I've been a major fan of Putomayo Music since 2004. This is one of my favorite albums out of all of your discography. I've lost copies over the years and bought them again. I'm so glad this was finally posted!
I bought the CD of this album in 2006 and this is still my favorite of their compilations along with Asian Lounge and Yoga Lounge.
Liner notes (by Jacob Edgar)
"The lounge is a mythical place in popular culture, one that has endured and transformed over time from tacky tiki room to trendy downtempo hangout. The verb "to lounge", which means "to act or move idly or lazily", traces its origins to the 1500's although the fine art of mellowing out is an essential element of human nature. Lounging has evolved from a bunch of Neanderthals hanging out in trees picking fleas from each other's hair, to packs of trendy jtsetters downing cocktails in chic Parisian chill-out rooms.
As lounging has developed, so has its musical accompaniment. Perhaps the first great mood music of the 20th century was jazz, especially the unabashed laid-back cool jazz of Miles Davis and Chet Baker. The moog synthesizer doodlings of Martin Denny and the percolating mambo of Perez Prado in the 1950's moved into the sultry bossa nova of the 1960's, which was followed by the wah-wah soul of the seventies, then the primitive electronic fusions of the 1980's, and the hip-hop, trip-hop, ambient electronica of the 1990's. Today, chill-out music is a global phenomenon, and its eclectic variety reflects its multitudes of predecessors and influences.
The modern masters of so-called downtempo music are boundless globetrotters, incorporating equal amounts of the exotic and the mundane. European DJs collectives like Gotan Project and Mo' Horizons freely sample South American sounds to create unexpected new creations. indian sitars, which still conjure up mental images of late-sixties psychedelic rock, are used effectively by Italian producer Nicola Conte and German DJ project Jasmon to create music that is both provocative and reverent. Enigmatic Middle Eastern melodies provide a magical backdrop to the music of Hamid Baroudi, Blue Asia, and Dissidenten. Groups like Arling & Cameron, Pink Martini and Montefiori Cocktail reveal that the line between cool and kitsch is fine [...].
The music on "World Lounge" was selected and sequenced to serve as an aural backdrop for a contemporary lounging session. Whether curling up on a shag rug in front of the fireplace at home, or ordering manhattans with a group of friends at a local bar, we hope the music on Worold Lounge will help create an entrancing and invigorating mood, while introducing you to some of the most interesting artists on the global scene".
