- The Thick of It is a British comedy television series that satirises the inner workings of British government. Written and directed by Armando Iannucci, it was first broadcast for two short series on BBC Four in 2005, initially with a small cast focusing on a government minister, his advisers and their party's spin-doctor. The cast was significantly expanded for two hour-long specials to coincide with Christmas and Gordon Brown's appointment as prime minister in 2007, which saw new characters forming the opposition party added to the cast. These characters continued when the show switched channels to BBC Two for its third series in 2009. A fourth series about a coalition government was broadcast in 2012, with the last episode transmitted on 27 October 2012.
The series has been described as the 21st century's answer to Yes Minister. It highlights the struggles and conflicts between politicians, party spin doctors, advisers, civil servants and the media. In similar fashion to Yes Minister, the political parties involved are never mentioned by name, although the context makes clear which is which particularly during Series 4 when the real life government coalition between the Conservatives and the Lib Dems is reflected in the show. Iannucci describes it as "Yes Minister meets Larry Sanders". Journalist and former civil servant Martin Sixsmith was an adviser to the writing team, adding to the realism of some scenes. The series became well known for its profanity and for featuring storylines which have mirrored, or in some cases predicted, real-life policies, events or scandals.
A feature film spin-off, In the Loop, was released in the UK on 17 April 2009. A pilot for a U.S. remake of the show was not successful, but Iannucci was subsequently invited to create Veep for HBO, a programme with a very similar tone and political issues, with the involvement of some The Thick of It writers and production members.
"As dead as Alan Carr in a prison riot" is fucking brutal.
“Ooooooooooh!”
As is Alan Carr's death in a prison riot actually...
Love it
Oooh ‘ello
How did that not make it in! 🤣🤣🤣
"If we haven't got a planet left, we can't blow the fucker up can we?" Malcolm always has a good point
this would do well in a Malcolm tucker/12th doctor edit
too on point, cut it
'It's the Venice of the Midlands, if Venice was fucking horrible.' This kills me
"I hear it's got the best Lidl in the West Midlands"
“I’ve never had a vacation in my life, Phil. In England we go on a fucking holiday, that’s what I’ve had...”
It's worse now, people go on 'annual leave' as if they were in the fucking army and not a call centre.
“Was that for take out?” “Absolutely NOT. It’s a takeaway.”
The deadpan stare just got me
He’d have hated people saying Zee instead of Zed. As do I.
When the deleted scenes are as good as the broadcast.
Malcolm: ..."I am a catfucker"...
Nicola: That's a really good question
“Smells like Henry Coopers catheter”
🤣🤣
Robin is really fucking funny in this, it's a shame she wasn't as ballsy in the final edit
Nicola seems a bit more agressive as well
@@Wegetsu Yea, I feel Rebecca Front was chanelling her "Lewis" character more in these unused clips.
Honestly, what kind of mind do you need to be able to write this stuff. This show is incredibly underrated.
No it's not, it's actually very highly rated. The series has been the recipient of a number of awards, particularly from BAFTA. Series 1 won both "Best Situation Comedy" and Chris Langham won "Best Comedy Performance" at the 2006 BAFTA Television Awards, with Peter Capaldi being nominated for the same award in 2006 and 2008.[38][39] Capaldi won the BAFTA for "Best Male Comedy Performance" at the 2010 awards, with Rebecca Front winning "Best Female Comedy Performance". The series was also declared the "Best Situation Comedy".[40]
Additionally, the series won "Best Situation Comedy" from the Royal Television Society in 2006 and 2010, and won Broadcasting Press Guild Awards in 2006 and 2010 for "Best Sitcom" and "Best Writing Team".[38]
The series was mostly improvised so that's what makes it funny
@@BarryLetts379 Also not true, they wrote everything and did takes as written and then reshot the same scenes with improvisation and the final product is both versions intercut.
Every line is just class.
@Mike Morris It's a bit of both.
Malcolm's "greek rapist" line should have been left in, hilarious.
Agreed.
They couldn't have cast anyone better for this than Peter Capaldi. He has a vicious mouth and a snidey face. Perfect
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Sam. The only human who Malcolm shows humanity too. I love their relationship
"I'm a cat fucker" gets me every time. Unbelievably brilliant.
It's the way he pronounces it as well. Hilarious.
@@BryceDoherty it's almost Welsh
"that's a really good question"
at 25:22 i like to think that peter capaldi was not acting and had infact never lost a game of standy-sitty in his fucking life
"Don't dig up Diana and have Patrick Moore play Nazi drinking songs on her ribs."
