LENNOX NO COOLING CALL

  • This was an interesting Lennox no cooling call where I found one of the two compressors disconnected. Once I tested everything I went ahead and re connected the compressor and found it to be working properly. I went ahead and checked out the second stage and found that to be short on refrigerant.

    It would have tripped me out to find a disconnected compressor not knowing why , I'm not sure I would have had the cojones to plug it in again, but now that I've seen you doing it and taking the appropriate steps , looks like I'm gonna have to grow a pair ! Thanks again, Chris , man's getting better just by watching your vids in the comfort of man's home !👍

    I am amazed how many technicians don't know that you need an ohm meter that reads millions of ohms to find a grounded compressor.
    Most FLUKE clamp meters only read in the thousands of ohms. Amprobe or Fieldpiece are my favorites.

    Very good commentary on this especially when you encounter a unit like this with so many unknowns, (one compressor disconnected, one stage not working 100%). You hit all the major diagnosis points and this where your experience comes in. Sometimes these can be frustrating and you can get lazy like not recover the charge and measure, etc. This way you know where the starting point is. Awesome diagnosis and fix to an old unit to give it some life again. I did notice you got the BTUs back up to about 10 tons at the end. Could have ended differently for someone that doesn't have the experience or desire to diagnose. Great work Chris!

    I worked for an outfit that guys didnt understand phasing. They put 3 compressors in one unit. The fourth I installed and made sure phasing was proper..never had an issue with that unit after that. Strange things people do at times. When you run hard and many many hours to make money mistakes happen. You guys out there running 24hr shifts aren't good for yourself or customers. Be safe out there.

      @HVACRVIDEOS  Před 5 lety +1

      chris soto here is some text from the Copeland tech bulletin # AE4-1294 I will paste the bulletin link at the bottom
      "When using megohmeters to evaluate the motor
      insulation of compressors, it is important to understand
      that they should not be used as one would a volt-ohm
      meter. A single megohmeter reading gives little insight
      into the condition of a motor’s insulation.
      Megohmeters are best used as a part of a regular
      maintenance program to monitor trends (over several
      months). For example, one might record a megohm value
      and compare it to a previous reading. If subsequent
      readings show a trend of lower and lower values, then
      corrective action (such as system clean up) should be
      taken."

    4:15 the usual way it's done is called shunting, the crankcase heaters are wired to the line side of the contactor, when the contactor pulls in, the compressor (being the larger load) takes most of the current, thereby reducing to nothing the current going to the heaters. When the compressor shuts off, the heater energizes again........i think LOL

    I wanna buy me the fieldpiece gauges from your affiliated company. Do they ship to the UK? I currently service vehicles for now and these gauges are 75mm but there might be reducers available on the internet. I wanna replace my old dial gauges with the long-ass hoses that leak gas (R134A). These fieldpiece gauges don't leak. I was thinking about using PTFE on the reducers and screwing them into the wireless gauges.

    What do you mean by “approach temperature” ?

    • @HVACRVIDEOS
      @HVACRVIDEOS  Před 5 lety +4

      The approach temp is the Difference between the liquid line temp and the outdoor air temp. Lennox uses this as their method of charging instead of subcooling

      @@HVACRVIDEOS Is the approach method alone good enough to assess one of these units? I would assume you would also want to assess the discharge temp in some fashion as well to ensure it actually has the correct charge in it. I do it all the time by simply feeling the liquid and suction lines to get a quick reading on how well a system is working, but it seems odd that they would use that as the sole basis for assessing the charge. Probably good for a new unit but seems sketchy on something that's out in the field and is old and crusty.

    3:33 I don't believe that is a valid test to see if that tubing may be used as a proper and functional ground. It may well be but that procedure cannot verify such a condition. (Not trying to be critical however it may mean the difference...)

    Videos are brilliant ! Over here in the UK r22 is banned for us wondering how your customers will fair up when they are forced to change pretty much there full system when is it due to be banned in the US ?

    • @stockholm2375
      @stockholm2375 Před 5 lety +3

      R-22 will be banned in the US in 2020; any existing units using R-22 will remain in service until they are replaced.

    • @zak636
      @zak636 Před 5 lety +2

      We where allowed for a while to stick in a drop in gas but at the stage now we have to break the bad news to our customers that they need to replace there systems once a non serviceable call occurs

    • @stockholm2375
      @stockholm2375 Před 5 lety +3

      Funny how that works, for us we're allowed to service existing units with any remaining gas, just production and import are banned. I take it in the UK R-22 is completely banned and any units are required by law to be replaced/retrofitted?

    • @zak636
      @zak636 Před 5 lety +2

      @@stockholm2375we are the exact same over here in relation to import and production of it , we can also still service systems with r22 eg cleaning etc fan motors things like this but if we can see a clear shortage in gas or complete loss we are required by law to notify the customer to change it or retrofit it and to be honest in our case we see customers just going for a full change of system rather than retro fitting the costs with labour with retro fitting and installing a new system arent far off each other plus they get a nice warranty with new equipment the amount of times I come across r22 systems that are short knowing that could fix the issue but instead am not allowed is quite annoying am all about the first time fixes where possible
