  • Update on the Sabal Minor Louisianas and Birminghams at a NJ Library. There's a small Windmill Palm Tree (Trachycarpus Fortunei). GREAT LANDSCAPING! I hope one day that I can have an area that looks like this!! Zone 6b/7a.

It's a miracle what 3 consecutive mild winters will do for marginal plants!
Places north of Virginia Beach, you regularly see folks trying Needles, Minors and Trachies. What is far rarer is seeing Sabal palmetto as an out-of-zone experiment. Mine, in-ground since 2007 in Wilmington, DE, is an interesting study. It is alive and happy. But cold winters have altered the way a normal palmetto grows. There is no trunk nor hint of one. If you're thinking, "What you got is a Minor then," you'd be wrong. The dead giveaways are the much longer petioles and the costa-palmate fronds. It's VERY hardy. Hardy on a level with my Minors. But it had a few winters with lows 0F to 2F. Those winters fried everything except the spear. And, I believe, the palm, as a defensive measure, "decided" to not put any energy into creating a trunk.

Hey Jim! Please post a video of your palms! It would be great to see it and others can learn from your knowledge.
