Glock 19 VS. Glock 23 (GEN 5s)

  • Both of these are Generation 5. They are "ALMOST" the same size. The G23 Gen 5 has a slightly wider slide than previous generations and is NO LONGER the same exact size as a G19. Therefore, it will likely NOT fit in holsters for G19s and previous generation G23s.
    The G19 (15 round mags) gives you two extra rounds. The G23 (13 round mags) gives you the more powerful .40 caliber round. That is the deal. "But, Hill-Billy, newer 9mm are just as powerful as the 40 S&W." Sorry, but they aren't even close. "But, Hill-Billy, the FBI says so." Well, then the FBI person doesn't understand physics. The 40 S&W has a larger diameter, the bullets have a lot more mass, and they are going approximately the same speed as the 9mm. The energy difference and size of the hole each makes is significant. What you get with the G19 is two more shots. Recoil between the two weapons is not noticeable. Some people claim the 40 in general has significantly more recoil than a 9mm. And this may be the case in smaller weapons. Recoil isn't just about the round. Recoil has other factors like the size and weight of the weapon being used. Anyway, thanks for watching!

    Good shooting there! I carried .40 my entire LE career and it was fine. The gen 5 Glock 22 and 23 are thicker in the slide and they use a 20lb recoil spring compared to the 18lb previously used, which really makes the comparison hard to tell. The gen 5 .40’s are smooth shooters. Pop some solid sights on em and they are good to go. I agree with the “buy both” comment. I like 9, but I still love .40 (and .45). That argument they alway say, of “modern technology has made the 9mm better than it used to be..” is a silly argument because that same technology has been used in the .40 and .45.
    We did testing in/around vehicles with the 9 and the .40 at my agency and .40 performed better by a decent margin.
    Solid video here guy, thanks!

    Looks like you have less muzzle flip with the 40. I even watched both again in slowmotion to be sure but even slowmo confirmed it that you have less muzzle flip with the 40. Maybe that has something to do with the 23 gen 5 having a thicker heavier slide than the 19.

      It is. I just compared a Gen 4 Glock 22 to the Gen 5 Glock 23. The slide is wider on the 23 without a doubt. The 23 will not fit in the 22 holster. It is too wide. And the 22 slides in the 23 holster and won't lock in because it is slimmer. Thanks for watching.

      I have two G19’s and bought a Gen 5 G23 a few months ago. I can’t tell any difference in recoil, which I don’t pay attention to recoil anyway. I would like to buy a Gen 5 G22 because the longer grips seem to fit my hand a little better. I’m currently a law enforcement officer and prior military and I carry the G45 9mm everyday for duty. I do like the bigger bullet though. They tell everyone that the 9mm bullet technology has improved so much and is now equal or better than the 40 or 45. What they don’t tell you is this same “new” ammo is also made for the 40 and 45.

    I have been shooting both for over 30 years. For last couple of years I have been sort of moving away from 40. I have an undisclosed amount of 40 ammo is been the only reason I kept my M22. I want a Gen 5- 19 or 23. Depends on what’s available. If store has both, I’m going with the 23. If it has only a 19, I’m going that direction. I enjoyed the video well enough, but disagree with a lot of your points. Older I get arthritis in hands would Lean me to a softer shooting caliber. To say a 40 is way more powerful today wouldn’t necessarily be fact. Years gone by it absolute was. A +P 9mm comes very close to a 40 caliber. There are multiples reasons why LE agencies are switching to the 9mm. For years was 40S&W was a great compromise. Today either 9mm, 40 cal or 45acp will serve you well.

    • @gvtrai58
      @gvtrai58  Před rokem +3

      Well, I understand the getting older! And I agree both are fine and would likely get the job done! To me LE agencies switched back because a lot of the people they are hiring now-a-days need a little reduction in recoil to qualify! They can't say one of the biggest factors of switching back!

      @@gvtrai58 I worked for a fed agency and we had 22’s. Many of us hoped for a transition to the 17. I will say the dual recoil springs help on the recoil a lot!! I remember shooting them in mid nineties and recoil was a good bit more stout. For a off reason I want a 23 more so than a 19. Probably because I had a Gen 3 23 and I put a shit ton of rounds through. One of my favorite firearms I ever owned and sold it. A sheriff office I worked at early 2000’s we carried the 23.

    If you like 9mm thats fine, but im sick of people saying its just as powerful, and regurgitating other bs they read on line. In no way will a 124 grain 9mm come close to a 165 grain. 40. The police departments are swapping to 9mm bc as a whole they get better scores with them. Most officers arent shooters and i guess the little bit of recoil makes a difference to a person of small stature, or has weak hands.

If by powerful, one means muzzle energy, that will depend on the bullets you buy. Some 40's will have more energy, some 45's have more energy. But, the 45 bullet is always going to have the diameter and mass (weight) advantage. The 40 S&W was designed to be a round in between the 9mm and 45acp.

      Energy wise, a .40 has more power. I think with its higher velocity, it will be more likely to expand with hp ammo. With a little practice, it's easy to shoot well, has good capacity, and most .40 pistols are easier to carry than .45 acp pistols.
