  • We get tons of questions from people who want to sound like a string section or an orchestra all by themselves. In the past, we've talked about doublers, chorus pedals, harmonizers, delay, and reverb.
    Now there are TWO pedals that do a much better job - and they're basically plug and play.
    Here's our review of the Zoom A1X Orchestra Sound and the Electro-Harmonix S9 Orchestral setting.
    One single electric violin can sound like a whole lot more.

    Thank you SO much. I've been dying for anyone, anywhere to play something other than a guitar through any of the EHX 9 series. So cool!!!

    That’s really helpful and interesting. Thank you so much for uploading this. Can you show us how the Electro-Harmonix S9 sounds like in the lower two strings of an electric cello?

    I recently bought the Zoom A1X, as I play the cello and I like it. It works really well with my silent electric cello, but not so much with the acoustic ones. One of my acoustic cellos has a Fisher pick up on it and I heard more of the whooshing of the bow on the strings that really annoyed me. The other one I tried with the condenser mic and I had a bit of feedback, I will try it with a different mic eventually, as I have several.

    Thanks for the great info. I currently have the Mel 9 pedal which has orchestra, cello, and strings. I use use it with my violin to get a string section kind of sound. I was wondering if you have tried it and would consider the S9 better than the Mel 9? One thing that I found I do not like about the Mel 9 is its over the top modulation/vibrato sound. I tame it as much as I can with delay and reverb. Does the S9 have a lot of modulation/ vibrato as well? Thanks again for the great content.

      I took it out this weekend on a gig. I really like the overall sound but there are a few things I didn't really dig. It takes away quite a bit of your right hand control. I tried to put it in front of an autowah at one point and I had basically no control over the autowah.

    Great video! Almost about to pull the trigger for the S9... How well is the volume tracking when it comes to sustained swells, given it was designed with the attack of a guitar in mind?

    • @ElectricViolinShop
      @ElectricViolinShop  Před rokem +2

      It depends. You can blend in your dry sound, too, which is going to help a lot. It tracks the beginning of notes really well. It can get a little sustain-y if you're not careful with how you set it, though. Be sure to choke your notes out when you want them to end.

    • @ElectricViolinShop
      @ElectricViolinShop  Před rokem +1

      There are a number of blocks you might want to experiment with. I'd look at some octave shifts, both up and down. I'd look at the Double Take block. I'd also look at some reverb and delay. I have not been able to get the exact sound I want with just the Helix. But you might have better luck than me - or be listening for something different.

    Is the A1X effect an effect or a preset? I got the impression from the limited Pickup Test review that it was just a preset combo of other effects, so you could remove the slap-back. But they didn't cover it exhaustively, so I may be missing something.

    • @ElectricViolinShop
      @ElectricViolinShop  Před rokem +1

      That's exactly right. The A1X sound is a preset. I haven't gone under the hood of the sound (and most of our customers don't - they pretty much want plug and play sounds). I'm sure you could disable the slap back, but it would definitely change the effectiveness of the preset.

    • @matthew.wilson
      @matthew.wilson Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the clarification :) If they're getting such a good result from a chain of regular effects that gives me hope for finally getting a better result from my Stomp one day 😅

      It's a piece of leather. It's to kill the schinnnng you can get from the after length of the strings when using heavy distortion.

    Cool instrument... what is it?

  • @matthew.wilson
    @matthew.wilson Před rokem

    Despite the quality of the synth on the S9, it sounded like the A1X was a bit more responsive to your articulation. Seems like that's always the compromise with sounding like an ensemble though - the more articulation you let through, the more individual and less "ensemble" it sounds 🤔. Conversely a heavy mix of plateau reverb on the Helix sounds nice and orchestral as long as you're happy only ever to play long swells 😅

    • @ElectricViolinShop
      @ElectricViolinShop  Před rokem +1

      That's a pretty fair assessment of the two. The S9 sounds more like an orchestra that you'd hear in the background of a pop or rock tune (which is pretty much how I use that sound) and the A1X is a little more clear.
      I do like the plateau reverb, but there's a thickness and an "ensemble-ness" that the S9 adds that you can't get from the reverb.

    • @matthew.wilson
      @matthew.wilson Před rokem

      The plateau reverb was just an extreme example of what kind of thing can approach an orchestral sound. The S9 definitely sounds better, I totally agree 👍

    If you were to either, record an orchestra, or layer up string tracks in a daw and output them to an Impulse response file, and load them in to something like the TC or sonic cake IR loader pedals, would that give your an orchestral sound when playing the electric violin through it?
