Cafe Painting in Watercolour and Ink | How to Find the PERFECT SCENE

- While visiting my mother in the US I popped out to a lovely cafe where I painted the view from the window. It was a typical view of a Walgreens on a street corner in small town America. I offer tips on how to find a composition and how to then use other elements in the scene to emphasise the focal point. I then add colour using a limited palette and complementary colours to help make the composition pop. I hope you come along and enjoy a cup of tea while you watch me paint for you!
I met another talented CZcamsr at the cafe and he graciously filmed some of the footage of me painting. You can find his work here:

Lovely to see a new “tiny”, thank you. My Go Draw palette has finally arrived 🥰 and I’m having so much fun doing little paintings. I become so absorbed when I’m working on a tiny that it’s like yoga or meditation. Such peacefulness back in my life, thank you!
Oh how wonderful! I’m glad you’re enjoying yours! Yes, I think the tiny paintings are quite magical to create. It’s like art for faeries. 😊
Generica in America never looked more quaint ❤ 🎨🖌️
Awww thanks. 😊
I finally got around to watching your vids again and they're wonderful.
I love how you talk about the angles, I’m always trying to master these….you’re a great inspiration.
Thank you so much! ❤
I trally enjoyed watching your thinking process about composition. It is also great to see how much you can do with a good selection of six colours. Thanks for sharing this, Leslie. Have a good time in the USA!
My pleasure! I didn’t have as much time this week since I was visiting my mom, so it seemed appropriate to make a more educational video. 😊
It’s like a journal of thumbnails ❤
It is 😊
Lovely tiny painting!
I love you're art sm i found you on tiktok and you inspired me to paint ive never done it before and im hoping to start so i was looking through videos and came across your channel i had no idea you had one but im so glad i do now
Very interesting and exciting work. Excellent ❤❤
Beautiful voice. Very soothing. Lovely painting to
Thank you so much ❤
OK, that is little! A gorgeous sketch all the same. Thank you
Only talented you could make a Walgreens look good in a painting…next time McD’s arches?? 😊 you have inspired me to Plein air and am waiting for my Sendak to be delivered ❤
Oh Leslie, we have so many more beautiful places to paint instead of a drug store. Hope you are enjoying your visit with your mom. Only you could make a Walgreens look so picturesque. ❤ from NY State.
Sooo true, but I had limited time and it was cold, so I was forced to choose a view from these windows. 😅 I posted a short video this week of a barn that is from the same town. 😊
@@LeslieStroz I look forward to seeing it too.
You managed to let painting look very intressting. I like it very much. Many Greetings and I wish you a very nice time at home😊❤❤
Thanks, Christiane! It was a lovely visit. 😊
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada 🇨🇦
🎉❤😊
Wow! Can’t wait to try small painting 🖼️
Terrific! They are fun to do. 😊
Hi Leslie. I did my first tiny painting yesterday with my Go Draw tiny palette. Your videos have brought back my love of creativity. I wish I could post a photo here to show how you inspired me. ❤ Question. I will be going home to Canada soon for a visit. Did you ask the employees of the café is it was OK to set up or do you just go ahead? Hope you are having a lovely visit with your mom. xo
Congratulations on your new tiny painting practice! You can always send me a photo of your work on Instagram. And no, I don’t ever ask if it’s okay to paint; I just tuck myself into a corner or small space and do it. If I was setting up a big easel it would be different, but people work on computers and read, etc, in cafes all the time, so a bit of sketching is no more conspicuous. Have fun visiting Canada. 😊
I love these long form videos for the tiny paintings. They are very informational and I’ve learned so much from you. Thanks so much for sharing . I look forward to more on here and Patreon.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed this, and learned from it. ☺️
Wow I love this sooo much thank you 💖
I love seeing the different architecture in different countries they are always soo fascinating and i always wanna try to draw them this had gotten to the point where when I went to my friend's house and were walking around her neighbourhood I was an interesting house and stopped to really absorb the house beauty.. i have done this a lot of times she always gets annoyed 😅😅
That’s fantastic! Once you start doing art regularly it’s impossible to turn off your Artist’s eye. Non-artist friends often don’t understand. I usually just take quick photos when I’m with an unsympathetic audience. It’s nice to have photo references for bad weather days or studio paintings too. 😊
It's fun to see the difference of architecture of differents countries..😉 I'll never dare painting with people around so intimating to me 🤷♀️😁but I start sketching with pencils and ink markers and it's a little bit challenging but worth it 🤦♀️
Thank you for the tips and bises 😉👍🙏🏼😘
You’re welcome!! Take baby steps towards painting outside. Paint from your car, or a quiet park, etc. Most people don’t even notice (or care!). 😊
@@LeslieStroz That's it !!! You've totally understood...I love sketching in my car with a little bit of music it's perfect for me 😉
This video is very calm and soft. Thank you for making it 🙂.
You’re so welcome. 😊
Awesome!! Your painting is beautiful attractive. Why can you draw view that looks so real? It's soooo beautiful❤I love your colors and pictures❤I want to see stunning view like your drawing.Thank you!
You came back home❤❤❤
I did! Visiting family. 😊
Lots of cracking advice -thank you. But I do have a question. When you have been through your tiny sketchbook once do you then go through it "backwards" so you also paint on the other side of the page? Or do you think clipping the palette onto the finished painting might damage it? Do you ever use both pages to make a longer painting (like here when you are in a cafe and could put your palette down on the table)?
Thanks! I don’t draw on the reverse pages, no. I also don’t do two page spreads in this sketchbook. It’s just personal preference. 😊 I like that when I turn each page there is nothing else to distract me from the single painting.
❤
❤❤❤❤❤
Greetings from India. Watching your videos and painting style is so therapeutic and relaxing. I specially like your tiny sketchbook style. Do you conduct classes in doing small sketchbook paintings? 🙏
I had the audio off and was so confused as to where you were 😂 the cars were the biggest giveaway, they're so big compared to the uk haha!!
Yes, the big cars and the stores that are in almost every town! There is definitely pretty architecture in America, but where I was I’d have had to paint outside and it was still a bit too cold for that! 😊
and I thought, that my A6 sketchbooks are VERY small... Well, LOL
At 58, my eyesight is not what it used to be, even with glasses I feel like I can’t paint this small. I wish, but I need at least a 5x8 to start. Of course it takes me two days to finish anything lol.
I have a question : Do I have to use watercolor in the tiny pallet
It depends on your goal, where you are painting and what is most convenient for you. I don't leave the house so I use a medium one, the size of my small hand, space isn't a problem for me and I'm still learning so 12 colors is enough for me, I have variety to explore and the limit to learn to use a few colors and make mixtures, and of course: a spacious godê to analyze what I'm doing.
Awesome!! Your painting is beautiful attractive. Why can you draw view that looks so real? It's soooo beautiful❤I love your colors and pictures❤I want to see stunning view like your drawing.Thank you!
That’s so kind; thank you. I spent more time on the drawing on this one. 😊
