  • In a case of suspected mistaken identity, two pillars of the Howard County community were killed on March 6, 1981, when someone set fire to their house. Joe Selby, the manager of the well-known Enchanted Forest in Ellicott City, and his wife Betty, were members of a large family in the county who shared the same last name. After their nephew was involved in a bar fight five years earlier, someone is suspected to have retaliated with the fire…but burned the wrong house down. One mile apart, the two different Selby families both had their names on their mailboxes, one “J. Selby,” and the other “J.N. Selby.” In what is believed to be a mailbox mix-up, two innocent, beloved people lost their lives. Now, 40 years later, we need your help to bring this cold-case to justice.
The Howard County Police Department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information in the case. Contact police at 410-313-STOP or email hcpdcrimetips@howardcountymd.gov.

I'd love to see this solved. The killer has no conscience, and if people are too cowardly to come forward, that's just as bad.

I think that this was a smart idea of the police department to do this video. Hopefully, someone will tell what they know. Just think if it was your mom and dad wouldn’t you want to know? Just think how much better you will feel getting it off your chest.

SOMEbody wasted no time selling off the property to a developer. I had been to the Enchanted Forest as a child, and loved it. I happened to be passing by when it was obviously being torn down. I stopped in, thinking perhaps I could buy the gatehouse, and have it moved to another place. They were very nasty. Now tHis puts it together, and it looks very shady. There was simply no reason for how the developer acted.

Same, I raised my 4 children in Ellicott City, lived here for 32yrs. No idea why Enchanted Forest closed, I know now😣. You have great inside info. Im not buying the"mistaken identity" theory🙄 seriously-is someone going to burn a family going off the name on the mailbox?!

The Selby's had no financial interest in the Enchanted Forest which was owned by the Harrison Family. I don't really think that the selling of the property had any connection with their deaths at all. I do have to wonder why the Selby children were so hostile to the police and refused to cooperate with interviews, etc....it is alleged that at the time more than one of the Selby children were involved in alleged illegal activities...perhaps whomever committed the arson thought the wrong family member was home. I knew Joe and Betty both. There were decent folks

Mistaken identity seems like a long shot. In cases like this where both adults are killed, especially since they seemed to be sitting on a fortune, I'd look a little closer to home. As in someone who stood to inherit.

Friends told police they planned to return to the bar later that night to hear a Blue Grass band... but didn't show up. They were found in bed. No mention of autopsies. Were they murdered and then the house was set on fire to cover up? Cause of death?
Who stood to gain from their deaths?

I don't believe this is a case of mistaken identity..The person who did this, went inside the house so they could confirm both people were home..This sounds more like someone close to home who couldn't wait to get their inheritance or a piece they knew they had coming in the event of both their deaths..This crime smells like greed, not revenge..

People, inherently, want answers to any unanswered puzzle. The person or persons responsible need to be held accountable for the deaths of Mr&Mrs Selby. Everyone, especially the victims themselves, are deserving of that. The answer will finally allow closure for everyone.
I'm sure that I am thinking the same way the police did. That someone from the 'other' Selby family would be able to provide information on the altercation in the parking lot. It might be worth going through that again just to see if anyone is interested in talking after all this time.
I do wonder though. What if the idea of the 'wrong John Selby' is not correct? It may have acted as a very effective red herring. Sometimes people can get an idea that may seem to fit everything that happened but actually doesn't. It can be hard to jump out of that because it makes so much sense. But, what if the victims were, indeed, the intended victims. Mr Selby did own a piece of land that would be 'ripe' for development. There are so many people that could benefit from the sale of it. I don't just mean those that sold it but also those that wanted it or wanted his amusement park gone. There could be a lot of possibilities with that.
Also, and I hate to say this, but no one is liked by absolutely everyone. There could easily be someone that felt slighted in some way. People of all ages can do stupid things at times.
These are just random thoughts and I'm sure these avenues have all been perused. I have hope that this case will not remain unsolved.
