Queen is a genre of their own!
Freddie wrote this as a tribute to Aretha Franklin. Brian often says Freddie wanted to"BE" Aretha. 😁
Now you REALLY need to watch this live! Either the Montreal '81 concert or the Milton Keynes concert. The vocals live will impress you just as much as the studio version.

Nice reaction! Your knowledge and respect for the song is evident. I think this channel is going to blow up.
As others have mentioned, Freddie was primarily inspired by Aretha Franklin when he wrote this gospel influenced song, and actually claimed to personally consider this song to be superior to Bohemian Rhapsody which he had written one year earlier.
Freddie always tried to keep things interesting and could write and sing heavy metal, Ragtime, blues, funk--whatever--on the same album, all the while totally nailing it.
You will enjoy the live in Montreal 1981 performance, money back guarantee!

Freddie Mercury wrote this for Aretha Franklin who he admired. It was his favorite song. More Queen! ❤ He also did two of his own albums including an opera album with the great Spanish soprano Monserrat Caballe called Barcelona. Thanks.

The thing with Queen, is that three of them were all very capable singers, with very different, but complimentary voices. Drummer, Roger Taylor's voice was strong on the high end, with a rough, gritty character (he had gone to prep school on a scholarship as a boy soprano, and had a four octave range. He could hit an E6 in the early days ), Guitarist Brian May's voice was strong on the low end, and had a round quality, and Freddie's voice was just incredibly agile and powerful. According Roger Taylor, the key to the Queen sound, was that they all sang every part of the arrangement, layering them into a full chorus.

If you think that such an intricate song could not be done live then think again. Queen took this song to another level live, Montreal 1981, and the vocals were amazing. If you love Gospel then try 'We're all God's people' or 'Let me Live'. Queen did so many genres of music but always with that special Queen sound.

    Queen in a nutshell -
Queen is a British rock band that was formed in 1970 and was comprised of:
Freddie Mercury - Lead vocals and piano
Roger Taylor - Drummer and vocals
Brian May - Lead guitar and vocals
    John Deacon - Bass guitar
Queen released 15 studio albums, 10 live albums, 16 compilation albums, two soundtrack albums, 2 extended plays, 73 singles, and seven promotional singles. They were one of the most influential groups in rock history.
Freddie Mercury was born Sept. 6, 1946, as Farrokh Balsara in Stone Town, Zanzibar to a Parsee family. Parsee (or Parsi) are adherents of the religion Zoroastrianism. They descended from the ancient Persians who fled from Persia (now Iran) to India during the Muslim persecution in the 7th-8th centuries. Freddie's parents were from Balsar, India where his extended family still lives. Freddie's father worked for the British government and was stationed on the African island of Zanzibar where Freddie and his sister were born.
At the age of 7 years old, his aunt was visiting and noticed that young Farrokh (he wasn't Freddie yet) could play on the family piano any tune he heard on the radio just by ear. She immediately insisted to her sister, that they start Farrokh on piano lessons which they did.
At age 8, Farrokh was sent to St. Peter's School, a private all-boys boarding school located in the town of Panchgani, India. It is ranked among the top ten boarding schools in India and catered to the sons of British ex-patriots. The school is known to produce students speaking with the upper-class British accent known as the Received Pronunciation (RP) which is the accent of the Royal Family. That explained Freddie's very crisp, posh British accent.
It was while at school that he began calling himself the very British name, Freddie (it is said that he hated the name Farrokh).
It was during his free time from school that he spent with his aunt and grandparents in Bombay that he discovered and indulged in a growing love of music. He also formed his first band with friends, a rock and roll band called The Hectics.
Freddie continued to study piano while at school up to piano grade level four. He never learned to actually read or write music and he never had any vocal training other than participating in the boy's choir at school.
After completing school, Freddie returned to Zanzibar until 1964 when the Muslim revolution forced his family to flee to London with basically the clothes on their backs.
While attending Ealy College in London and studying Graphic Design, Freddie was singing in a blues-rock band out of Liverpool England, called IBEX. IBEX later changed its name to Wreckage.
In 1968, while still singing in the group Wreckage, Freddie became friends with a fellow student also studying Graphic Design at Ealy College named Tim Staffell. Tim was also the lead singer/bass player for a rock group called "Smile" in London that he formed with his grammar school friend, Brian May (lead guitar), and Roger Taylor (drummer). Tim invited Freddie to come to a rehearsal session of "Smile" where he first met Roger and Brian.
Freddie became a regular at Smile rehearsals and performances, and a good friend to both Brian and Roger. "Smile" was fairly successful on the college circuit and had cut a record but it could not seem to get an album contract. Then in 1969, Tim was offered a position in the band Humpty Bong, which was an even more successful band that actually had an album contract.
Brian and Roger were devasted that Tim was leaving and considered giving up music altogether but their good friend, Freddie talked them out of it. What Brian and Roger soon learned is that their shy, quiet, and reserved friend, Freddie, could be awfully persuasive when he was really passionate about something. He convinced them that they were too talented to give up music and they must form a new group.
So Roger and Brian began looking for a lead singer and a bass player. They auditioned several singers but none hit the mark for them. Then one day, Freddie quietly came to them and said, "Who you need is me."
They really didn't know what to say. Yes, Freddie was a good friend (at the time Roger and Freddie were flatmates and ran a booth in Kensington Market selling used clothing to make ends meet)) and they knew Freddie performed in a group out of Liverpool, but to be honest, they had never actually heard him sing. Plus Freddie's personality was so shy and quiet and reserved. That is not exactly the type of personality a group wants as their lead singer.
But Freddie was persuasive. Brian booked an audition room at his school, Imperial College and Freddie auditioned for them. I don't know what songs they performed but needless to say, both Brian and Roger were shocked when they first heard Freddie's voice. Though Freddie did have not control of his voice he would later develop, they were astounded to hear him sing. Roger did claim in later interviews, that he thought that Freddie sounded a bit like a billy goat because of his extremely fast vibrato.
What possibly shocked them both the most, is their quiet, shy, and reserved friend, when he began to sing, turned into this flamboyant and dynamic performer. From the very beginning, Freddie had no fear on stage. He would simply become this showman with a magnetic onstage bravado.
Freddie's range was from F2 to F6 (he frequently hit F5 during live concerts). His voice could go from a deep, throaty rock growl to a tender, vibrant tenor, then on to a high-pitched, perfect coloratura, pure and crystalline in the upper reaches. Also, Freddie utilized subharmonics, which was and still is rare for singers. Subharmonics are generated when the ventricular folds in your throat vibrate along the vocal folds and are typically associated with Tuvan throat singers.
Needless to say, they agreed to form a new band together. They began looking for a bass player and went through about 4 before they finally found 19-year-old John Deacon (Deacy was the youngest member of Queen). According to Roger, if the other bass players they had tried either had the skills and talent they were looking for, their personalities didn't mesh with the other three, or if their personalities worked well with the other three, their talent and skill did meet the mark.
John (Deacy) Deacon had the talent and the skills, with a quiet and calm personality (though Brian admitted that Deacy could blow up with the best of them at times). He became the 4th member and bass guitarist for Queen in 1970.

