they did not retcon, big notable lore people are just jumping to the wrong conclusions and are upset that they weren't AS right as they thought they were.
btw some notable things that already eluded to the fact that the veil and traveler are more connected than we thought are from the lightfall campaign, and a lore implication I have yet to see a single person touch on. In the lightfall campaign Ghost says, while directly above the veil, that it gives him the same feeling as the traveler (he doesn't just say this for the hell of it, and not everything that exhibits paracausality makes him say this!). That and the info we get later saying that the black heart was a vex simulation of the veil (another thing ppl call a retcon), people just took that as is, but its important especially when you ask yourself where was the black heart located, in the black GARDEN. The black heart is said to have directed those vex to make the GARDEN, therefore what they simulated was a PART of the gardener. What part not sure but there have been a lot of symbolism, metaphors, analogies and iconography in D2 that deals with the MIND BODY and SOUL, so the veil is probably the mind (brain/ memory) if I had to guess. Which means that the body(some sort of conduit that can distribute the light) is the Orb we call the traveler, and the soul(true essence if you want) is what we haven't seen yet and is likely what the witness is hunting for on the other side of the traveler's Orb portal. If the witness can take its place or control it they can rewrite the universe to be what they prefer.
My understanding has been that the Traveler doesn't want to be united with the Veil because when they are connected they basically enable admin privileges for reality

Traveller is the physical and the veil is the meta physical. Merging the two will bring thoughts and ideas to life. The final shape is an idea and the witness needs the two the merge to bring it into reality. Thats my theory
The taken strand shotgun was the highlight of this season for me. I got it crafted with enhanced overflow and cascade point and oh my lord it’s so much fun. I recommend it so much.
I think maybe the veil containment stuff should’ve been like in between the story missions or something, and as the story progresses and you get to the end, it builds up to this big reveal about the veil
Honestly, the story was just "get strand, then use it". The narrative material in veil containment should have been the main campaign, and strand should have been side missions
@@evancole6852 Yeah, I think what made The Witch Queen such a good campaign was that it was *about* Savathun and didn't come with a new element to distract from that. Too much of Beyond Light and Lightfall's campaigns were dedicated to discovering and learning a new element/class, and it's always going to be an unsatisfactory narrative when you take a gameplay toy and treat it like it's the main story so that much less time is dedicated to the characters and factions and ideas and events that are Destiny's actual story.
Veil Containment should have been the seasonal story of Season of Defiance. The cabal stole data (instead of taking prisoners) from Neomuna and we gather those data packets and decode them as the season around Lightfall plays out.

She's the reason the Eliksni are with us (Quria drove them to us in desperation), she's the reason the traitorous factions are gone (Savathûn's song heard by Lakshmi) and she's the reason the Cabal had to seek us out. She summoned Xivu to their world making it appear to be a sacrifice in her name, but was already turned from the Witness. She knew she'd die in the removal of her worm, she knew we'd try to kill her again when she tried to take the Traveller... God damn genius doesn't even touch what Savathûn is.

If anything I really wanted to play the Savathun’s song strike again. One of my favorite strikes and now that we know more about savathun, they couldve changed the dialogue to foreshadow whatever’s going to happen in season 22. Other than that though, I actually enjoyed this season as well

I liked fishing as a break from all the action of explosions and whatnot. It’s a nice time to put on some chill music, and just fish. I hate how public events get rid of the fishing spot though
If fishing had more depth to it I'd agree with you but its just timed button pressing and feels like it was made purely to waste our time trying to get the exotic fish for the quest.

People would LOVE to just sit and chill doing some fishing for a while but you literally can't AND you lose your "fishing focus buff" thing because it gets interrupted constantly by fucking public events... Deep dives were okay but ultimately I think a lot of the weight of the season is being held up by sandbox. The sheer variety and power of our builds these days is incredibly fun to mess around with and loadouts/qol have made it easier then ever. I really hope they can figure out a way to make compelling content cause the game FEELS so damn good to play right now. There just isn’t much to do with all this power/variety
I disagree right now to be honest, the power is turning me away from the game, no challenge, no more satisfying gunplay, it's all just explosions and enemies dying too quickly, destiny lost its identity

Agreed. Destiny on a base level (guns, abilities) feels as good as it ever has to play, and the increase in build variety, integration of subclass 3.0 with weapons/perks, unification of all build systems under Armor Charge, and QoL improvements like load outs means the base part of the game is just so satusfying. I took a pretty lengthy break from D2 in the middle of the season. Then I came back and just threw on Ace of Spades. Remembered how fun it is just to go around in vanguard playlist or crucible and proc firefly. And builds have been another highlight as I’ve gone back into destiny these last few weeks.

It wasn't in a lost sector? It was in the finale cutscene of a WHOLE SEASON built around communing with an ancient creature to understand who/what the witness is? Not disagreeing that it should of came out pre-lightfall.

