'll take out bigger loads of the poo piles and worst of the obvious pee spots, after that I take smaller loads so I can shake out the cleaner bedding onto a clean spot. I don't worry about getting aLOT with one fork, because then I have to go slower to not drop any or miss a spot. Instead, I go for speed on smaller loads to make up for the small quantity per load.

In fact geldings are just as messy as mares. Only stallions sniff the poop and turn around to put their mark on the pile. Geldings and mares just sniff, but do not turn around. Maybe if a gelding was castrated at an older age he will keep the habit. But I have a Friesian stallion who poops all over the place, and I had mares who were very clean.