Freddie was a musical anomaly, he could hear a song on the radio and replay it on the piano. Born with 4 extra incisers which he believed attributed to his almost 4 octave range and the ability to control his fast vibrato. He was born to sing and entertain us, a true performer.

👏👏👏 This band has a unique and amazingly colorful repertoire from metal to pop music (cca. 200 songs) and Freddie Mercury who was an untrained singer could sing all of them effortless. Though we also have to mention, that there were 2 more great singers in Queen, John Deacon the bass player was the exception.

And it really is Queen - the whole group were top tier musicians - and backing singers! - and the success was that amalgamation - not just the front man. RIP Freddie - keeping heaven rocking.

Freddie and Queen really played a lot of different genres all the time. Queen is a rock band that plays glam rock, prog rock, some metal, vaudeville, music hall, blues, movie soundtrack, gospel, jazz, waltzes, lullabys, r&b, funk, disco, anthem rock, arena rock, light opera, pop, and I know I'm missing a lot more genres they played in. Basically - they are very talented musicians in whatever they create.

There's another studio version like this one filmed on the same day and same studio that, during Brian's guitar solo, it shows clips of Freddie on the stage as well as Brian walking and playing across it. If you enjoy opera, if you enjoy choral music, may I humbly (but strongly) suggest 1. Barcelona (Freddy Mercury and Monserrat Cabella, Live at Olympiada Cultural ) 2. Who Wants To Live Forever (Queen Official Video video version) 3. The BeeGees “Too Much Heaven” official video and, since you value knowing the back story (me too) of a good song, you won’t want to miss Queen, “The Show Must Go On”. (I stand by my version recommendations, btw, though I recognize the subjectivity of those choices)

If you truly love harmonies, I thoroughly recommend you listen (possibly react?) to the first auditions of John's Boy's singing a great song called Biblical, or Collabro on Britain's Got Talent. Not going to spoil your surprise reaction to Collabro by telling you the song, can only guarantee you'll love them both.

Milton Keynes I'd say was better than Montreal, and I'd suggest watching the videos through both Dr Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor eyes, you'll find quite a few videos of the two narrating the Montreal Concert which wasn't their favourite, and also going through music videos for some of the songs