The quest step for that week was to do a lost sector and then return to ahsa to see the cutscene. At the end of the season it plays a cutscene where ahsa tells everyone that savathun must be revived.
3:54 in relation of the "retcon" A Bungie senior narrative designer weiged in on the Unveiling debate in a PCGAMER article & the discussion of "has the Witness been retconned", down below is brief details of the article Senior narrative designer Robert Brookes recently made some interesting comments about the Witness, the Winnower, and the lore book Unveiling. In particular, he makes it clear that Unveiling is in his words a 'parable' and 'religious text' (something many of us already knew). He also suggests that the garden, gardener and winnower described in Unveiling are metaphorical- 'Players believed it to be 100% fact: there was a literal garden, there was a literal gardener, there was a literal winnower. And now it's starting to become clear that those may not actually be just concrete ideas, but metaphors or things that are far less concrete and clear! And he says at the end: 'Whatever the Witness says, maybe don't trust it (which implies that the Witness wrote Unveiling which was pretty obvious imo as It was trying to sway us to Its side during the time of SK through BL) aswell as the majority of things being metaphorical which isnt really a retcon but some people were upset by this as it was confriming the book that was detailing the beginning of the universe/everything was metaphorical instead of 100% fact, we know the Traveler is the Gardener & that the Witness's people were the ones to give it that name, but the Veil hasnt directly been called "the Winnower" like the Traveler/Gardener was, its kind of implied that the Witness is "the Winnower" as Its people craved a Winnower then when they merged Ahsa said "they merged into the salvation they craved, plus It (the Witness) went by the name "Winnower" as it was narrating Unveiling)

Yeah, people really do not seem to understand the Witness’ plan at all. It’s literally in the name Winnower. With the flower game, the board always ends up with the same predictable pattern in the end. The Gardener wants to create new patterns and so it attempts different starting positions, but those new positions always end up dying out in favor of the predictable ones. The Witness sees that, while the Traveler can create life, it’s power can also lead to unnecessary suffering for those that don’t fit the pattern. The witness intends to prevent that unnecessary life from being created, much like how a winnower separates the chaffe and pests from the necessary grain. By preventing that unnecessary life from being created, we’re left with the predictable pattern/final shape. Saying the veil must be the winnower when the Witness literally fulfills the role of an actual winnower makes no sense
I had fun with this season, I just wish I had people to play with. All my friends got completely turned off from the game by sunsetting and straight up removing old content from the game :\

One thing I really appreciate about Datto is that he feels like a breath of fresh air in a polluted environment. No matter what situation, he's always the voice of reason and clarity within the community, thinking more about the big picture rather than having kneejerk reactions to a lot of things (despite a part of this video being a hot take that I personally agree with). Datto, you're the one few Destiny Players keeping me sane in an ocean of negativity. Thank you for never faltering on your thoughts and opinions.
Definitely one of the more objective voices when it comes to destiny 2. The game has A LOT of flaws but not everything is doom and gloom. There’s some stuff to be excited about tomorrow, and people who are excited shouldn’t be afraid to voice their opinions in a community that’s increasing with negative reception of this game (reasonably so).
So the Witness is the Gravemind from Halo, and now Zavala is being voiced by the Arbiter himself, Keith David. Some things never change. As for the power levels bit: I don't mind that power isn't going up, because I am frankly sick of grinding pinnacle activities only to get 5 chest armor pieces. Badluck protection applies to armor stats, but not armor drops themselves. But my biggest gripe is that the increased monetization for content makes it more feasible to pay for everything up front. Expansions, Seasons, and now Dungeons. Hard not to be cynical when you have to tell your friend they can't play content with you without paying up, and it could all go away at the end of the content year.
This season got so much right, Deep Dives and GOTD were both aesthetically amazing experiences. The lack of level grind definitely left a lot of downtime which made stretches feel particularly empty. However I played more this season than at any point in the past year.
Wish the loot was a liiitle better as well but other than that, it was a pretty solid season. I really like the deep dive concept and I hope season 22 brings us another unique activity. They also mentioned that the seasonal structure is changing from here on out so I’m cautiously optimistic about these last two seasons of the lightfall era 🙏

You're one of the few. This was overall one of the least played seasons in YEARS. Even big content creators were saying on twitter stuff like "oh man last week of the season in d2 i guess i have to go grind those season pass ranks before its finished". I got to rank 100 and stopped. In past seasons i've hit rank 240+ and usually end somewhere between rank 100-200... this time though i completed the season pass for the rewards and was DONE.

Idk where datto gets the “deep dives were a massive success” from…not too outlandish from a guy who likes the idea of battlegrounds replacing strikes. Pretty much datto at this point have said that “this is expected from Bungie, so it’s good”. Which translates to if Bungie does the bare minimum by doing the same shit they’ve been doing for 4 years now, that’s good content. To him, deep dives will always be good, but he will always criticize menagerie…
Something else to take into consideration is that this was the season where bungie showcased Marathon and most of the community felt as though profits from destiny were being funneled into ultimately another game. Regardless if it is true or not, community morale really dipped
Arc Warlock felt amazing. Especially chain lightning or ionic trace builds. And most importantly the damage reduction mods from the artifact paired with the damage reduction fragment made it feel somewhat viable in higher difficulty stuff. A lot of the negativity was from things outside of the season itself. That negativity still affects the game's reputation, but the season itself was good.
I kind of dislike how arc has little to no DR or Regen of its own without doing anything else exceptionally well. It looks like the point was that you move fast so you don't get hit but that only works on hunter
A seemingly small detail that actually has me excited for the future of D2 is a little thing they mentioned in a recent blog post. They mentioned they were adjusting their focus regarding seasonal content, wherin the first two seasons of each year are the direct fallout of the newly released expansion, while the other two seasons are focused on building towards the next expansion.

