JUDY GARLAND: 'MEET ME IN ST LOUIS, LOUIS' WITH LUCILLE BREMER. A CLOSEUP.

- This is a High Quality, Close Up. 'Meet Me In St Louis' is a story musical during the summer and winter of 1903 when the mundane city of St. Louis, Mo. prepared for a huge World's Fair commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, which filled every citizen of St.Louis with a sense of progress and love for the city.
Think for a moment about the world of 1904. The Wright Brothers' famous flight at Kitty Hawk occurred the previous year. Gasoline-powered automobiles, motion pictures, and the "wonder drug" aspirin were introduced to the public only 10 years before. Electric lighting and telephones were less than 25 years old, and still a novelty only read about by most Americans. Food was stored in ice boxes, and the horse-drawn ice wagon was a familiar site. But from Opening Day - April 30, 1904 - to the closing ceremonies on December 1st of that same year, the St. Louis World's Fair played host to nearly 20 million visitors, who witnessed the public debut of air conditioning, were able to ice skate throughout the entire summer, and spoke by wireless telegraph to cities 1500 mile away. In addition, they could "see the world": from the Tyrolean Alps to the jungles of the Philippines; from the gardens of Japan to the holy sites of Jerusalem; from Southwestern pueblos to Eskimo villages. And all within the 1240 acres of the fair.
The site was designed by George Kessler, & was located at the present-day grounds of Forest Park and on the campus of Washington University, and was the largest fair to date.
A number of foods are claimed to have been invented at the fair. The most popular is that the waffle-style ice cream cone was made and first sold. Other claims include the hamburger and hot dog, peanut butter, iced tea, Dr Pepper, Puffed Wheat cereal and cotton candy.
Words by Andrew B. Sterling, music by Kerry Mills, 1904
Performed by Judy Garland and Lucille Bremer in the film 'Meet Me in St Louis', 1944
Now Louis came home to the flat,
He hung up his coat and his hat,
He gazed all around, but no wifey he found,
So he said "Where can Flossie be at?"
A note on the table he spied,
He read it just once, then he cried.
It ran, "Louis, dear, it's too slow for me here,
So I think I will go for a ride.
Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don't tell me the lights are shining
Any place but there,
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie;
Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair."
The dresses that hung in the hall,
Were gone, she had taken them all,
She took all his rings and the rest of his things;
The picture he missed from the wall.
"What! Moving!" the janitor said,
"Your rent is paid three months ahead!"
"What good is the flat?" said poor Louis, "Read that."
And the janitor smiled as he read.
Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair,
Don't tell me the lights are shining
Any place but there,
We will dance the Hoochee Koochee,
I will be your tootsie wootsie;
Meet me in St. Louis, Louis,
Meet me at the fair.

How could anyone resist singing to this? Such a classic movie.
There will never be another like Judy Garland. She was just amazing.
judy garland was so beautiful.
You can say that again!
Wow lucille bremer and judy garland sing so beautiful and they are so beautiful too
Judy Garland Is So Pretty ♥
Isn't that the truth
Judy Garland is absolutely gorgeous
My God both Judy and Lucille way too gorgeous and Divine for all words
To me, the house is one of the biggest stars of this movie!
Yeah, sadly it was been demolished in 1970😞
I think that’s kind of the point, since they almost leave it.
Here, here! Really love that grand old Victorian. Oh and Margaret O’Brien absolutely steals her scenes, the funniest little actress.
The house was so beautiful. It looked like almost every square inch of the rooms had a decorative item on it. A nice detail was towards the end where we see the faded outlines of where the paintings along the staircase used to be.
The perfect feel-good picture
Judy looks so much like Disneys Cinderella in this movie
She most definitely did. And every bit as lovely, fair, charming, gorgeous and beautiful as Cinderella as well
@@michaelmorris1804 ABSOTUTLLY!!!
Similar voice range too
It's sad that she didn't see herself as beautiful.
She was indeed unbelievably and Beyond Beautiful, divine, gorgeous and lovely and grand both inside and outside.
This movie was actually the first time she felt that was beautiful.
I sing this and even do those silly dance steps, just to annoy my son! it works everytime, he says will need therapy for years!! 😂
Only because she listened to what everyone else said… sometimes things don’t change in the industry :(
She wasn't ugly
Judy Garland was the most beautiful thing my eyes have seen on a movie screen. Her smile could light up the darkest night and oh those eyes...
What a beautiful film with such beautiful stars. Judy of course remains the uppermost.
I wish I was born in these times :'(
Same I wish we could been born then
Me too!
Y'all I believe there was a war going on in this time. So no you don't
Judy is definitely one of the greatest actresses &singers i mean she’s so beautiful and her voice and act is totally breathtaking god bless her soul 🖤
Outstanding historical Hollywood archive ever no words, incredible soundtrack. Merci beaucoup from Paris France 👍.
My inner musician is furious that this song doesn't resolve at the end.
Is it on the LP?
I know what you mean. Kind of like Ding Dong the Witch is Dead not resolving in Oz.
This film is amazing! :)
My Grandmother use to sing this to me when I was a kid. My Grandmother was born in 1920 a little over a hundred years ago. A redhead just like Judy. I will always cherish that memory and many more of her.
