I Flew Air North's INAUGURAL FLIGHT to Toronto!

  • On May 10th, Air North, Yukon's Airline, flew their first flight from Whitehorse to Toronto, via Yellowknife!
This new route will have a huge economic impact on Canada's North, as the very first time that the Northwest Territories and Yukon have ever had a direct link to Toronto.
So, given all this, I knew I had to come back to Whitehorse and see what an Air North inaugural flight was like!
With thanks to ‪@BSiskaAviation‬ for the thumbnail photo.

I was on this flight and wasn’t to far ahead from you, it was such a great flight and one of the best in Canada. I was part of the dancing group that danced at Toronto air north event after we landed. So cool you showed are First Nation’s flag (Vuntut Gwichin)

Didn’t realize they’d equipped (at least one) -500 with winglets. Didn’t know it was even an option, if I’m being honest. Looks sharp, and looks like they keep their plane(s) in great shape. 👍🏼 Congrats to Air North, “the little airline that could.”

i actually thought that, being an inaugural flight with ? the company president? on board, they might have run the plane thru the wash bay first. I dare say the majority of people can't tell a -300 from a -800 (or max even) but the time worn look of the wings sure made it look "tired" to my eyes. Still a nice video and beautiful views of the vastness of Canada.

Shouldn’t be a problem to equip a -500 with winglets. I work at Southwest. Most of our 300s had winglets installed except aircraft that were leased or were close to retirement. The -500 has the same wings, same engines, just a shorter fuselage. No problem with winglets. I personally loved the -500! Being lighter than the -300 and having the same engines, it was overpowered sort of speak. Less passengers, better range. A -300 wouldn’t be able to do this flight I can guarantee it unless it was empty of passengers and cargo. I do miss the classics sometimes however the Max makes me realize how good we have it now lol

The company I work for is actually responsible for fuelling Air North when they come to Ottawa. It's always nice having them come in as it's a nice mixup from our usual customers of private, medevac and business aircraft, and the crews are always very pleasant.

Thanks so much for keeping us in the loop about the different Canadian airlines and the new routes and services they offer. A service long overdue in my opinion. I also enjoyed your trip form Calgary-Vancouver with the inaugural flight of the new Lynx Air. Canadians need to know of these services to take advantage of them, and as far as I can see you’re the only person taking the time not just to point them out, but actually fly the routes and report on them. Much gratitude and keep up the great channel.
PS- Believe it or not one of my favourite episodes was your flight fro Edmonton-Calgary on a Small twin engine job, (Saab?), the name of which escapes me at the moment

This is a game changer for the Yukon. I lived in Whitehorse fir 18 years in the 70s,80s and early 90s and it was always a pain having to fly to Vancouver for 2 hours and then start flying east. Give me those old Southwest seats over the new ones anyday.

Same name, but totally different airline than I tried to experience in 1990 when they flew DC-3s and despite booking with mention I had bicycle, despite arriving early and announcing myself to check--in, by the time I had disassembled and packed my bike and luggage, one of the pilots came and told me there was no room for me.
Thankfully the airline next door ( second check in you showed for Air North next to windows) was Alkan Air told me they had a flight but I should first check with their people downstairs. Check in brought me to airside on tarmac with my bike, and I spoke directly to their luggage people who asked how much O could disassemble bike and then they said "sure, we can fot it in, just arrive early". So they sold me ticket.
So I arrive later in afternoon, get my ticet and proceed to the baggage folks on tarmac, disassemble the bike and hand everythiong to them. The aircraft was twin engine Piper PA31 and the whole back was filled with mining equipment and somewhere in there was my bike. I have a photo whyere all you see is the seat protruding from some large bags of stuff :-)
We were only 2 passengers with the pilots.
When I landed at Dawson (amazing landing BTW), the Air North DC-3 was there. At least I got to see it. They had mechanical and made emergency landing and couldn't continue to Old Crow.. had so been loking forward to flying DC-3, but their treatment of me permanently turned me off them, certaintly not the spirit of the North that I experienced on other flights.
(Forst year, they held the Delta Air flight from Yellowkife to Whitehorse for me (came in from late CP flight from Inuvik) and the CP flight attendant told the baggage folks to get my bike and baggage direct to teh Delta Air plane. Passed through the office and onto the plane. I had delayed the lieutenant governor and his wife who had come back from long trip across the Arctic.
The best ? I only bought the ticket after we landed at Whitehorse. Yes they held the plane for someone who had called in a reservation and hadn't paid the ticket yet !
Obviously, today's Air North is different from what I experienced. But there used to be a number of samller carriers in the Yukon (such as Delta Air that did Whitehorse-Yellownife and others) and they all seem to be gone now.