The mysterious lore book written by an unknown narrator that right at the beginning tells us that it is a metaphor and that at the very end Eris herself told us HER interpretation and tells us to not trust everything in that book, THAT same book is not actually 100% true? The big complaint is that we had the Unveiling lore book for so long that a lot of people accepted it as true. For a recontextualization to come, not in Lightfall, but a season was one of the big issues. The other half of that is that it was replaced by the same story that happened to the Fallen, but the Fallen didn't merge. We sacrifice knowing the creation of the Destiny universe that explains motivations for the Traveler, the Witness, the creation of the Vex, and more for The Fallen 2: Darkness Boogaloo.

The Fallen lost everything, the Witness literally found its purpose, and most importantly the Fallen wants the Traveler back (or they want revenge), the Witness doesn’t care about it anymore, it wants to go beyond the traveler. The Gardener is just an obstacle, an enemy to surpass. It’s nothing like the Fallen. That’s like saying that the Hive and the Fallen have the same story. The Traveler is just at the center of basically everything in Destiny, but it was like this since the beginning…

A lot of the same building blocks that are there are the same as our story and the Fallen's story. We can at least agree that a revelation like this should have been in Lightfall. Thematically this was probably my favorite season and to be completely honest it’s one of the only reasons I played at all this season because I actually wanted to take a break prior to the season. I agree that I’ll look back on this season fondly
I really love the underwater theming. Even when it came to the underwater traversal, I don’t think it was ever long enough for me to get bored. Even then dungeon underwater section. If you knew where to go it wasn’t any longer than something like the transition areas in prophecy, duality, or spire.
For me personally, it was the mediocrity that did me in. Story? It's interesting but there are just so many things that feel unpolished. Story and quests? OK. Not great nor terrible. Game balance patches? Semi frequent but don't always make sense. Destiny has just become too mediocre for me to keep playing with games like tears of the kingdom and Baldur's gate 3 out and with a new fromsoft game coming out soon. It's like being offered to choose between a free 60$ and a free 100$. There's no reason to take the 60. That said, that's just me. I genuinely hope the game succeeds in the end because I love the world bungie has built.
I do agree that this season itself was okay, but I don’t think burnout was the reason. The state of the game is just horrible right now to the point where it drowns out everything else.
State of the game is ass and even when burnt out I'd be compelled to hop on to peruse dust store and shaders. Completely uninstalled for Remnant, Baldurs Gate, and the game I've been waiting for for the past decade: Armored Core. Extremely liberating
To answer the Ahsa question- it's revealed in the Siochain's Scuba Shell lore tab that she is of the same species that the Worm Gods were before being corrupted by the Darkness, so it's surmised that she knows from the knowledge bestowed upon the Worm Gods by the Darkness.
Diddy Kong Racing song in the background of the Ad section is phenomenal. You just became my favorite content creator because of this. That is literally all it took.
The lore retcon was the Traveler being the Gardener and the Witness, the Winnower. It was understood that the Gardener & the Winnower were something leagues above our petty fights in the universe. There's even a line from Savathûn from Season of the Lost where she tell us to stop caring about the line between Light & Dark and look up to what stands above us.
They did so well with the story I forgot what was going on and I guess I'm going into veil containment to look for a reason to care after a 2+ month break 😅
I feel like it would be a good idea to add Origin Traits to armor which scales with the number of armor pieces you have from that set. For example, the Spire Of The Watcher armor gives you a % increase to hip-fire precision.
Deep Dives and their pressure trials specifically were very fun. Optional difficulty increases that offer better rewards should be a continued practice in these seasonal activities going forward.
I do have to say, deep dive is probably my favourite seasonal activity ever. So much fun. I still haven't completed the whetstone encounter but I still have fun
props for the Diddy Kong Racing music during the sponsor. Really tickled my nostalgia with feelsgud while I thought about nommers. I loved Deep Dives, despite the fact that matchmade blueberries never activated the hard mode. Roguelike buffs, underwater aesthetic, bigger challenges.
My biggest question is: if the Witness took all the planets and held them for a year or 2. Why on earth did he wait until now to bother with Ahsha. If he had her and sloanne literally in his own little dragon ball