The film quality in the movie was pretty amazing compared to movies of it's time. The plot, music, and acting in this movie are excellent
Judy Garland is stunning in this movie ❤ if you havent seen the entire movie check it out, it is a fun movie. Great cast and fun story. Love it
I love that movie!! What a talent!
This is a great movie ! It has everything good story great music & singing :) The entire cast did a magnificent job !
I'm 14 and this is my all time favourite film as all my memories of my grandma are watching this at her house and her humming this tune and dancing around the kitchen! Thank you very much for this video! x
How r u Hannah your 26 now
Still your favorite film?
@@thibedeprins3035 she probably realize how bad st louis has become actually and give up.
my favorite part of the movie I love to sing too !!!#💓 and I love Judy Garland !!!!!#💓 💜 💓 💞 💝 💘
Love this song so much🎼🎹 Judy Garland has a WONDERFUL SINGING VOICE❤️❤️❤️
Such a charming delightful movie.
The lady playing the piano reminds me of the mother in Carrie 😮
Pls bring this era back today, i want it more than everything, genre today really sucks
Judy Garland is so beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤😊
We watch this movie every Christmas Eve, it's a delight...and (for any WDW fans out there) reminds us of The Carousel of Progress 😄
Love this film.thanks
This always reminds me of my Tootsie-wootsie. Shes my everything. My conversationalist, my friend, my love, my sunshine, my better half, my happiness, my girl, but most importantly, my wife. My love only grows stronger and stronger for you everyday. And I thank God that we crossed paths. Everything is possible when you put God first!
It's hard to believe that Judy wasn't a fan of Lucille Bremer as they have such great sisterly chemistry.
I love Judy Garland. She is so pretty here and full of life dancing and singing with her amazingly talented voice.
The dad seemed like a bit of a buzzkill wanting to break up the singing, but that was just something that went along with the story, since I've seen the film before
Oh, give the poor man some credit. That song would be the last thing you want to hear if you were a lawyer that lost a case and cost you some earnings especially if on your way home you hear that playing over and over again.
I feel that way about Alicia Keys' song "No one" when the radio station play that ever day every minute over and over again.
I am so lucky to be related to Judy Garland, Liza, Lorna and Joe (I only found out nearly 2 weeks ago). She was so beautiful, but she was not tragic as everyone says she was. She loved performing to audiences and doing everything that she did, and she also loved her children. Yes the pills that MGM sutdio doctor gave her were taking her life very slowly, but they didn't know that during those times. They never knew about addiction. I love her as a fan and as her family. R.I.P dearest Judy x
Her mom was giving her pills to
Lovely caring tribute
@@bearsist Following the studio doctor's orders, yes.
@Emin What is?
@Emin What the f are you talking about? Be honest with what?
My favorite feel good movie--I want to go to St. Louis!! The city better have saved the house at 1535 Kensington Ave. Thanks Judy--
LOVE this movie!
53 years ago today the world lost the beautiful Judy Garland❤️❤️ R.I.P Judy💖
This one of my favorite movies, period. I often wonder why Lucille Bremer didn't have a bigger, longer-lasting career than she did: she was certainly beautiful, an excellent dancer, and an adequate actress. I guess she lacked that indefinable "something" that would have given her the necessary boost up. Thanks, Michell, for posting this.
St Louis would have been beautiful if only they left it as it was. We dind't build these Fairs, but we sure as hell knocked them down.
Happy 101th birthday Judy Garland❤️🎉
Happy 100th birthday Judy Garland🎉
He should not have stopped them. They were diing a great job singing it.
One of Garland‘s best performances! During the filming of Meet Me in St. Louis, Garland and Minnelli had an initial falling out, but they soon started a relationship and married on June 15, 1945.
Liza arrived in 1946!
I am only 16, but I love this movie! :)
Such a great movie one of my favorites ❤
como adoro su voz ❤
I love that Judy uses her beautiful--and seldom shown--head voice in this song!
I've had this song stuck in my head for days. I don't think watching it has remedied it. It's probably made it worse. lol :) Thanks for posting.
I love this song
54 years ago the world lost Judy Garland❤️❤️
R.I.P. Judy Garland
June 10th 1922 - June 22nd 1969
doesn’t this song just give you absolute euphoria??
I love this scene! So charming and funny ❤️
Such a wonderfull singer
That girl playing the piano she was so good at that I wish I was good at playing the piano
the movie is based on a true story as told by Tudy played by Margret OBrien in the film.
Hahaha what!!
I absolutely love the descant part
Lol this makes me wanna dance along with Judy ❤
alwys the best MS Garland my first record(LP)
Oh man I used to sing this as a kid in chorus!
And Have yourself a merry little Christmas
I love how the sisterly bond has been shown in this movie
Now I know where Disney's Cinderella got the inspiration for her appearance
@Montie246 it is great that somebody else that is in their teens likes this movie, I loved this movie when I saw it for the first time when i was 13 and now I am 28 years old and still love this, I am hoping to interduce it to my children when they get old enough to understand the greatness of the older movies=)
I believe Elvis Presley told her that she was the Greatest Entertainer in the World. I also read that Judy Garland had attempted to lure Presley into one of her later films but the Colonel was against it.
