@prestongarvey7014 I've only heard that most ports do allow them but some busy hubs don't. In those cases they unload weapons off the coast and pick them back up on the way out like the old west lol. My understanding is it's generally the freighter's insurance companies disallowing it.

I guess safer to deter climbing abroad. They won't necessarily be good shooter and could expose themselves of getting shot. If there are multiple boats then hard to defend with limited crew. Until pirates start using jet pack to come on-board...

But if you're sailing closer than the 22km limit you're still in that country's borders and hence gun laws apply there. Since most pirates belong to the somalis which attack ships near the suez canal which is very close to a lot of middle eastern countries, they can't carry guns from another nation and say "we don't have weapons" until they return to no man's waters again
