Running The 100km South Coast Challenge Ultramarathon - I Was NOT Expecting The Result

- The South Coast Challenge 100km has always looked like a stunning run to me. It heads past lovely coastal views including Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, takes you through massive chunks of the South Downs Way, and also sees you run through Brighton at the midway point.
With two ultras already successfully in the bag for 2022, I was keen to sign up and experience another. I'd heard that the South Coast Challenge was a tough, brutal, yet beautiful course, and that it was well worth trying someday. That was all the information I needed. A few days after completing my last Ultra (the North Downs Way 100), I had signed up to jump back into the ultra saddle. I'm glad I did; this was such a fun and challenging race!
The South Coast Challenge is an event organised Action Challenge as part of their Ultra Challenge series. Participants can either walk or hike 25km, 50km or 100km across the weekend. 263 people finished the 100km distance with 113 people withdrawing (getting a DNF) due to a number of reasons like foot troubles and exhaustion.

Dude how did you just run 100km in 12h and still look better than me after climbing the stairs 😂 incredible achievement 💪🏻
Thanks so much mate! Haha, I'm sure you're absolutely golden after climbing the stairs 🤣
Well done Craig, that's an incredible run! Your videos really inspire me and I've entered my first ultra for next year. And thanks for such a speedy upload!
Thank you, that means a lot to hear that. Glad that the videos are useful. Very best of luck with your first ultra, you got this!
Epic result mate. Watched to the end. Your getting stronger and stronger as a trail runner!
Thanks for watching Phil, was very chuffed with the outcome! Definitely think the close proximity to the North Downs Way 100 was a positive factor in the race performance. I'm starting to really love trail running more and more!
@@runningcafe1 Youve got one very important personal trait that you down play and thats you don't seem to mind the suffering. You have mentioned it a few times on how bad your feet were at 40 miles in that NDW 100 yet you still went on and got another 60 miles done! That comfortable being uncomfortable will hold you in good stead as you continue your ultra running. The total opposite side of the coin though is that you also really seem to enjoy it too! as in, you appreciate the countryside around you and seem blessed to be there :)
@@trailrunningphil Thanks Phil, I never really thought of it like that but that makes a lot of sense. I can keep plodding on in a fairly 'cheerful' and positive state despite being in quite a bit of pain, I think that's something that all ultra runners do to some degree depending on how hard they push themselves. Yeah, I really am enjoying the countryside. Having been a roadrunner from my introduction to running up till now roughly, I've never really given trail running a second thought but it's such a lovely way to get the miles in!
Really enjoying your channel by the way. The run you did through the Brecon Beacons looks amazing, good training ground for your upcoming race. Best of luck for the Thames Path, you got this my friend!
@@runningcafe1 Thanks mate. Likewise, I look forward to what you do next!
Well done good kid👍🏽
Well done
Great run, well done
Cheers Jamin
Great video! Looking forward to walking this challenge in September 23. Good to see some of the route.
Thanks Sarah! Best of luck for when September rolls around
Amazing achievement. Well done on getting 3rd place. You looked in good shape throughout.
Thank you for your comment. I felt pretty good throughout except for during some of the steep climbs, lots learnt to improve upon for future but a very fun race
Great Run and result Craig! Great effort 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Thanks very much!
Amazing Craig! I live on where thr course went and it looked really good, maybe one for next year!
It’s a lovely course, I’d highly recommend it if you are able to give it a go
Fantastic achievement! Well done Craig 💪👏 ps there are various taps along the SDW if you run out of water in future 😃
Thank you Ben! Wow, didn’t know that. Are they listed online somewhere? Definitely sounds like they come in handy.
I know of the tap at the Dirty Habit pub on the north downs way which saved me during a difficult section of my first 100 miler so any taps are welcome taps in my book!
Great result. Well done. Doing the Thames Path 100km this weekend. Walking most of it but still nervous
Thanks Tom. The Thames Path is a really nice route and mostly flat so should be an enjoyable one for you. Best of luck and you got this!
Nerves are a good thing. Back yourself, manage problems when they arise and chunk it down mate. Im also taking part. See you next to the river on Saturday! :)
Respect big man Craig!!!
Thank you sir!
Well done. I love this event
Thanks!
Another great video and we’ll done on 3rd! What made you choose cotton socks tho?!? 😂
Cheers mate! Honestly I have no idea why I chose plain everyday cotton socks. Definitely lacking some brain cells there 🤣
Great effort. Well done 👍🍷
Thanks!
Well done Craig
Thank you sir!
You're a beast of a runner mate. How much training are you doing? Congrats on 3rd place 👍🏻🏃♂️
Thanks Mark, means a lot. Currently around 40-50 miles a week but I'm really trying to incorporate some more hill and speed sessions into the training so I get good variety rather than just good mileage. Something I can definitely improve on, for sure, but that's the beauty of running as you can always do things better
Very strong! Come over to Vitosha 100 in Bulgaria, you will enjoy it :)
I will check it out!
Whats next? Any runs you're planning on training for this autumn/winter?
Thank you!
Got a few runs this autumn and winter planned.
1. Folkestone half marathon in September
2. Port Lympe 10k in October
3. Wendover Woods 50 miler (By centurion) in November
4. Hurtwood trail ultra in December (about 31 mile ultra)
Should be good!
LOVE these videos.......can you be any more chilled? 🤔😁🦾🏃Great achievement!
Cheers Stuart! Chilled is how I like things to be! Thanks for watching
