Only saved about 5 bucks over a brand new underhood engine bay light fixture (2001 GMC Yukon XL) after paying admission and for the part (which they priced many times more at checkout than the quote I was given over the phone when I called and they had originally said "Yeah, we show we have like a half-dozen of those, and they're about $2 ea"). Then during checkout "Mmm, can't find that part listed, so we'll just go with this part description (and pricing)". Not doing that again.

On the flip side of that, sometimes the parts you seek are already undone and sitting there and you dont have to take them off. I helped my son convert his vw bus from six volt to twelve volt. He kept killing six volt starters using a twelve volt battery. We needed a different starter and flywheel. Went to pick and pull on sunrise ave rancho cordova. They had a small row of bugs and one had a flywheel and a rebuilt starter sitting right behind it. We grabbed it up paid and ate tacos in the parking lot. It was Pick Your Parts, Ecology, and even the U-Pick U-Save in Gardena where the 91 West ends. It was so much fun and you got a lot for very little money. Nowadays, I believe the only one around is Pick Your Parts and they are all owned by LKQ. Admission went up to $3 and recently $5 or $6 and the prices of the parts aren't as economical/affordable as they once were. Depending on the parts, like you said, it's almost cheaper and easier to buy new sometimes. I don't frequent the junkyard as often as I use to. Unless I need something that I can't buy elsewhere. At the register you have to let them know you don't want warranty; they will automatically add warranty fee to all the parts you purchase otherwise even if it makes no sense (like why would I need a warranty for a used door or fender, it's used and I've already looked at it thoroughly before I pulled it). Great video, thanks for sharing!
The warranty scam has been pulled on me three times in the last year . I can't believe it is even legal. I looked at my receipt before I left the yard and caught the added charges that i did not ask for. They refused me a refund . The last time same thing but my wife went back to the yard in minutes and told the management they were taking advantage of an old man with memory problems and made a big stink in front of everyone . She got the refund !!! A total scam

I bought a new belt tensioner for my 98 dodge durango from the dealer about 100.00 but it had to much tension and took out my water pump, I went to pick n pull found one with half the tension for 44.00
I used to go to the yards but the prices have skyrocketed in recent years. With some digging I can usually find OEM new-old-stock for the same price or cheaper. If I can't find it, then it's usually on ebay from someone else who pulled it from a yard for a small markup. It's a shame - going to the yard used to be fun.
Most all of the SOCAL pick your part are huge, which gives you great selection. There is always new inventory, so if you need stuff off a particular matching vehicle you have to move fast in few days before it goes to crusher. Yes prices have gone up, because of inflation and environmental permits. Many parts have a core fee and you pay for a warranty unless you refuse. Wear a hat and bring water bottle as it is hot out there. I get the feeling these messy places will soon be gone.
I went to a pick-a-part and noticed all the alternators were still on the engines. Even when they were easy to pull nobody was taking them. I read through the comments and it seems people are saying new is cheaper on line.. I suppose if it is a pain to get to, people go for the security of new. ...I ended up not buying.
Just bought another rebuilt starter for my hoopti Ford Ranger. Second or third rebuilt over 27 years. Auto Zone has two year guarantee rebuilts now. I did not hesitate because I had to leave my engine running in the parking lot. The first time it wouldnt start I was stranded.
When I was a teen with my first car, 1981, I went to the local scrap yard. You would go around and get your parts. I remember getting a basket full of parts. The owner would look at it and say “ehhh…how about a $20 dollar bill”. That was it. Cheap and very fair. It Sux today. At the You Apart you pay to get in ($2) then get your parts and everything is logged into a computer and you pay about 1/2 of NEW prices!!! This would be fine until you reliaze new dealer prices are horribly over-priced. It’s a bit I of a scam compared to 1981. It’s getting bad enough I’m starting to mostly buy aftermarket parts from China on Amazon. I hate doing that but it’s the salvage yards greed that forces it.
@@janofb I agree but they charge the end consumer that. So the more you buy the more environmental fees you pay. They have just got out of control. Those places are empty now. They pay you 300.00 for your junk car and charge me 100 for a bumper 😂

If you go to their website, most of them pick a part dealers have a price list online. The sad part is that they will charge you a "core" charge on top of the price and if you didn't bring an old part to trade in they will scam you. It's not like the parts are getting returned to a factory to be rebuilt like when you buy a caliper from car quest. They just want the scrap value out of the parts after they already sold it to you. But $2 on a rear rotor for a 2006 Sonata is almost pure aluminum price. A rotor like that is worth less than 25 cents for scrap steel $ 10 bucks for the rotor. I could have bought a new one, no name brand for 15 bucks... Brand New. No core charge !!!

