I would assume the U.S. didn't mind paying extra because of the leverage and sway it would give it. The U.S. has always had a big say in world affairs, and it doesn't come free, there is a price to pay to gain such influence. Complete lack of understanding how NATO functions. You don’t join NATO and pay dues, like a country club. The members agree to pay 2% of their GDP on defense. If they don’t - no other country makes up the difference. Just look it up.

Well it’s old, a stop needs to be put to that. Not only do they let the US do the heavy lifting and take the blame but when a conflict does arise they put in the bare minimum to help us out yet we’ve backed them for the past 60 some odd years

I'm from Estonia, once occupied by Russia, we have always paid our 2% and even sometimes near 3% or over not sure, but paid up every year for defense and are not one of the ones who don't pay. We need the protection or Russia will take us. We are next on the list if Ukraine were to fall, it's probably harder for you to understand since you are not from here, but sooner or later they will attack. We have been loyal the entire time and paid up, I don't see why he would leave us to die.

I would assume the U.S. didn't mind paying extra because of the leverage and sway it would give it. The U.S. has always had a big say in world affairs, and it doesn't come free, there is a price to pay to gain such influence. Its simple foreign policy, keep all the sh*t as far from your own door as possible! Trump would probably keep the U.S. in NATO, but he would definitely help Russia by declining aid to Ukraine stating it's not a NATO country.
He was unable to help Putin and Russia by withdrawing aid at the start of the war because luckily people saw through him and he was voted out. He did try to turn popular opinion against Ukraine, but failed. Surprising how many people don't realise the benefits of spending some money through aid and alliance's with other countries.
