You have to appreciate the political astuteness of Okomfo Anokye and Osei Tutu 300+ years back. Rallying superstitious people symbolically around a mortal human with limited life expectancy would have not worked and may have fallen apart at the symbol's demise.
Something as everlasting as this symbol, covered in gold which keeps it's lustre always, was intelligence and genius far beyond what is comprehended today.
