The largest / longest single road level crossing in the UK, measuring 70 metres (230ft) with 6 tracks! Crossing controlled from signal box (located in the middle of the level crossing) and sees trains running on the East Coast Main Line.
Thanks For Watching!
That’s amazing, never seen one like that 😮
Yeah, it's pretty cool 😉😉👍👍
We lived in Helpston when I was a lot younger and my Mum and Dad used to take me to the level crossing to watch the trains after school.
Ah cool. This is quite a cool crossing to watch trains at, lots of lines 😎
Only 6 tracks? I think that's not many (especially for UK). In Czech Republic we have 8-track crossing (Nymburk) and in Žilina, Slovakia, they have 11-track crossing (distance between two barriers are cca 90 meters). But both crossings are permanently closed. We have some 6-track crossings, too, but traffic only regularly runs on 2-4 tracks.
In America we have this one crossing (and only one that I know of) where there are 10 tracks, all of which are used regularly and there are no gates or barriers. Just lights as if there were gates the gates would never go up as it takes time for them to fall and rise. So if you were to just start crossing, and the lights begin flashing, and the train is on the furthest track away from you...there are 2 options... engineer applies emergency brake (hut they're only going like 5 mph so...) OR, you can just stop on the crossing until the train passes. As for the warning times for trains there (due to the huge amount of train traffic) is only about 3-5 seconds. And it can take 5-7 seconds for a car to completed cross. Notice how this is a problem? There is a video on it somewhere. I bet if you were to search up "10 track railroad crossing" it might just come up...
This is the longest road crossing in the country. There are other longer level crossings but they do not have warning lights, alarms or gates. This crossing is still open for traffic 😉😉
@Matthew Helgeson Here in America, the largest crossing that I'm aware of has 14 tracks.
Oh really? Are all 14 tracks still in use?
Yep. It goes through a BNSF yard in Wichita, KS:

Unusual but my worst nightmare!I don't like driving over them and certainly don't walk over them, and this one I would be terrified I wouldn't make it across in time
I have walked over the nearby Maxey crossing which is of similar length and it activated as I started crossing. The signaller was watching over CCTV and stopped the barriers lowering until I finished crossing. This Helpston crossing is also monitored by a signaller from a signal box so no vehicle or pedestrian could become trapped.
Vigin trains in wales to and always stop to prystatyn station, some level crossings in wales, steam trains in wales, they go every places. Diffrent class is there some of them in wales. Some of them are new steam railway 2008. Testing 22nd october 2010. This crossing got 6 tracks. I uplouded 42 of them I think, 1 sucgriber is there. Nice video Jamie. Almost new years day. Boxing day is today. 26 december 2018 today.😎👍👏😁
AGAIN A MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!
Great video
Thanks 😎
Amazing... i remember one time after church, we were waiting to cross Gillingham crossing but the gates were closed. Then 8 different trains came in that period it was closed. The scary thing was that there were only two tracks and they all came and went in less than two minutes!
Wow, nice. I've only seen 3 trains pass Gillingham LC in one closure.
Greetings from across the pond!
Nice video!
Thanks mate 👍👍
An elderly person probably couldn't make it on foot before the gates came down and would be trapped. Fortunately, there's a large enough safe area halfway across.
I don't think there is a safe area. This crossing is controlled from the signal box in the middle of the crossing so the signalman has full view of the crossing. If there is an slow pedestrian then the barriers can be stopped or the crossing can be activated once the pedestrian has finished crossing over.
Impressionnant !
Oui définitivement! 😀😀
Jamie I don't think that is the longest level crossing in the UK becouse remember red cow lane level crossing in summer set I'm pretty sure that's bigger
Before this vid, I measured Helpston, Maxey and Exeter crossings graphically on Google Maps. The result was: Helpston LC (230ft), Maxey LC (160ft) and Exeter LC (115ft) surprisingly. The fact the road at Helpston's crossing crosses all the tracks at an angle makes it far longer than you'd expect. Helpston, Maxey and Exeter are grouped as the longest crossings in the UK, Helpston being the longest 😁😁😁
UK Level Crossings Channel Ohh right Heh yeah that douse make sense lol Heh that's me tolled 😁😁
My intellectual knowledge of measurements overthrowed your understanding hehehehehehehe 😁😁😀😀
UK Level Crossings Channel 😂😂 haha yep you brain box
What about Maxey level crossing? That has six tracks and its bigger length for the road. Is that clear?
In terms of the distance, Helpston is a larger crossing, as it crosses the railways at more of an angle than Maxey. Both Helpston and Maxey have 6 tracks.
The largest public railroad crossing I've seen is 5 tracks long! But I have seen a sign for a 6-track crossing on private industry property!
Nice. Well this 6-track crossing called Helpston is the longest public road crossing in the UK 😄😄
Wow!
Ikr, that was my reaction when I saw it 😀😀
Awsome, did you get any video of it closing?
Thanks, and Yeah, next 4 uploads 😁😁
Good video Jamie
Thanks Ted 😁😁
I heard of a 13 track crossing somewhere in the US
Freebrickproductions has said in a comment, to his knowledge, the largest US crossing has 14 tracks.
Such wow
Indeed.
well that railroad crossing is AMAZING
Here in the US the longest railroad crossing has 14 tracks (I think)
Over double here then lol
Nice video UK level crossings channel 💟💟💟💟💟💟💟💟
Thanks.
Where are the closures?
Coming up in the next few videos mate 👍. This is just a 'tour / showcase' vid I made 😁😁
The only MCB left on the ECML!
Possibly. I think the rest are CCTV controlled 🤔
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel I was wrong at that time. Carlton-On-Trent and Claypole are MCB's as well.
How come this never got a Guinness world record?
Well it's not something that could be a world record. There's loads of level crossings elsewhere in the world which are far longer than this one (at least 15 tracks in the US).
Actually, AFAIK, the largest here in the US has 14 tracks.
Ah right. I knew it was something around that number 🙂🙂
And for anyone curious, here's the crossing in question:

Is Maxey the 2nd longest level crossing in the uk
Yeah, I think so
UK Level Crossings Channel I think maxey has more tracks
No, same number of tracks I think
UK Level Crossings Channel actaully maxey lc is the same size and has 4 tracks
Maxey IS smaller than Helpston in terms of distance from one side to the other
