    The "Flight of Five" locks are and were an absolutely amazing feat of 19th century engineering. The 60 foot rise was initially a freakin' cliff that they had to blast through and figure out a way to raise the boats from bottom to top. What you can see today in Lockport is the 2nd iteration of the flight of five. At some point when technology improved they were able to covert part of it to a two lock system (2 instead of 5) that carries boat traffic in modern times -- but the flight of 5 (decommissioned) is still there for all to admire. In terms of Erie Canal history, this is as good as it gets!

Expecially, enjoyed the ending, I'm like no way glass milk bottles...takes me back to when I was little, mom would drop me off mid-milk route to my grandma (grandpa was a milkman, yes I was the milkman granddaughter) and got to ride in the milk truck, they stood to drive. That was his morning job, in the afternoons he ran his gravel truck business. Thank you for memory lane.

But you surprised me by your expert level of video making and I very much appreciate you showing us around parts of America I have never heard of, let alone will likely never see in person. I'm so glad you're in New York State, so much history and cool things to explore there. I'm originally from the Hudson Valley's Rhinebeck/Hyde Park area. There are quite a few historic buildings with beautiful architecture there. A real gem near Hudson, NY is Olana, the home of Hudson River School painter, Frederic Church. Olana is a gorgeous and unique structure. I thought I'd mention that in case you made your way to that area. I really enjoyed seeing the caves of Lockport and history of the town. Wonderful video. When you were talking about Canada and NY, I told my sister “OMG, my favorite CZcamsr is probably in this area”... very exciting since the 20th is one month in my van.
    So I’ve been looking for you..grew up in the Lockport area..small harbor town called Wilson that has a great history because during prohibition the town was one of the safest areas to get into with their bootleg. Check it out if you’re still in the area. Luv ya girl!

    About 10 years ago, during a visit to Niagara Falls, we took a side trip to Lockport and took a ride on the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal was something I learned about in school. This little side trip was an eye opener. The Erie Canal was built almost 100 years before the Panama Canal. It is 363 miles lohg and originally used 82 locks to raise the water almost 600 feet. The longest canal in the US at that time was 26 miles long. It was built, through wilderness, using nothing but primitive tools, animal power, and black powder, and completed in 8 years. When it opened, the cost shipping goods from the Midwest to the Atlantic dropped to 1/10 it's original cost. If you're ever in northwestern NY, I highly recommend it.

    • @PH_INFO_101
      @PH_INFO_101 Před 2 lety

      Question, Can anyone explain, how it is possible, the Panama Canal (48 miles long /10 years to build), built 87 years after the Erie Canal can have a construction rate of 4.8 miles per year while the Erie Canal has a construction rate of 45 miles per year. That is an 837.5% difference.

    • @lamplighter5545
      @lamplighter5545 Před 2 lety

      @@PH_INFO_101 -- Both were incredibly difficult, but the Panama Canal had to deal with Yellow Fever and Malaria, a rainy season and mud slides.