I share your opinion on season 21. In a vacuum, season of the deep was a fun season with some interesting content. Definitely above average. But as you said Datto, the drama and the clash between Bungie and community kinda overshadowed all positive aspects. We have a clanmate that lives for online drama, and he wasn´t one to be convinced that S21 was actually ok (maybe even good). Because the drama was there and that was also his opinion. Which is sad because this was a solid season and I for my part enjoyed it
Personally I would like if bungie made a master mode for last wish with adpt weapons and armor as rewards. I liked the ghost of the deep dungeon a lot very fun finished it within the first day but master mode is crazy with the champs being spammed.
I really really hope that we get some kind of core Deep Dive mode in the game to. I think the Infinite Forest is an obvious place to do this kind of activity, but something like that that is procedural. I think the critical factors for success are: 1. Infinite potential floors, with the clock being the only thing that forces you to the end. 2. More diverse modifiers. The ones in Deep Dive are great, but I think things like the immune Darkblade Knight in the Halloween Infinite Forest would also be great additions. 3. A mix of advancement sections, as well as objective defense. Deep Dive having only the latter got a little old after a while. 4. Some sort of worthwhile loot to chase to give me a reason to push further and deeper. I think if we could get that, this would really shake up the PVE scene in a really positive way.
The problem D2 has always had since Y1 is that you can't really just log in and PLAY the game. You need to do one of the prescribed list of bungie activities or go and fill out the checklist. Which makes the act of logging in feel like you're just logging in to do chores. Sometimes the chores are fun and other times they're something you dread.
That’s entirely a psychological problem. Don’t get broken by the fomo, go replay a campaign mission or screw around in patrol or just take a break, no one is stopping you. Though to be fair there are plenty of incentives that make it feel otherwise
Overall I’d put this at 6/10. Seasonal activity is slow and too enemy sparse Deep dives are cool but not fleshed out enough Exotic quest is really cool but the exotic is the most mid exotic we’ve gotten since Manticore GOTD in my honest opinion is one of the worst dungeons. Everything in it is a slog. Boss health is way, way too high and the final boss mechanics are far too bloated for how much health she has. The platform one between encounters overstays it’s welcome. The weapons are kinda meh too with the exception of the stasis wave frame. I’m only going to play the dungeon until I get the exotic and then I’ll probably never touch it again. 3/10 Story is pretty good and has a good hook into next season. Not much to add here. 7/10
A lot of people have been acting like this season has been the worst yet. But in terms of content this has been the freshest in the last TWO YEARS: deep dives, artifact changes, and fishing are all stuff that don't really have a parallel in previous seasons and this season was already half done when they made these changes for those who don't remember the "we know the seasonal model is tired" community post.
The bar wasn't that high and they still failed to clear it for most people. Fresh or not this season was very unfun for many, examples being deep dives needed sentient teammates that know the hidden bonus mechanic which ruined random matchmaking and fishing being literally one button, wait, one button. Throw on the gliches and the general state of the game.... How is this not one of the worst if not the worst season yet?
deep dives are this seasons only strength imo, hard to just say its "fresh" just bc there wasnt an afk farm like fishing a year ago. salvage and this seasons story have to be one of, if not the most, bland and cookie cutter that we've seen yet imo

I’ve been doing deep dives this whole season (I’m a solo player) trying to get to tier 7 with ransoms and was unsuccessful until two days ago. I got two other random titan players so we had three titans. We ripped through and got tier 7! It was my first time getting tier 7 and I also got the catalyst for wicked implement which I got previously with a three man group. There needs to be a way to quickly communicate with ransoms so that you’re all on the same page without typing and without sending friend requests.
Outside of all the exaggerated hate…best dungeon, above average seasonal activity, great narrative, loved the underwater aesthetic and fishing for exotic farming is very useful. People need to go take a break…it’s like children who need a nap and don’t realize it. Easily better than every season last year. Thanks Datto!
The retcon is literally in the same season, Maya going crazy and creating a Lakshmi communion, because of the the veil, does not make sense if you look at what happened to the witness. The witness clearly wasn't influenced by the veil, nor has the neomuni, nor Sathona, Nezarec, or anyone others aside from, Calus/the communion, and Lakshmi.
Some good stuff in the season but the seasonal story wasn't one of those things. Hoping next season is a banger since this one felt more like a season of the Hunt.

I have to say, I'm so glad that I committed to a hiatus from D2 a month before this season. Just for the drastic increase in free time I noticed I had on average. That hiatus did come with me missing the game, but on one occasion I went and played the season intro mission. I realized what I was missing wasn't something Bungie could provide, so I closed the game after completing the mission and continued on. Watching Datto's videos about the state of things and how the season turnout had the community all up in arms. I seriously got tired of the community itself, and thats what drove me away from the game. I truly hope I come to regret not being apart of season 21 while it was new.
Inb4 watching the video to know what my opinion should be: This season sucked. A lot of story and character potential that was not capitalized on. Salvage and Deep Dives were terrible even if Deep Dives were dipping their toes into some interesting design spaces. This half a year of Destiny has not been it and hopefully we can see a pivot soon. Given that SoTG, though, I won't hold my breath.
the "retconned" lore is about the gardner and winnower the flower game and the first knife. Which ive always viewed as a creation myth rather than actual lore. Something to try to explain why things are the way they are and to give a purpose to a god like machine that doesnt directly talk to people nor said its actual purpose or reasoning. With the Witness being its own winnower it just shows that the lore in question is just its view on the traveler
Its hard to make a game feel full enough for the hardcore players that ONLY play destiny, and the players that only have a few hours a week to play (not letting them feel like they can't keep up or missing too much content or loot)
What makes the veil containment quest even more overlooked for most people is that you need to do the post campaign exotic quest that has you do a bunch of tedious busywork for an underwhelming machine gun. Then when u get the quest you have to go to 3 different areas to take out groups of tanky vex and then you get the mission which at first is just the second half of the last mission but with a tormentor instead of calus.
I’ve really enjoyed this season tbh. The deep dives were great fun, if not occasionally frustrating with blueberries. The story made serious progress despite the poor technical implementation. The dungeon armour set was fire. The new GM was challenging to platinum the first couple of tries (mainly due to the tedious middle section) but I’ve gotten my value for money for sure

