- Bug forsakes the Hive and leaves it forever in favor of meeting the mysterious Pincer, a bug who lives outside the Hive, deep in his own hole in the ground. But who is Pincer? Friend or foe? Are his intentions as noble as they seem, or is Pincer about to put a twist into this plot? In any case, it's time to Kick It Up a Notch!

my thinking was that hom holding it up actually took some of the weight of his arms off his lungs (like when runners hold their arms over their head after a race to get more air in). I thought that would extend to singing too

Actually I think the weight is shared by someone behind him. the tail moves sometimes in a coordinated way and if you look closely enough, you can see flashes of a person behind Dylan. I still love this song tho.❤️

The puppets in this show are absolutely amazing. The people who made them did a wonderful job, and the actors did a great job manipulating them. :D I am extremely impressed with this show.

@@fivehundredlux OMG right?? That man is the definition of talented. Arguably my favorite of entire the Starkid crew, and his performance in this show is a HUGE reason for that.
IMO, his incredible performance in Twisted is the topmost reason (but I may have some bias because I was lucky enough to see it live). That angelic and absolutely heartbreaking voice, not to mention his acting and flawless comedic timing.
I just love watching the four actors manipulating Pincer - how they all move together to create such convincing body language! Even just Lauren and Nick as the claws match their own body language to what they're doing with the claw and it's incredible

To everyone commenting about how similar this is to Little Mermaid, that's because it's supposed to be! Darren Criss, who wrote the music and helped develop the story, refers to it as "The Little Mermaid" meets "Aliens."

Yes! We haven't had a girl main protagonist since Little White Lie. Otherwise there's been Harry, Joey, Bug, Batman, Jafar, and Jack Bauer. Not hating on any of the starkid, but a girl lead would be amazing! I think lauren could pull it off best, but i would love to see meredith as a lead sometime.

Gotta love the physical acting with the puppets. I could not stop laughing when they began discussing February. Pincer's claw's pulled up under his chin like that, and his tail curl, it is pure comedy gold.

I can't beleive the audience didnt cheer when Dylan walked out with that puppet. Its ASTOUNDING and deserves a round of applause imo 👏👏
I love how both villains in this play show off the worst parts of Bug's motives. Pincer leaves the hive not because it was oppressive towards him, but because he wanted to eat others and be more powerful than the others in the hive. Junior shows how only caring about yourself can completely corrupt a person.

I just realised that there are huge parallels between this scene and the one with Pincer and Junior in Act 2. The whole 'Oh that probably wouldn't work' 'It's stupid; if I tell you, you'll think I'm stupid, and then I'll be embarassed.' THIS IS MY THIRD TIME WATCHING AND I NEVER NOTICED THAT. Well done, writers (I think the Langs?).

Winter Elton Well, HMB was probably (semi) based off of the Batman v Superman comic (as the movie hadn't come out yet then), and MAMD is just a parody of real life (bc Joey plays his namesake)
Honestly I admire Dylan so much here because I've had to hold my arms up for 15 minutes straight before in shows and you feel like you're dying and I know how painful that must have gotten, especially with having to control pincer's mouth

I absolutely LOVE Pincer as a villain, but he's thinking too small. Why settle for one Starship of humans when he could hijack the ship, travel to where they came from and have a planet-full? Or let them settle on the planet so he can have a ready supply to devour?
C'mon, when you're kicking it up a notch, you might as well kick it aaaaall the way up to the stratosphere!
Good thinking...but you could kick it up on more notch still. How about if Pincer harvests a whole bunch more of those brain-leech spores, refines them into some kind of blue goo, and then forces it down the throats of all the humans in order to hijack *them*? He could wear a spore for himself, and then use the psychic link to overwhelm the humans' minds with irresistable song-and-dance impulses. Use the dominated humans to find and convert more humans. The only thing better than having easy access to huntable humans is having constant access to humans who will dance right into your mouth-parts on command! Success would be...inevitable.

the only thing that bothered me here was that dylan and lauren seemed to have forgotten their black hoodies lmao. and can we please bow down to dylan's vocals and the fact that he didnt one bit drop his arms. hell, my arms get tired just from putting my hair in a ponytail. smh
I mean, with Dylan it isn't so bad because he's often in shadow, but Lauren really sticks out
ok so I’m rewatching starship again as one does, but this time around i get stuck on this part at 6:27 because it sounds so familiar, and after some soul/CZcams searching it’s because the “all you gotta do is” part is almost exactly the same that Jaime sang in TGWDLM during “Join Us and Die”. My soul is finally free and if there’s any other freaks like me rushing to the comments looking for answers on this I’M HERE TO VALIDATE YOU!
Poor Unfortunate Souls is one of the catchiest, most well known villain songs in all of pop culture. Considering this, you’d expect it’s equivalent in any musical partially based on the Little Mermaid to be particularly vulnerable to audience disappointment. Needless to say, Kick It Up A Notch exceeds expectations.
Props to everyone who helps in playing pincer! I know that my arms would probably fall off if I had to hold that up for almost 10 minutes straight.

Before commenting, I always scroll through the comments "a reasonable distance" and if it's been said already, I shut up. I want to draw attention to the fact that Nick Lang and Lauren Lopez MADE PINCER RIGHT-HANDED! They actually put enough thought into the puppetry to work dominance into who made which claw gestures. Brilliant storytelling and teamwork! I'm not just talking about the handshake at the start, either, but all throughout - watch closely, and you'll see it's true: Lauren holds back and lets Nick shine. Well done, Starkid!