Well, quite.
This was one of the finest shows ever made. Peter Copaldi was simply amazing. The lines Malcolm said were just some of the best ever.
He was so good at the adlib that he actually had to apologize to Rebecca Front because he realized he had gone too far insulting something about her and not her character. She wasn’t that upset and thought it kind of funny.
31:50 always the respect for Sam, even mid-tuckering.
"She's a great PA isn't she Sam?"
18:50 The shit sandwich bit just kills me everytime.
This is brilliant. I can see why some of these would be left out, but some other bits are actually better than what made it into the show.
policial correctness gone mental
are you questioning the Nucci?
@@TheRealLazyBear lmao no
the catfucker bit was world class
Yes, some of the lines in this are easily on a par with those which made it into the final cut, outstanding stuff!
I can see why they used the more placid version of Robyn in the show, but I'd have loved to see more of this sharpness
"Yes Massa I a good slave" caught me so off guard she could be so funny
30:53 “for instance, 5yrs ago I said you mustache made you look like a Greek rapist and it did” 😂😂comedy gold I wish they kept that in
I love how you can see Peter losing it at 21:23.
I tell you who tends to get overlooked, Joanna Scanlan. I mean they're all fantastic, but people don't tend to spot how brilliant she is, or don't comment on it.
She plays the part of useless so well
She is in my mind one of the most underrated actresses of our time
26:30 "Great big fat fucking cheese wheel!" is quite possibly my favourite Tucker insult ever😲😂😂😂😂
"Get to it, fuckin' Willy Wonka!"
Having been a SpAd, and a Head of News in a Government department, this is very, very true to life.
Which character do you recognise as most like yourself?
I couldnt remember what the Spartans did, Glen. I'm not as old as you.... i nearly choked
"I can tell you've been away, your threats are including palm trees now."
My heart goes into my throat when ever Ben speaks publicly.
He has epilepsy… of the eyes.
I can see why they left Nicola's more angry scenes out although they are gold as they actually make her look half competent and I think they really wanted to drive in the point of how useless these characters (semi-based on real people) are that are in government. Same with Robin I think they cut the "fucking twats" scene because it made her too real and not a government drone, maybe would have made her character too important and have too many bold personalities in the department.
Season 3 and the rise of the nutters was absolute class but I love the honesty in s1/2.
As dead as Alan Carr in a prison riot.
Sorry Al. I snorted at that one
It’s a shame that Peter Mannion would probably end up getting culled in a Brexit-loyalty test like Ken Clarke
“I’m off for a twix”
I love how well they captured the awkwardness of a dead relationship
Testament to this show’s divine brilliance that its deleted scenes have better dialogue than anything else on TV
"I don't think there's any need to be aggressive." 9:20
Glen is my favourite character from the show.
The deleted scenes from this season are better than a lot of the released content in other seasons. Masterpiece
They really changed Robyn's character between these and the released version, haven't they? Also, these have some of Roger Allam's best ever lines. He really is a devastatingly brilliant actor.
Have a listen to Radio 4's "Cabin Pressure", he's every bit as good in it as he is in The Thick Of It.
Yep. He's fantastic in Endeavour. Great, great actor.
Robyn was pretty sour when it came to doing stooge work in season 2's last episode as well (she seemed to think it was beneath her and that Hugh asking her to do stuff like that was somehow unacceptable just because Terry was back).
@@matt_cummins28 That new "Death in Provence" thing is pretty boring though.
For real, why they ever got rid of that shit sandwich line?!…that was inspired
Ive never lost a game of standy sitty in my life 🤣
3:08
That is the most Malcom thing Glenn has ever said
Robyn shouting twats as she skims teabags into the cupboard is why this show is unbeatable
26:51 is the most intimidating way to ask for a chocolate.
"I inherited you!" I fucking roared 😂
Ollie going through Glen's "options" is brilliant.... "...you could run a whelk stall..." As is the section where they're going through options on policy "booby traps" for the opposition.. "...training your pets to sign for parcels when you're not in..."
That was great as it also shown humanity and warmth given Glenn laughing along. It genuinely felt real like they let Ollie and Glenn improv, which maybe they were.
the deleted scenes are as good as the undeleted scenes. Someone should mash them all together!
When someone bites into a shit sandwich they don’t say “mmm bread” they say “Oh fuck! I’ve got a mouthful of shit! You mental bastard! Why have you filled my sandwich with shit.”
They really should’ve put that in!
"hello childline" underrated
4:30 "I work with your mummy. Well, for now at least."
