US Navy Nuclear Submarine Crashes Through Polar Ice

- U.S. Navy nuclear submarines USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS Connecticut (SSN 22) surfacing in the Arctic Ocean for Ice Exercise (ICEX).
During ICEX, Navy submarines would conduct Arctic transits in which they would surface and break the ice (usually 60-90 cm or 2-3 feet thick), collect data, and run other training exercise to gain experience working in the Arctic.

My brother served on a Nuclear sub during the late 60’s and early 70’s, and he told me they would just lurk under the polar ice for weeks at a time.
How exciting! What a career!

I never would have thought that they would take that risk of injuring lives or damaging such an expensive/important submarine. Those must be built incredibly strong to handle breaking through several feet of solid ice. Yes I know theyre built incredibly strong to resist the pressures of the deep ocean
Watch the 'Smarter Every Day' series on YT about the U.S. Navy sub. It starts with a team flown in on the ice measuring the depth of the ice and getting the sub positioned just right below.

The sudden realization. Oh shit I have to do things today
These things have come a long way from when Jules Verne theorycrafted them with his 20,000 Leagues book. In the novel the Nautilus couldn't even break through the ice, forcing the crew to have to take shifts coming out in diving suits to help dig their way out. Meanwhile this beast of a machine just punches through the ice like it was made of tin foil.
The warranty only covers one icepack break through.

Three Russian nuclear submarines simultaneously surfaced in the Arctic ice
Three nuclear submarines surfaced in a limited area with a radius of 300 meters, breaking through one and a half meters of ice. Before surfacing, one of the submarines conducted a practical torpedo firing, after which the torpedo was lifted to the surface through a specially made sagebrush.
