  • Gain confidence when doing electrical tasks by taking precautions. Knowing how to use a multimeter is helpful when doing electrical repairs and DIY maintenance projects. It checks alternating current (AC) voltage, direct current (DC) voltage, resistance and amperage. Use a multimeter to test electricity in batteries, appliances and outlets. Learn more: thd.co/3ZYejYY
This guide will explain how to use a multimeter safely. It will also outline what a multimeter is, its parts and how to read it. You’ll learn how to choose between an analog or digital multimeter as well.
Safety Tip: Never touch the metal tip of the multimeter while testing with live current. You could get an electrical shock.

Checking AC voltage, keep in mind one hand at a time. Do not touch with two hands simultaneously to prevent electrical circuit flow through your body. Just for safety.

Thank you SO much! I just bought the pocket multimeter (DMM-8132) so that I can DIY change out light switches from toggle to rocker. I've jumped car batteries, so I thought "no problem, I'll just read the instructions." Well, not so simple. I can figure out (or MacGyver) most projects, but electrical work is a bit scary. I can't afford to lose my house to fire. So...once again, thank you for your instructions and presenting them so that they are easy to understand and follow.

also didn't mentioned about how to test continuity in a circuit which is useful to test if a bulb is broken or if a circuit is properly done or a part of a circuit is broken

Anyone knows the circuit diagram of this multimeter?

why it matters what probe to remove first?
on another video "Which battery terminal do you disconnect first?"
they say to remove black first and then red

Why no one talks about amps 🤔

Just before you touched the red and black tips together, ohm out the leads, (around 2:28 ) you had a reading of 0L. But I get a reading of 0 at that point.
Then you say when touching the tips, the reading should be 0.5 ohms or less. Well I get about 24.4. I checked and my settings match yours.
I changed the probes and it's still about the same.
    When I test a 120v outlet, it reads 0.2
when I test 1.5 v battery , I set it to .2 in the DCV and I got a reading of .000 V and it says DC over on the left of the screen.
so then I changed the setting to 1.5v further down in the next area where there is a is symbol of a 12v car battery.
then I get a reading of .000 V and it does not say DC over on the left of the screen.
Weird huh ? My meter is same brand but slightly model.
    Mine is model MS8301A.
any opinions as to what's going on here ?
There are fresh batteries in this meter.
I feel like the knob on the front of misaligned with what ever goes on in the inside back of this thing.
    Maybe a potentiometer.
I think I gotta do some digging.

Try smearing it with jam, maybe it'll work well again.

Ok I opened it up. There are 2 fuses and they are slightly different, and they both SEEM to have no continuity.
Not sure how to test that with my cheap HF meter.

Do you know the value of the resistors that are near the volts and amps fuse? A resistor has burned out and I can't find its value.

Why do you keep unplugging the wires from the unit? Can't you just keep them plugged in all the time?!?

I have this multimeter but the prongs that came with it are not long enough to go into an electrical socket.

    • @daytonagreg8765
      @daytonagreg8765 Před 7 měsíci

Yeah, I thought that too. The “first cap” might be for shipping. When I took that off the lead only exposes the TIP of the lead.
But then I noticed that there was another cap that could rotate and was hard to take off with my fingers. I used a set of plyers to grab it and pull it off.
At first I was wondering why my multimeter only had tiny copper tips unlike all the others.
If unsure ask an professional electrician.

How come my meter shows 140volts when i use the 200v ac settings. However it shows 127volts when i use the 600v ac settings?