I absolutely just love the banter between Glen and Ollie at 23:35
Someone's got to take all of these deleted scenes and insert them neatly inside, like a Fundamentalist couple after their wedding, the original episodes. It would be epic. It'd be like Flipper doing blow.
"It's never too soon to go to Lemington. It's the Venice of the Midlands"
Alright, these were all a wonderful bonus to stumble across, but for some reason Glenn doing his answerphone message had me in stitches. And not one bit of profanity was needed.
Me too, I think it's the funniest one here
Yeah me too, it's a wonderful bit of understated comedy
I've never lost a game of standee/sittee in my entire life
I'm stealing that line 😂
‘Smells like Henry Coopers catheter’ is an incredible line 🤣🤣
Some of these just make you feel so sympathetic for Peter.
I can't help imagining when I go to my filing cabinet that he's (Malcolm) gonna be crouched in there eating a lamb shank!
"...Brut...he smells like Henry Cooper's catheter." They really should have left that in.
Robyn is a lot more aggressive here!
Lots of calls like a psycho ex gf with a good tariff 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have stayed up late on school nights to watch repeats of this show...
Would roar with laughter of course I would be shussed.....'do you know what the time is?'
Don't know
Don't care
This is reality porn.😂
Gotta love Robyn Murdoch, they should have used her a lot more. It's a fantastic performance.
14:50 Mannion quoting Tennyson 😂😂 fantastic
Ollie pulling a Malcolm Tucker impression was _fucking great_ lmfao
F.A.C.T: Fiction Actually Contains Truth - 16:53. Well said, albeit sneakily. Fuck I love this show.
"As welcome as a turd on a trampoline" Brilliant!! :)
_"That simply does not compute Peter"_
_God I wish they'd kept that line_ 😅
I can confirm, Leamington have the best Lidls in the West Midlands.
I wish 7:05 had been used in Veep. It would’ve been a perfect line for Selina Meyer. It’s also amazing how similar Rebecca Front and Julia Louis-Dreyfus can be at times.
I love Peter's rant about the shit sandwich.
"Hale and Pacemaker"
🤣🤣🤣
18:43 “You mental bastard” 😂
Ollie’s suggestions for Glenn’s future career is one of the sweeter moments between the two… If Ollie wasn’t a such a slimeball they could’ve been buddies!
After this, I think Bill Tanner probably thought dealing with Military Intelligence assassins was a walk in the park.
17:01 is the best scene with Peter Mannion in.
Stu doesn't even have anything to come back with, it really put him in his place.
Steve Fleming's "You've gone loopy lou Malcolm!" is a genius line
35:28
Best season of Modern Doctor Who :)
‘Slow pedestrian lanes.’
Superb💜
"The end of an era!"
"Yeah, a really shit era, like communism... or britpop."
One of the very few lines from Emma that's actually funny and they cut it lmao
36:11 "Okay, Q.E.D., which is Latin for what the fuck I'm talking about"
"I couldn't really remember what the Spartans did, I'm not as old as you Glenn!"
Glen forgetting his phone number 😂😂😂😂
I completely lost it 🤣💀
"I'm a cat fuuuuckaahh"
"I can toss you aside like an unwanted panettone, which, I'll warn you, is most panettones" hahahaha How did this line not make the cut?
words cannot express how much I love these limeys
Anyone else watch these as sort of another episode 😂
Always liked Rebecca Front, especially in the outfit with the Steve Fleming scene👌🏼
She's peng
i love the talk about Madonna at the end so true
I wish I worked in a place where people spoke to each other like that.
28:40 this is the most harrowing scene ever televised
Thanks for the compilation!!!!
I’m pretty sure a snippet of Malcolm berating Ben at 26:59 did actually make it into the very end of an episode or during the credits perhaps.
The Malcolm Phil bollocking was the finest take down ever. The after math here is classic.
35:36 Motivational Speech of the year
26:22 that insult cracks me tf up every single time
Its so weak i love it 😭
Love all the Phil bits here!
26:12 "house pwice; shock!" 💀💀🤣🤣🤣
"I've never had a vacation in my life Phil. In England we go on a fucking holiday and that''s what I've had."
“This project is as dead as Alan Carr in a prison riot” 😂😂😂
"This projects as dead as Alan Carr in a prison riot" I can't believe that didn't make it in holy shit.
Terri talking In the intercom is just the funniest thing, why was it cut

Some of the deleted scenes are actually funnier than the ones that made it in.

As welcome as a turd on a trampoline, brilliant!
