Chainsaw motor on a go kart - no torque but lots of top end

- The "A La Carte" gets a chainsaw motor. I had no idea what would happen when I got on it, I didn't expect much because the motor was small. It has an oversized carb, a ported muffler and no governor so I knew it would rev high... if it moved at all.

Loved it bill laughed all way through it you looked s**t scared but looked fun thanks for this series
Thanks. I tried not to look terrified, but I was pretty sure I was gonna die when it wound all the way up . It is officially the fastest chainsaw in the shop. 🙂
"Once upon a time when men and chainsaws were steel". Love it!!! That was fun. Congrats on the success.
When I was editing, it just felt like that belonged there.
I figured you might be the only person that would catch the other one, "marine epoxy, good stuff," it's from the Blues Brothers. 🤣
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Right!!!
That is the coolest thing I have seen in a while. Rock on!
Thanks, even though it only lasted a few minutes, it lasted longer than I thought it would, and it was great fun! 😎
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I can tell you are having fun. Fun is contagious. Thank you for doing this and taking the time to video it and share it with us.
@haneyoakie14 It really is. I had fun making this one,. I am waiting for a bit of grief for my questionable welding skills, LOL
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I have never welded anything in my life, but I would like to learn.
@haneyoakie14 Do what o did, I went and got a helmet, give and a welder one day and filled with the helmet for an hour, then went to the junkyard and got some metal and started making a mess. It took a few tries, but I figured it out eventually. I joke about being the worst welder, but I haven't had anything come apart yet. (Knock on wood)
Thanks for the great video. I'm thinking about doing the same with bicycle
It took a little imagination to get the motor attached and a sprocket on it. A bicycle is a lot lighter, so it should work out pretty well. Let me know how it goes!
Me and the sawmill boys got into this deal about 4 thousand years ago while we were still in reform school together. Where the go-cart came from or what kind of saw motor we used I have no idea. Their dad, the logger/sawyer was running Homelites, a 700?, a 770 and a 990-D for a yard saw but i doubt it was one of them. Had mower tires to run on and a v-belt drive about 1 to 1 to the axle. I do remember it was after dark when we got it together and the 1st time we gassed it the tire came apart and flew through the air with the greatest of ease out of sight and the old shop being right by the highway, we were glad there was no traffic. That was the last of that deal till the logger/sawyer made the buggy out of the old walking tractor but that's for another time.
The v belt means it had a torque converter. I tried to run a small tweaked chainsaw motor on a light cart with a clutch, and it briefly worked before the motor came apart
@@GuysPlayingWithTools This was way before a converter. Just 2 pulleys.
@lewiemcneely9143 hard pulleys? Torque converters are just 2 pulleys with a v belt, and the one on the motor tightens as the rpm increases
@@GuysPlayingWithTools That's all, just 2 pulleys. That's why the mower tire slung itself apart. No snowmobiles here.
Sounds like quite a ride
White Castle t-shirt! Way back in the last century we ate at White Castle fairly regularly (teenagers). I can’t remember the last time I’ve been there and it’s possible I’ll never eat there again. Tastes change.
The go-cart project was fun to watch the end results. 👍🏽
They don't exist in Texas, but I am from Indiana, and we stop at one every time we go.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Michigan (Detroit area). We’ve got them all over the Metro Detroit area. 🍔
@@ronsamborski6230 ok, now you are just showing off. 🤣🤣
Very cool LOL 😂. It went faster than I thought. Good job brother. 🔧👍
Thanks, it didn't accelerate well, but once it got rolling, it did great.
I'm just amazed at how much power that little chainsaw had to push you and the cart. 👍
Right? I was thinking it might not move at all, but once it got rolling it was pretty fast. 13k rpm baby! LOL
🤣👍🏼🤣
Great little mod bill, I like the ingenuity behind it all too! Great video :) my favourite yet!
Thanks mate! It took a few days to work it all out, nothing lis a interesting as designing, cutting, and welding on the fly.
Bob the Builder meets Bill the Welder. Nice!
Thanks, I had fun with this one, every time I looked at it I thought "it would be better if..."
I started with 80gb of video and cut out 95% of it.
That was a great video Bill, that's what I was waiting to see, still can't believe it' but I seen it, 35mph is fast on that little cart, top end was crazy🤣🤣
Thanks, I wasn't sure it would move at all, but man, it was fast(for a couple minutes anyway) 🤣
KA-BOOM! Nice series Bill on the chainsaw motor experiment. You did get to have a little fun with it. RIP 👍🎥🇺🇸
Thanks 🙂
There is one left, it's been fun I am looking for the next series now
That's what I call scary fun look like you had a great time
The bigger motor was a lot faster, I didn't include the rear video on that one because I liked like this 😳 the whole time. Lol
@@GuysPlayingWithTools 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol watched the second time just to see the why am i doing this look on ya face when you got it lol
I was a little concerned when it got up to speed, half was that it was a bit faster than expected, half that it was gonna blow up right behind me. 😳
Lol 34 clicks well when i seen the hat go backwards i thought oh no hes going for it and his wife forgot to make him wear a helmet
It's my soft helmet. Lol
I just finished putting the predator back on with a slight gear change and no governor. 1 word to describe the results... faster. 😁
@@GuysPlayingWithTools lol
That was pretty cool 👍 would have liked to see the engine in action and when it blew up. But seeing your expectations were entertaining enough. Lol
I had a camera in the little motor, I was hoping for a big bang, but it went out with a whimper. The fuel was too hot and burned a hole in the piston. It was fun, fur a couple minutes. Lol
This is the the kind of science we are here for!