they did not retcon, big notable lore people are just jumping to the wrong conclusions and are upset that they weren't AS right as they thought they were.
btw some notable things that already eluded to the fact that the veil and traveler are more connected than we thought are from the lightfall campaign, and a lore implication I have yet to see a single person touch on. In the lightfall campaign Ghost says, while directly above the veil, that it gives him the same feeling as the traveler (he doesn't just say this for the hell of it, and not everything that exhibits paracausality makes him say this!). That and the info we get later saying that the black heart was a vex simulation of the veil (another thing ppl call a retcon), people just took that as is, but its important especially when you ask yourself where was the black heart located, in the black GARDEN. The black heart is said to have directed those vex to make the GARDEN, therefore what they simulated was a PART of the gardener. What part not sure but there have been a lot of symbolism, metaphors, analogies and iconography in D2 that deals with the MIND BODY and SOUL, so the veil is probably the mind (brain/ memory) if I had to guess. Which means that the body(some sort of conduit that can distribute the light) is the Orb we call the traveler, and the soul(true essence if you want) is what we haven't seen yet and is likely what the witness is hunting for on the other side of the traveler's Orb portal. If the witness can take its place or control it they can rewrite the universe to be what they prefer.

@@evancole6852 Yeah, I think what made The Witch Queen such a good campaign was that it was *about* Savathun and didn't come with a new element to distract from that. Too much of Beyond Light and Lightfall's campaigns were dedicated to discovering and learning a new element/class, and it's always going to be an unsatisfactory narrative when you take a gameplay toy and treat it like it's the main story so that much less time is dedicated to the characters and factions and ideas and events that are Destiny's actual story.
Veil Containment should have been the seasonal story of Season of Defiance. The cabal stole data (instead of taking prisoners) from Neomuna and we gather those data packets and decode them as the season around Lightfall plays out.

If anything I really wanted to play the Savathun’s song strike again. One of my favorite strikes and now that we know more about savathun, they couldve changed the dialogue to foreshadow whatever’s going to happen in season 22. Other than that though, I actually enjoyed this season as well

I liked fishing as a break from all the action of explosions and whatnot. It’s a nice time to put on some chill music, and just fish. I hate how public events get rid of the fishing spot though

Deep dives were okay but ultimately I think a lot of the weight of the season is being held up by sandbox. The sheer variety and power of our builds these days is incredibly fun to mess around with and loadouts/qol have made it easier then ever. I really hope they can figure out a way to make compelling content cause the game FEELS so damn good to play right now. There just isn’t much to do with all this power/variety

Agreed. Destiny on a base level (guns, abilities) feels as good as it ever has to play, and the increase in build variety, integration of subclass 3.0 with weapons/perks, unification of all build systems under Armor Charge, and QoL improvements like load outs means the base part of the game is just so satusfying.
I took a pretty lengthy break from D2 in the middle of the season. Then I came back and just threw on Ace of Spades. Remembered how fun it is just to go around in vanguard playlist or crucible and proc firefly. And builds have been another highlight as I’ve gone back into destiny these last few weeks.

The quest step for that week was to do a lost sector and then return to ahsa to see the cutscene. At the end of the season it plays a cutscene where ahsa tells everyone that savathun must be revived.

A Bungie senior narrative designer weiged in on the Unveiling debate in a PCGAMER article & the discussion of "has the Witness been retconned", down below is brief details of the article
Senior narrative designer Robert Brookes recently made some interesting comments about the Witness, the Winnower, and the lore book Unveiling. In particular, he makes it clear that Unveiling is in his words a 'parable' and 'religious text' (something many of us already knew). He also suggests that the garden, gardener and winnower described in Unveiling are metaphorical- 'Players believed it to be 100% fact: there was a literal garden, there was a literal gardener, there was a literal winnower. And now it's starting to become clear that those may not actually be just concrete ideas, but metaphors or things that are far less concrete and clear!
And he says at the end: 'Whatever the Witness says, maybe don't trust it (which implies that the Witness wrote Unveiling which was pretty obvious imo as It was trying to sway us to Its side during the time of SK through BL) aswell as the majority of things being metaphorical which isnt really a retcon but some people were upset by this as it was confriming the book that was detailing the beginning of the universe/everything was metaphorical instead of 100% fact, we know the Traveler is the Gardener & that the Witness's people were the ones to give it that name, but the Veil hasnt directly been called "the Winnower" like the Traveler/Gardener was, its kind of implied that the Witness is "the Winnower" as Its people craved a Winnower then when they merged Ahsa said "they merged into the salvation they craved, plus It (the Witness) went by the name "Winnower" as it was narrating Unveiling)
And plot twist the Winnower is real and is separate from the Witness which was quite the chilling revelation.