@@gearhead_automotive2031They'd advertise a part for a price, but when you went to pay for it, they'd ask for the core and if you didn't bring your broken fuel pump with you, the price jumped. With some digging I can usually find OEM new-old-stock for the same price or cheaper.
If I can't find it, then it's usually on ebay from someone else who pulled it from a yard for a small markup.
It's a shame - going to the yard used to be fun.
I used to go to pick your part in San Diego, but now is insanely expensive. Some parts can be bought new for a better price.
@@martinnorbeck4657 Go Ranger go!
And after market parts will not function and wind up going to OE parts.
Same in San Diego.
if i see a part i want i whip out me celly and call the office and check the price of that part.
Think that worker remembers fast times movie and created his own Mr . HAND....
The entrance fee of $5 promotes shoplifting!
They should have their prices listed online so you know before you go.
I had to learn the hard way too.
Most of the price increases is due to environmental regulations imposed by the state.
@@janofb I agree but they charge the end consumer that. So the more you buy the more environmental fees you pay. They have just got out of control. Those places are empty now. They pay you 300.00 for your junk car and charge me 100 for a bumper 😂
@@gearhead_automotive2031 Who else were these fees meant to be paid by if not by the end consumer?
@@eamonnmckeown6770it was meant for these establishments to maintain a clean yard. Prevent ground contamination. The yard in Anaheim is really bad and I'm surprised the EPA has not shut them down yet.
@@gearhead_automotive2031 yeah. I saw one in PG County Maryland a few years back that made me embarrassed to be there. But that's PG County for ya'.
Funny they told me it's to offset paying their employees more. They make up prices,no longer is it a set price so you can budget. Whoever is at the window determines the price. They make them up arbitrarily. They are losing money and have fixed the overcharging somewhat.
So, Tell us the prices, please? Today we bought a used Altima rear bumper cover, and Dodge 1500 left ft. Door, both 2013. total=575.00. No, used auto have not escaped big inflation,,,,,
You can buy the bumpers new and already primed on-line for $99 delivered.
@janofb what is the country of origin of a $99 bumper?
I live in PA and that bumper cover and door would cost about $200 @a pick and pull.
How do you know if the part you removed and purchased is in fact a good working part? Or, is it a guessing game, and too sad for you if it is not in working order?
@@caridumont2390 they push a warranty on your parts. The bad thing is what if there aren't any other cars to pull parts off of. You're 100% on point with your statement
Is that all on concrete ?
I stopped going to these places in Europe, it was cheaper to buy a whole car for parts and then getting rid of the rest than buying at a wreckers. Nice to see the same problem you have in the US. It's the government that is putting a lot of rules on these places. Now I live in France and it's here the same as Belgium and Holland, Germany and the UK.
I honestly don't know why people bother with junkyard parts.
@@mysterybuyer3738 I do body parts, interior parts. Engines and transmission always get remanufacturered on my part. Other parts...automotive parts stores always
Entry fee, environmental fee, warranty fee, then the part is the same price or more at most parts stores. Bigger parts are reasonable. But here in Garner NC, LKQ is disorganized and trashed now. Management has ruined it. I haven't been in a couple of years, I went a few weeks ago. I won't be back.
And the place is a ghost town due to their high prices.
I don’t even have to see the rest of the video. Why so expensive? You live in California. Too easy.
They're high priced here in Colorado (eastern California) too.
I went and got like 100 old school fuses and this black chick said they were 1$ each, which a box of 50 cost like 12$ on Amazon.
The PYP yards in N Houston are a mess. Nothing organized, potholes all over the place. Not a fun shopping experience.
You’re in California,explains a lot
Its the hunt that counts!
They aren't overpriced if you are the right color, that isn't a racist comment, it's reality, it's experience
Finding the exact color body panels are definitely a plus
Exactly!
Where are all the wheels,I need a good set for a 2011 volvo xc70, hahaha.
Where is the Simi valley pick a part
I can smell the oil😊
Their prices went up when they and ecology merged..and no longer have their 40% off...go u pick up pull...they still offer weekly sales of parts
@@miguelcastaneda7257 I'm a member and get the notifications. Only issue is they are far away and by the time I drive there. Nor a deal anymore
how much did u pay for all of it ?