My favorite experiment in a long time. I am pondering what sort of foolishness I can come up with for the next one.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Could get a mini bike frame if you are into that sort of thing....
@Ben's Workshop I flipped one a couple weeks ago, a little pit bike(not a fan of them). I have my eyes open for a traditional mini bike or maybe a 250 dirt bike.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Fair enough. I did like the chain saw kart!
I did too. It had more top end than I expected, probably would have been more fun if I had geared it down a couple teeth on the little gear it ran a12 tooth, should have been 9 or 10.
C'mon I wanted to see flames 🔥 I'm surprised on how fast you got it to go 👍
I was a little worried about flames. The motor was right behind me and screaming like I had never heard a chainsaw scream. I was not 100% sure it would move at all, but when I heard it start winding up, I thought, "Oh yeah" 😁
Give my buddy Bill some love people 😊
Sick video! I wonder how two Stihl 088 clones would do since they have good torque too. My dad had a twin powered kart when he was younger and said it would throw rooster tails 20 ft
I had to sell it before it killed me. We later put more gear and and a tweaked 212 in that kart and renamed it "The Widowmaker". You find religion riding that close to the ground at 50+mph in a kart design to go 20 TOPS. Dual motor karts are crazy cool, I keep thinking about putting one together... one day I will wake up with nothing to do and get the welder out 😁😁
@@GuysPlayingWithTools For sure those 212’s with a little mod can make a good pucker!
@@VABlueRidgeExplorer Last kart I did was a full stage 1, it would pick up the front tires pretty easily
That’s been great fun Bill.
Thanks. One left, this time with a new and improved big motor. 😁
Hit that like button 🌞👍🌞
Absolutely! 😁
This was the most fun I have had working on a motor in a long time!
I have some concrete saws think they can be used for something like this
If I had one handy, I would try it. It would probably be at least as good as a 5hp tecumseh. The latest kart is getting its finishing touches this week
ive got a wacker cutoff saw, a bts1035 i think. its 73cc, 5.5hp, 3.7 ft lbs, red line is 9300. its got an awful restrictive air filter designed to trap dust, and a crappy exhaust, so i think it could get up to 7hp with a pod filter and a free flowing exhaust, or expansion chamber.
It would make an ok kart motor(not much acceleration, decent top end), but it would make an outstanding minibike motor.
Nice one
Thanks 🙂
Should try a bigger one
I should have, but when I started we talked about how fast we could get it going with a *little* engine and this one fell in my lap. I had the big Predator waiting in the wings too, it's on the next vid(Tuesday) and it FLYS
zoom zoom vroom
Yeah buddy.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools yah I forgot the nock nock boom at the end
I didn't show the last couple of runs because I had the video I wanted, I did a carb tweak, ran it down the street, and it went faster.... once. 🙂 It was like riding a roller coaster that might kill you
How far can you get on a tank of gas😂😂
Well... it blew up after about 2 miles so...2 miles 🤣
@@GuysPlayingWithTools okay 👌
@@robertmailhos8159 Nothing like a vehicle you have to hold on it's side with one hand while putting gas in it with the other LOL
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I saw that well at least you got it running again with the predator engine and the gas tank is in a better place than the tip it.on the side effects of the chain saw engine oh by the way I got to replace the oil sump gasket on my craftsman limb chipper leaf shredder besides the.oil seal on the out put shaft 😠🤬😡
Might as well do then all while it's apart.
The chainsaw engine was fun, but I am looking forward to getting the predator back in it
how much hp dose that lil guy got
I had a few mods on it, I would guess for a minute there it had about 4 We knew it was gonna blow quick at those revs though LOL
@@GuysPlayingWithTools ur so cool sry for me being late i have a 5.5hp stock 15k rpm
do u think it whould hold
@user-er5wz4su7q No worries, for me, it's early 😁
Once upon a time, big chainsaw motors were favored for racing. Mine was too small, but it was done just for fun, I knew it was gonna blow up when I built it, but it sounded fun.
How many cc's is your motor? The bigger the better because it's about torque more than horsepower.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools i think 58 but may be a 49cc one just found it yesterday but i dont know how to do the
Sprocket because it dosent have one i guess it jumps from the cluch u think using a stock chain but removing the cuting part is ok?
btw i got bike sprocket for the shaft
@user-er5wz4su7q Attaching it is the hard part. The chainsaw chain isn't nearly strong enough. It would stretch and break within a minute. I think it was this video, or one right before or after where I had the same problem(s). I decided to pull the chainsaw clutch off and weld a sprocket to it. Chains come in a lot of sizes, bikes are *usually* 35, and go karts are usually 41. You need to make sure you have all matching parts before you start cutting and welding.
Attaching the saw to the kart was also a lot of welding and bolting and using my imagination. Lol
If the saw is in good shape and is running OK, I have to ask.... why not sell the saw and use the money on a bigger engine? The HF 212 is a pretty great little kart motor, and you can get them on sale for $150 and it's gonna be 5x faster and out accelerate (and be more reliable) than any chainsaw motor. If you prep them both for racing, the 212 will still win by a mile.