It’s obviously not the Veil as “Gardener” and “Winnower” both call to something taking some form of action (to garden, to winnow). The Veil just sits there and has seemingly not taken any active role in this entire story.
Yeah, people really do not seem to understand the Witness’ plan at all. It’s literally in the name Winnower. With the flower game, the board always ends up with the same predictable pattern in the end. The Gardener wants to create new patterns and so it attempts different starting positions, but those new positions always end up dying out in favor of the predictable ones. The Witness sees that, while the Traveler can create life, it’s power can also lead to unnecessary suffering for those that don’t fit the pattern. The witness intends to prevent that unnecessary life from being created, much like how a winnower separates the chaffe and pests from the necessary grain. By preventing that unnecessary life from being created, we’re left with the predictable pattern/final shape. Saying the veil must be the winnower when the Witness literally fulfills the role of an actual winnower makes no sense
I had fun with this season, I just wish I had people to play with. All my friends got completely turned off from the game by sunsetting and straight up removing old content from the game :\

One thing I really appreciate about Datto is that he feels like a breath of fresh air in a polluted environment. No matter what situation, he's always the voice of reason and clarity within the community, thinking more about the big picture rather than having kneejerk reactions to a lot of things (despite a part of this video being a hot take that I personally agree with).

Definitely one of the more objective voices when it comes to destiny 2. The game has A LOT of flaws but not everything is doom and gloom. There’s some stuff to be excited about tomorrow, and people who are excited shouldn’t be afraid to voice their opinions in a community that’s increasing with negative reception of this game (reasonably so).
So the Witness is the Gravemind from Halo, and now Zavala is being voiced by the Arbiter himself, Keith David. Some things never change.
As for the power levels bit: I don't mind that power isn't going up, because I am frankly sick of grinding pinnacle activities only to get 5 chest armor pieces. Badluck protection applies to armor stats, but not armor drops themselves.
But my biggest gripe is that the increased monetization for content makes it more feasible to pay for everything up front. Expansions, Seasons, and now Dungeons. Hard not to be cynical when you have to tell your friend they can't play content with you without paying up, and it could all go away at the end of the content year.
Were it so easy.
This season got so much right, Deep Dives and GOTD were both aesthetically amazing experiences. The lack of level grind definitely left a lot of downtime which made stretches feel particularly empty. However I played more this season than at any point in the past year.
Wish the loot was a liiitle better as well but other than that, it was a pretty solid season. I really like the deep dive concept and I hope season 22 brings us another unique activity. They also mentioned that the seasonal structure is changing from here on out so I’m cautiously optimistic about these last two seasons of the lightfall era 🙏

You're one of the few. This was overall one of the least played seasons in YEARS. Even big content creators were saying on twitter stuff like "oh man last week of the season in d2 i guess i have to go grind those season pass ranks before its finished". I got to rank 100 and stopped. In past seasons i've hit rank 240+ and usually end somewhere between rank 100-200... this time though i completed the season pass for the rewards and was DONE.

Idk where datto gets the “deep dives were a massive success” from…not too outlandish from a guy who likes the idea of battlegrounds replacing strikes. Pretty much datto at this point have said that “this is expected from Bungie, so it’s good”. Which translates to if Bungie does the bare minimum by doing the same shit they’ve been doing for 4 years now, that’s good content. To him, deep dives will always be good, but he will always criticize menagerie…
Something else to take into consideration is that this was the season where bungie showcased Marathon and most of the community felt as though profits from destiny were being funneled into ultimately another game. Regardless if it is true or not, community morale really dipped

Xivu arath carried season of the deep story. Her voice acting was amazing. Can't wait to see the hive gods reunite and see each other.
Arc Warlock felt amazing. Especially chain lightning or ionic trace builds. And most importantly the damage reduction mods from the artifact paired with the damage reduction fragment made it feel somewhat viable in higher difficulty stuff.
A lot of the negativity was from things outside of the season itself. That negativity still affects the game's reputation, but the season itself was good.
I kind of dislike how arc has little to no DR or Regen of its own without doing anything else exceptionally well. It looks like the point was that you move fast so you don't get hit but that only works on hunter
A seemingly small detail that actually has me excited for the future of D2 is a little thing they mentioned in a recent blog post. They mentioned they were adjusting their focus regarding seasonal content, wherin the first two seasons of each year are the direct fallout of the newly released expansion, while the other two seasons are focused on building towards the next expansion.

The big complaint is that we had the Unveiling lore book for so long that a lot of people accepted it as true. For a recontextualization to come, not in Lightfall, but a season was one of the big issues. The other half of that is that it was replaced by the same story that happened to the Fallen, but the Fallen didn't merge. We sacrifice knowing the creation of the Destiny universe that explains motivations for the Traveler, the Witness, the creation of the Vex, and more for The Fallen 2: Darkness Boogaloo.

