    I learned a lot from this at perfect timing, we really needed a clean on the bottom side. I found from some other RVers that a great product called 30 seconds....really does magic on the awnings with mold present. I sprayed this on and it nearly cleans itself. I made sure to rinse very well...and it's a beautiful result with less work.

    This is the best video on awning cleaning that I've seen. I used it last year and it worked pretty well. This year, I tried something different and the results were outstanding. I used 30 seconds outdoor cleaner that I got at the Home Depot. I mixed a 1/2 gallon of product with 1/2 gallon of water. I sprayed in on the underneath side of my awning and rolled it up for 3 minutes. The label says to let it soak for 3 minutes. Then I extended the awning and sprayed it off with the hose. It looks beautiful and NO scrubbing.

    Hi Jerry, We are new to owning an RV. We bought totaled travel trailer at auction 2 years ago and my husband spent last spring and summer making it look like new. Unfortunately the awning sat in the auction parking lot most of the winter it was there so it had a lot of mildew damage. I watched every video and read every article about how to clean a RV awning. I liked yours the most. I have probably watched this video 15 times. I followed your directions almost to a T last year. I only wish I would have followed them exactly. The bleach Dawn water mixture worked great leaving me with less mildew damage than I expected. The part of your directions that I didn't follow was concerning the aerospace protectant. I bought the protectant and the sprayer you recommended but I thought if applying the protectant on one side was good then applying it on both sides would be better. This was a terrible mistake. When I opened my awning last spring it had so much mold that I thought we were going to have to replace it. But I followed your step by step process and once again it worked. There's a little more mildew damage but it was a 80% improvement. I want to say thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'm wondering if there's a product or a way that people keep water from getting in to the awning over the winter? We live in Pittsburgh and get lots of rain and snow. Our awning does not seem to be watertight when it's closed up. Even one rain is enough that when I open the awning it is soaked. Help!

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  Před 3 lety +2

      It’s tough to keep the wet from entering the awning. Even in warmer climates, rain seeps in. It’s just one of the spring maintenance items to clean every year. The small amount of bleach and a good scrub with a soft brush help works out the mildew and slows growth throughout the year.

    When I put the 303 on mine, I use a sponge and rubber gloves. I start with it out a foot or two so I can reach across it, and use a bowl to hold the 303, then dip and wipe. Move it out that much more and go over it on the new exposed until I get done and role it up without drying. It roles out smooth without that tacky sound after that and I think must somewhat treat the underside too. I use 303 inside and out and on the side walls and treads of my tires on my camper and vehicles. It does help with weather check. Thanks for all your videos.

    That works pretty good. My wife and I use a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alchohol. We used it for the first time on our pop up when we owned that. It had mildew on the canvas. Came right out with light scrubbing and never returned.
    We now use it on our awning for our travel trailer. Works great and doesn't harm the awning. Love your videos we actually started using happy camper because of your recommendations.

    Excellent video Jerry, very helpful as I just purchased a used motorhome and will be cleaning the awning just as you have done. The only thing I could say would be that you might want to protect the side of your coach as just about any cleaning agent can streak vinyl graphics. It happened to me many yrs ago on my new Holiday Rambler and the streaks were there until I sold it. I think buying just about the cheapest poly you could and then taping it next to the awning pullout and then along the entire edge of the awning so no chemicals hit the sides of the coach. Again, thanks for the great videos, I just subscribed so I'm looking forward to more of your videos.

    My recipe - one garden sprayer, one part bleach, five parts water. Rinse awning, soak with bleach water solution, roll up awning while wet, wait 30 minutes, open awning and rinse liberally with clean water. Very little scrubbing required afterward for the random bird poop, etc. Been doing it once or twice a year for years. Works amazingly well and doesn't damage the awning.

    Good video on cleaning the awning. You referred to Dometics instructions for the use of Bleach and Dawn dish soap which Dometic recommended. I researched and review the Dometic Awning manual and found no mention of using a brush in the instructions. I'm sure we can all agree that a little elbow grease always dose a good job. I also found a Dometic product. Dometic Premium RV Awning Cleaner and video. It appeared to work extremely well. I did ask for clarification as to what type of dirt and debris mediums were used. Iy clean up nice. No UV protectant just a cleaner.

    Another suggestion when using this technique is to protect yourself especially if you're sensitive to chemicals. Wear a long sleeve shirt, disposable latex or nitrile gloves, eye protection, and a disposable mask (everybody uses them these days) You don't want bleach droplets in your eyes, mouth, or nose. Also, bleach can harm plant life near your work area so wet down your bushes, flower beds, etc. before you start spraying bleach on your awning. When you are all finished with your project, rinse down your plant life once more.

      I don’t know of any properties in 303 to prevent mildew. The small amount of bleach and letting it stay on the awning for the short period helps kill it. Damp and rolled up awning for periods of time is hard to prevent, but a good cleaning once or twice a year keeps its from becoming a nasty mess.

    Hi Jerry, Great video! I am also encountering the same issues with mold and will give this a go. Silly question, have you cleaned your awnings since installing you Vista Shade? I installed mine after seeing your installation video. I am wondering if I should remove mine completely or if the bleach/dawn solution would harm the shade material? What are your thoughts? Thanks!

      It should not. It’s a diluted solution and it’s on the awning for a short period. I’ve treated mine and don’t see any changes in the fabric. I also spray 303 UV protectant amzn.to/3F3buLN on the awning twice a year that will extend the life.

    Hi Jerry, I am fairly new to your channel and have enjoyed watching dozens of them. Although I Subscribed and liked dozens of your videos so far, I haven't made written any comments. But I do have a question about this one cleaning your awning. You did a great job and the results were amazing - I thought for sure those moldy streaks underneath were going to be permanently stained...but your bleach/Dawn mixture did REALLY GOOD! I wonder...do you think treating it with OxyClean would be safer than the bleach (in order to avoid any caustic damage that the bleach may cause)? Even though you and the Dometic recommendations got great results and it worked like a charm, I just wanted to know your experienced thoughts about using OxyClean solution and sprayed on with your professional sprayer bottle???

    • @iLoveRVlife
      @iLoveRVlife  Před 5 lety +4

      So glad you found the channel helpful. I would image OxyClean, an oxygen bleach, would work too. As far as the chlorine bleach, it's a small amount and not something left on for a long period of time. It's main purpose is to kill the mold spore (that period of time with the awning rolled up) and Dawn is the cleaning agent. I may give Oxyclean a try next cleaning and see how it works.

    • @hummer4u2nv11
      @hummer4u2nv11 Před 5 lety +2

      @@iLoveRVlife Thanks for the reply Jerry. Yes I noticed you didn't leave it on too long but I was still skeptical about the caustic nature of actual 'bleach'. Keep up the great work and thank you for taking the time to make/share your videos.

      Not mentioned here, but there is 303 and 303 for specifically for fabric. Do not use "303 Fabric Guard" on other items where regular "303 Marine Aerospace Protectant" is used (tires, plastic, vinyls, rubber) as it will leave a oily residue which is extremely difficult to remove, but it is formulated for fabric use. This oily residue is what helps restore the waterproof qualities of the fabric, regular 303 Marine will not restore beading of water on the fabric and but will help UV damage.
