- "Colonel Sahab is a doctor in a psychiatry ward and Nurse Radha is heart-broken after a civilian patient, Dev Kumar, whom she cared for, pouring out her love and affection, leaves the hospital, as she had been unable to keep her heart separate from her professional work and had fallen in love with her patient. Next Arun Choudury, a writer and poet enters as a patient, suffering acute mania after being rejected by his lover, Sulekha. After refusing to take his care, Radha relents and starts nursing him. In between while caring for Arun she reminisces her past and tells a story of how she took care of injured brave army soldiers when she was posted in Laddakh during the Sino-Indian war of 1962.
Gradually Arun gets cured by the love of Nurse Radha, who yet again falls hopelessly in love with her patient. Unable to hide from the truth yet unable to face it, Radha herself goes insane and is admitted to the same clinic. Arun, promises to wait for her until she recovers, finding no other options that he could choose to make her better again.

Rajesh Khanna is definitely one of my all-time favorite. If anyone thinks that Rajesh Khanna was not a very good actor, please watch Anand (1971). I bet your opinion will be permanently change due to his best acting ever. Anand is my No. 1 all-time favorite movie, rather Anand one of the finest souls one can ever experience in lifetime.

Speechless after Waheedaji's performance. In the song "Humne dekhi hai ...." one could feel her pain expressed in her eyes. My heart sank and I felt like giving her a big hug. What a tremendous performance. Rajesh Khanna was terrific too.
I am fortunate enough to watch Original version of this movie in Bengali(I think it's name is Deep jala jaaye). Suchithra Sen who acted in place of Waheeda was unmatchable. Waheeda's performance is very good but Sen's involvement in the character was so deep and she lived to the character.

The original novel is also in Bengali written by the great novelist Ashutosh Mukhopadhya.. Yes the original movie is Deep jele Jai starred by legendary Suchitra Sen Basanta Choudhary and Anil Chattopaadhyaay.

Waheeda ji is in one of her incredible performance, outstanding. This is the remake of one of the best Bangla film -- Deep Jole Jaye -- based on a short story by a renowned Bangla writer Ashutosh Mukherjee. The iconic role of Waheeda ji was played by veteran actress Suchitra Sen. Before Hindi remake Khamoshi, the Bangla film was remade in Telegu, which was a great hit and Telegu actress Savitri got the National Award of Best Actress, for the same role which was played by Waheeda ji in Khamoshi. There are some evergreen melodious songs and the credit goes to the eternal music of giant Hamant da.

He love was not returned and she could not express it, she reamined silent and played her role, and had to raplay it again with Arun, which just pushed her over the corner. Just thought I would clarify the story for those who commented that they don't understand why she became mad in the end.

Hemant Mukhopadyay is the best especially since he Produced, sang, and composed many Hindi and Bengali songs, such as with Khamoshi, Anupama, & Monihar.
He was an excellent music composer,
and Film Producer for his “Gitanjali Films”.
Also, he knew to appropriately select himself to sing for Dharmendra, & Kishore Da
to sing for Rajesh Khanna’s role for the song,
“Woh Shaam”.
Being a specialist myself in Psychotherapy, “Khamoshi” was an inspiration for me since childhood, and I trained in several inpatient Psychiatric facilities. Like Rajesh Khanna’s role as Arun having Acute Schizophrenia (known as Schizophreniform if less than 6 months), I saw many patients displaying paranoid delusions and hallucinations.
A well-made film similar to the American made, “Lilith”, starring Warren Beaty, with reverse roles where he was the Therapist.

Coming back to Lilith, I would say it is Lilith which is similar to Khamoshi and not the other way round. I say this because the Bengali original of Khamoshi i.e Deep Jele Jai ( Khamoshi for the most part is a pretty faithful frame by frame remake of DJJ) came out in 1959, while Lilith starring Warren Beatty came out five years later in 1964.

Movies of this calibre was made only during those days of golden era.. classic masterpiece..a very soulful.movie n well directed n the actors have given their best..really movies like this will be missed always..nowadays we cant find any movies like this anymore..truly the golden era of hindi cinema is the all time best..