Actually, Presley (like anyone born & raised in the 40s & 50s) respected a beloved entertainer like Garland and told her he was a big fan when their respective limos happened to cross paths in the mid-1960s and they shared a few words. A few years earlier, Garland had planned to book Presley on her CBS TV series, but CBS would not pay Elvis’s $50,000 appearance fee (thanks to Col Parker). It’s a shame-would have been historic to have two of the biggest stars of the 20th Century singing/appearing together.
FUN FACT: When Judy’s Grammy-winning 1961 album ‘Judy at Carnegie Hall’ hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts for an unprecedented 13-week reign at the top spot, the album she knocked from the No. 1 perch was Elvis’s ‘Blue Hawaii’. They were probably the two most charismatic live performers of the 20th Century-and beyond. Who could take their eyes off either of them when they were commanding a stage?
"We will dance the hoochie koochie, I will be your tootsie wootsie."
Hi guys! This video is awesome..the voices are letter perfect, how did you do it?? Looking for more of Judy and Liza..congratulations on a job well done! Brad from NC
if the movie was about a St. Louis that never was, and a family that never was, I don't care--it still makes me feel really good about life. 'mission accomplished'
The movie does take place during 1903-1904, the year the worlds fair came to STL was 1904. Though the family is fictional, it's still a great feel good movie.
+agrondinsmith85 Actually the family did exist the main difference between reality and the movie is that they actually moved to New York; they never stayed in St. Louis.
Oh yes, there was a Smith family, and there was as a Tootie! She wrote about herself and her family during the early 1900s and she was quite fond of the fact that the World's Fair was going to take place in her hometown of St. Louis. Here's the Wikipedia link to her real-life story. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Benson
@halkyron no, rose, her sister is played by lucille bremer. the good witch in the wizard of oz, glinda, is played by billie burke. i'm a HUGE fan of judy garland, particularly the wizard of oz. my family is from the same town that judy was born in. i named my puppy billie after glinda. :)
I'm going to be singing this song myself as I walk to Six Flags St Louis.
I love six flags Saint Louis!
VeggieTales brought me here 😹
@TinaB1990 Aww! I keep seeing the little clips like some of the songs she sings but I REALLY wanted to see ALL of it, and I can't find it at the library either! I guess i'll look at the library again though, because it has been a pretty long time...lolrofl
is it me or does judy have a great high register? :D
Well, I did have a little boy crush on her when she was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.
I will sing this at my christmas program
I was amazed when i saw this movie, amazing quality, looks like it was made 10 years ago, not 1944!
true. But I just sang the end out LOUD! and it worked!
estoy aqui por larry 💙💚💙💚 es tan real
Stupenda!! :)
My aunt got free tickets to disneyland by Judy's grandson or someone who was related to her that was a male. It was like 10 free tickets. I wish I knew exactly who he was tho :o
BBC1 Or BBC2 Aired This Film A Few Times
i love the veggie tales version of this xD
🥴
@meinnameistbach Meet Me in St. Louis was written in 1904 to coincide with the St. Louis World's Fair. It was just repeated in this movie.
I’ve never heard Judy do head voice before
i want the theatre guild to do this one :) and I want to play Esther :)
btw is is Hester or Esther? I couldn't tell in the movie ...
@TVBProductions Judy Garland is amazing... but so is Lucille Bremer :-D . Rose is one of my favorite characters. "Do that little thing."
...Andy Bernard concurs!
Did the creator delete the playlist? There was a playlist that had the whole movie, with this song, but i cant find it
i tape recorded my grandpa drunkenly singing this as a kid, i never knew what it was from
Lots of comments about Judy (understandable) but Rose's actor is very talented too and gets no credit!
@kipperkippy You can find it in parts on youtube if you just type in "Meet Me in St. Louis Part 1", etc.
@pianoluvr100 It's strange; I know that I watched it on youtube over the summer..but now I can't find it either. I guess they must've taken it down or something. Sorry :(.
I had to sing and dance to this song while wearing a top hat and using a cane in 5th grade.
@TinaB1990 I did this and I STILL can't find it can anyone upload a video response with part 1? :/
I know it's a little late to be posting this I just been listening to this song another looks like San Francisco open your Golden Gate Frank's Frank Sinatra singing New York New York let's take pride in our cities again in our country good people out there telling you where the worst places to live instead of him trying to make it better but just making things worse I'm proud of to be an American I'm proud of our cities or country we have the greatest cities in the world Alicia protect it and garlic safe from outside influences so today I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving
I can't hear this without thinking about 2 gourds that save a ship by eating a popcorn ball meteor.
Thumbs up if VeggieTales brought you here.
Didn’t bring me here, but veggie tales is awesome 👏
@@NotAfraid280 nice
before i googled the song, i legit thought that veggietales made it lol
@@elito7023 same here
i live in st louis
Lucille Bremer deserved a huge career. I liked her more than Judy in this film.
Are we sure that Judy wasn’t a mezzo soprano because my god that high register is gorgeous I wish they had let her use it more
