Take a look into the trucks Tatra - diesel engines V10, air cooled, chassis on INDEPENDENT suspension - all the axels- 3 or 4 axles instead of Springs - TORSIONAL springs... That's the only one truck EVER made like that... Beside, the green car is the East German plastic car - TRABANT - two stroke, two cylinders petrol engine 597 cm³... MY FAVORITE ever car...
In '60s our trucks, Chevrolet and Dodge with 6 cylinder petrol engine were started, first pumping petrolyo fill carb chember, then handle start. . They can ise starter in rest of daynot cold start.
They made them this way because the design was more efficient of cooling the engine. The designers tried different designs, but landed on the hemispherical chambers in the final design.

How does this engine cool efficiently without cooling fins around the heads and block. Maybe I just can't see them.
They're all inside a shroud, which directs the air from the two fans low on each side.

There are cooling fins around the heads. There are two turbines (fans) that suck fresh air in over the engine and out the back of the car.

Had a straight 6 diesel with crankshaft broken across centre main once .. sounded just like that .. surely this motor has a problem?

This engine is way more special than a small block chevy! You really need to check out the Tatra 603 B5 launching.