I spent a little bit over 450.00
they have been adding ' fee's ' for a long time.. they just added a new fee in the past year....look at the names of the people that own and run pick and pull then you will understand
are they tiny hats!?!? LOL!!!!
Yes. Add on fees.
Every auto scrapyard's prices are different. I haven't been to one in years.
@@EdwardTunilla-zn2ch seems LKQ is the only one way..... and I mean....way out of control with their prices.
@@gearhead_automotive2031They'd advertise a part for a price, but when you went to pay for it, they'd ask for the core and if you didn't bring your broken fuel pump with you, the price jumped. I used to sell a lot of used Saab fuel pumps and when I got a bad one, I'd keep it for parts. One day I brought 5 of them to LKQ. Went out into the yard to pull 5 of them, and when I went to pay for them, they couldn't believe that I had 5 cores! They purchased a big yard in Minnesota (John's Auto Parts). Only took a couple of years to go out of business.
Wow! The first problem is, you are trapped in California. Carry On and survive with your fellow "DIY car lovers!"
There all over priced here in Las Vegas
You can go get new parts for almost the same price.
Pick and pull up here is terrible. They've slowly but surely raised prices for years.
They're so bad that I pulled a head once. Brought it to the counter. She run up each valve, nut, rocker arm, spark plug etc. Head is listed at like 40 bucks. Her total was 140. F-U. Left that shit there.
I always felt took at wrecking yards, bad attitude, lousy service, overpriced.
They wanna charge like new condition 😂 might as well buy brand new it's getting ridiculous and staff don't care
sad is at auction their cheap what i find funny is fact they dont cost lot it transport cost or just inventory wrong cars no one wants them kinda like horse and buggys to old model t junkyard even 50-70s got rember metal prices and just way things are current econmy was every day item now its rare
yep 100% cost but thing is oem is better some times get worse with over head fact is either buy used one or one thats driving in good condition and used one for parts or pay for fix or repair old stuff is waers out okay so not that you did not care about it it is better some times replace both one than other or at same time both engine and transmission then work on inside stuff all the junk you put in
Monopoly greed
i am just going same lucky you got yard but ya not yard its market way metal prices online truth is get new
THE CLICK BATE!! WELL THERE PRICES IS 2/3 THE NEW PRICES SAME AT THE PICK AND PULL RENO !!!
SOMEONE COULD SAY YOURE HAVING A FULL ON CONVERSATION WITH YOURSELF TOO
MAYBE THE EMPLOYEE WAS DOING WHAT YOURE DOING OR ON THE PHONE HANDSFREE
86 FOR A BUMBER IS EXPENSIVE ?????? LMAO,,,, GO TO TGHE DEALER
ever since a Chinese outfit bought them out they've gone downhill
Yes you can talk to your hand.
But not your teeth
"Interesting people" is an understatement.... Three years ago at US Auto Parts in Sterling Whites MI.
We walked around the corner of the isle and found couple vigorously filming a porno in back of a van....
Two go-pros on tripods and they each had the head mount strapped on.....
After a couple minutes my girlfriend speculated we might be being filmed in the background.
So after a couple more minutes we turned around and walked away.....
Wow....LOL someone got screwed that day....😂
6 months ago I was standing in the local Pick-A-Part and my phone rang it was a Walmart delivery driver. She stated the White House is barricaded and the guard doesn't know how or what to do with the package that you want me to deliver and what should I do with it. I said I didn't know what to do do what you think and I hated to have the package returned and the money refunded probably the worst day of my life. But a lot worse for Joe Biden and Joe's staffers as I know that they really could depend on those Depends Underwear I had bought and sent to Joe Biden at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I just thought it was a shity mess all the way around personally
I have not gone to a junk yard for parts in over 30 years because of the prices are too close to dealer prices and factor in your time and labor. Not worth it any more.
Obviously you've never priced a new Factory Fender or a new Factory bumper for a new factory seat I bought Chevy van seats for $15 for 20 years now he's got the passenger seat like brand new you know how much cost to get one recovered right now 350 to 400 not to mention the specialty saw a bolts and screws and fasteners the guy will give you all my hand feels all give me $2 or go to the dealership and they'll charge you $3 a piece if you can get them that's all that was made on that car try and find that original bolt yeah you won't so that them junk yards are a lot of fun too I've gotten radios for 300 bucks for $25 you just you just cheap to begin with
GREED They buy your car for a $100.Turn around and sell it for a thousand in parts