The Fallen lost everything, the Witness literally found its purpose, and most importantly the Fallen wants the Traveler back (or they want revenge), the Witness doesn’t care about it anymore, it wants to go beyond the traveler. The Gardener is just an obstacle, an enemy to surpass. It’s nothing like the Fallen.
That’s like saying that the Hive and the Fallen have the same story. The Traveler is just at the center of basically everything in Destiny, but it was like this since the beginning…

I really love the underwater theming. Even when it came to the underwater traversal, I don’t think it was ever long enough for me to get bored. Even then dungeon underwater section. If you knew where to go it wasn’t any longer than something like the transition areas in prophecy, duality, or spire.
No matter what season came out in place of season of the deep people would’ve called it bad. People are burnt out and are taking it out on the season
For me personally, it was the mediocrity that did me in. Story? It's interesting but there are just so many things that feel unpolished. Story and quests? OK. Not great nor terrible. Game balance patches? Semi frequent but don't always make sense.
Destiny has just become too mediocre for me to keep playing with games like tears of the kingdom and Baldur's gate 3 out and with a new fromsoft game coming out soon. It's like being offered to choose between a free 60$ and a free 100$. There's no reason to take the 60.
That said, that's just me. I genuinely hope the game succeeds in the end because I love the world bungie has built.

I do agree that this season itself was okay, but I don’t think burnout was the reason. The state of the game is just horrible right now to the point where it drowns out everything else.
State of the game is ass and even when burnt out I'd be compelled to hop on to peruse dust store and shaders.
Completely uninstalled for Remnant, Baldurs Gate, and the game I've been waiting for for the past decade: Armored Core.

To answer the Ahsa question- it's revealed in the Siochain's Scuba Shell lore tab that she is of the same species that the Worm Gods were before being corrupted by the Darkness, so it's surmised that she knows from the knowledge bestowed upon the Worm Gods by the Darkness.
Diddy Kong Racing song in the background of the Ad section is phenomenal. You just became my favorite content creator because of this. That is literally all it took.

The lore retcon was the Traveler being the Gardener and the Witness, the Winnower. It was understood that the Gardener & the Winnower were something leagues above our petty fights in the universe. There's even a line from Savathûn from Season of the Lost where she tell us to stop caring about the line between Light & Dark and look up to what stands above us.
I got 0 treasure carriers in salvage. Was unlucky never saw them.

I am gonna look back at this season fondly, because I took a break from the game.
I feel like it would be a good idea to add Origin Traits to armor which scales with the number of armor pieces you have from that set. For example, the Spire Of The Watcher armor gives you a % increase to hip-fire precision.
That is an excellent idea!
Deep Dives and their pressure trials specifically were very fun. Optional difficulty increases that offer better rewards should be a continued practice in these seasonal activities going forward.
I do have to say, deep dive is probably my favourite seasonal activity ever. So much fun. I still haven't completed the whetstone encounter but I still have fun

I loved Deep Dives, despite the fact that matchmade blueberries never activated the hard mode. Roguelike buffs, underwater aesthetic, bigger challenges.

I share your opinion on season 21. In a vacuum, season of the deep was a fun season with some interesting content. Definitely above average.
But as you said Datto, the drama and the clash between Bungie and community kinda overshadowed all positive aspects.
We have a clanmate that lives for online drama, and he wasn´t one to be convinced that S21 was actually ok (maybe even good).
Because the drama was there and that was also his opinion.
Which is sad because this was a solid season and I for my part enjoyed it
Titan should have been an explorable location like the Leviathan was in Season of Haunted.

Personally I would like if bungie made a master mode for last wish with adpt weapons and armor as rewards. I liked the ghost of the deep dungeon a lot very fun finished it within the first day but master mode is crazy with the champs being spammed.
Craftable weapons are far more valuable than Adept

I really really hope that we get some kind of core Deep Dive mode in the game to. I think the Infinite Forest is an obvious place to do this kind of activity, but something like that that is procedural.
I think the critical factors for success are:
1. Infinite potential floors, with the clock being the only thing that forces you to the end.
2. More diverse modifiers. The ones in Deep Dive are great, but I think things like the immune Darkblade Knight in the Halloween Infinite Forest would also be great additions.
3. A mix of advancement sections, as well as objective defense. Deep Dive having only the latter got a little old after a while.
4. Some sort of worthwhile loot to chase to give me a reason to push further and deeper.
I think if we could get that, this would really shake up the PVE scene in a really positive way.
I wish they would have brought Savathun's Song back as a strike right at the end.
The problem D2 has always had since Y1 is that you can't really just log in and PLAY the game. You need to do one of the prescribed list of bungie activities or go and fill out the checklist. Which makes the act of logging in feel like you're just logging in to do chores. Sometimes the chores are fun and other times they're something you dread.
That’s entirely a psychological problem. Don’t get broken by the fomo, go replay a campaign mission or screw around in patrol or just take a break, no one is stopping you. Though to be fair there are plenty of incentives that make it feel otherwise

I stopped playing about 2 weeks into this season and I couldn’t be happier.
Overall I’d put this at 6/10.
Seasonal activity is slow and too enemy sparse
Deep dives are cool but not fleshed out enough
Exotic quest is really cool but the exotic is the most mid exotic we’ve gotten since Manticore
GOTD in my honest opinion is one of the worst dungeons. Everything in it is a slog. Boss health is way, way too high and the final boss mechanics are far too bloated for how much health she has. The platform one between encounters overstays it’s welcome. The weapons are kinda meh too with the exception of the stasis wave frame. I’m only going to play the dungeon until I get the exotic and then I’ll probably never touch it again.

