If you want the biggest fish possible and the healthiest, frequent water changes are the answer. Testing your water for verification of cleanliness with occasional larger water changes. Remember a 20% water change still leaves 80% of the bad stuff still in the tank. Frequent 20% water changes may not be enough in a crowded tank or over feeding. Bacteria grow to the amount of waste present. Just adding more bio balls or substrate does not allow more bacteria. There must be enough food/waste for a certain amount of bacteria. Less food/waste less bacteria as they die.