A lot of people have been acting like this season has been the worst yet. But in terms of content this has been the freshest in the last TWO YEARS: deep dives, artifact changes, and fishing are all stuff that don't really have a parallel in previous seasons and this season was already half done when they made these changes for those who don't remember the "we know the seasonal model is tired" community post.
The bar wasn't that high and they still failed to clear it for most people. Fresh or not this season was very unfun for many, examples being deep dives needed sentient teammates that know the hidden bonus mechanic which ruined random matchmaking and fishing being literally one button, wait, one button. Throw on the gliches and the general state of the game.... How is this not one of the worst if not the worst season yet?
deep dives are this seasons only strength imo, hard to just say its "fresh" just bc there wasnt an afk farm like fishing a year ago. salvage and this seasons story have to be one of, if not the most, bland and cookie cutter that we've seen yet imo

Finally my opinion on Season 21 has arrived
that is the best simple explanation of the witness/ traveler/ veil I've heard. its very straight to the point, but when you say it like that it sounds like such a dull story I've invested in for the last 9 years haha
I’ve been doing deep dives this whole season (I’m a solo player) trying to get to tier 7 with ransoms and was unsuccessful until two days ago. I got two other random titan players so we had three titans. We ripped through and got tier 7! It was my first time getting tier 7 and I also got the catalyst for wicked implement which I got previously with a three man group. There needs to be a way to quickly communicate with ransoms so that you’re all on the same page without typing and without sending friend requests.
Outside of all the exaggerated hate…best dungeon, above average seasonal activity, great narrative, loved the underwater aesthetic and fishing for exotic farming is very useful. People need to go take a break…it’s like children who need a nap and don’t realize it. Easily better than every season last year. Thanks Datto!

The retcon is literally in the same season, Maya going crazy and creating a Lakshmi communion, because of the the veil, does not make sense if you look at what happened to the witness.
The witness clearly wasn't influenced by the veil, nor has the neomuni, nor Sathona, Nezarec, or anyone others aside from, Calus/the communion, and Lakshmi.
Some good stuff in the season but the seasonal story wasn't one of those things. Hoping next season is a banger since this one felt more like a season of the Hunt.

The game itself, when playable, is better than its been. So thats why you look at the what the delivered content was in a vacuum, not with every little live service error that happened.

I have to say, I'm so glad that I committed to a hiatus from D2 a month before this season. Just for the drastic increase in free time I noticed I had on average.
That hiatus did come with me missing the game, but on one occasion I went and played the season intro mission. I realized what I was missing wasn't something Bungie could provide, so I closed the game after completing the mission and continued on.
Watching Datto's videos about the state of things and how the season turnout had the community all up in arms. I seriously got tired of the community itself, and thats what drove me away from the game.
I truly hope I come to regret not being apart of season 21 while it was new.
Inb4 watching the video to know what my opinion should be: This season sucked. A lot of story and character potential that was not capitalized on. Salvage and Deep Dives were terrible even if Deep Dives were dipping their toes into some interesting design spaces. This half a year of Destiny has not been it and hopefully we can see a pivot soon. Given that SoTG, though, I won't hold my breath.
the "retconned" lore is about the gardner and winnower the flower game and the first knife. Which ive always viewed as a creation myth rather than actual lore. Something to try to explain why things are the way they are and to give a purpose to a god like machine that doesnt directly talk to people nor said its actual purpose or reasoning.
With the Witness being its own winnower it just shows that the lore in question is just its view on the traveler

Its hard to make a game feel full enough for the hardcore players that ONLY play destiny, and the players that only have a few hours a week to play (not letting them feel like they can't keep up or missing too much content or loot)

What makes the veil containment quest even more overlooked for most people is that you need to do the post campaign exotic quest that has you do a bunch of tedious busywork for an underwhelming machine gun. Then when u get the quest you have to go to 3 different areas to take out groups of tanky vex and then you get the mission which at first is just the second half of the last mission but with a tormentor instead of calus.
Summary of SOD: Disappointment
I’ve really enjoyed this season tbh. The deep dives were great fun, if not occasionally frustrating with blueberries. The story made serious progress despite the poor technical implementation. The dungeon armour set was fire. The new GM was challenging to platinum the first couple of tries (mainly due to the tedious middle section) but I’ve gotten my value for money for sure
This is the first season in a long time that I didn't even finish the season pass, nor get a buttload of Bright Dust from challenges
