Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) Bass Cover

  • The People have spoken and I have heard their voice, so it's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" by ABBA which actually appeared on the "Greatest Hits Vol 2" album that came out in 1979. Because it was released on an "anthology" album, Wikipedia wasn't really clear on who played bass on this particular song, but a little further sleuthing leans toward it being Mike Watson. To be honest, it's sometimes hard to tell those guys apart. I wonder if that was a conscious choice on ABBA's part, or if they just happened to get extremely lucky.
    There still seems to be some discussion as to who actually played bass on this track Rutger Gunnarson or Mike Watson. Obviously, I don't have any personal knowledge as to who it was, but here are the two links that led me to believe that it was Mike Watson - freebasstransc... and philwbass.com/...
    That's probably some slapping you hear on the bass during the choruses, but, for obvious reasons, I could not do that.
    I'm playing the Spector Pulse through a SansAmp Para-Driver Ver. 1. The Pulse has had the same upgrades done to it as I had done to my Legend Classic (the sunburst bass) - EMG p/u's (Gold Logo/with Alnico magnets) and a MightyMite HAZ Clone preamp.

      @TJH3113  Před 3 lety +4

      Wow, thanks for the very kind words! You're exactly right, playing every day, even if it's for just a little while, is better than not playing at all. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to just sit down and pick the bass up. If you do that, chances are that you'll be there for a while. I would say that I play with a medium amount of velocity. I used to play much, much harder until I figured out a way to set my basses up so that they "sound" like I'm beating them, without actually killing myself.

    I agree with Dante below. I love the bass line to Money Money Money. I think it's quite tasty and I previously suggested the bassline Money as McCartney-esque. I always found as a bass player that the octave playing so prevalent in pop (Disco) music of the 70s could be actually quite taxing on the ligaments in the wrist! Especially with all the proper stretches. I understand that repetition strengthens that but when you're used to doing traditional rock songs, these disco tunes wake you up a bit. Looking forward to your cover of Money Money Money. I happen to play in three bands. A hard rock band, A Stones and Petty tribute, and a dance band. But I am fascinated by ABBA. Mostly it's the girls' harmonies that are siren to me but I like also they way they crafted their songs. Pop, yes perhaps, but all forms of music have their place. And the bass is integral to it all! Thanks Troy!

      - Yeah, Disco bass-lines can be a wakeup call if you're not used to playing them. "Gloria" by Laura Branigan is a great example of that. "Last Train to London" as well!
      - Wow, you're a busy guy! I know a fellow who is in a Petty/Fleetwood Mac tribute which is pretty cool too.
      - Yeah, it was the incredibly catchy melodies that got me hooked on ABBA until I discovered how great some of the bass-lines were!

    The Musicianship and Singing of ABBA seemed to me to always be overlooked because of the genre and style of the tunes. The same could be said for many of the "Bubble Gum music" from back in the very early days of The MTV Music Age! I dated a gal in my early 20's who turned me on to a ton of music that could have slipped on by me and ABBA was one of those "Surprise's" that I was fortunate to hear and enjoy! I was STILL a Huge RUSH Fan and of course Bowie, Steely Dan, and The Doobie Bro's, and many others too...but when I was out of the public eye of my pals....my gal showed me a musical life that I might have missed! Я согласен. Я вырос на прогрессивном роке - Rush, Yes, Kansas, Jethro Tull... и никогда не оказывал ABBA того уважения, которого они заслуживают. Их песни являются прекрасными примерами первоклассного написания песен, которые содержат первоклассные басовые партии.

      That's great to hear Daniel. It's good that you have a wide appreciation for different types of music at such a young age. To be honest, that didn't happen for me until I was much, much older. As far as the polls go, I always struggle to decide what to post, or if to post anything at all. So, when I'm really stuck, the polls help take the process of selecting a video out of my hands.

    Y'all might not know this, but Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad is a Lebensborn SS breeding program child from occupied Norway. After the war, Lebensborn mothers and children faced a horrible backlash from the people of Norway. Pretty unfair to take it out on the kids. Frida was raised by her grandmother who took her to Sweden where the child could be raised in peace. It helped that her grandmother spoke Nynorsk rather than Bokmal as the former is more similar to Swedish than the latter.
    Frida's success and fame gave her some leverage to help the plight of Lebensborn children in Norway. In Quisling's Norway women had few options, sometimes to the point of survival. And when options get that narrow, I think notions of "consent" kinda become the boundaries of what the more morally sound among us would consider adjacent to rape. Not everyone in Norway saw it way, but these were the rich and connected. They never faced the hard choices. They never do.

    I have been enjoying your videos for many months now and continue to be impressed with your skills/abilities and your collection of instruments. I have to admit to seeking out the videos you have done with your Ric and have wondered how you choose which bass to play for a particular song. You get great sounds out of all your basses.
    Thanks for sharing with us!!!

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  Před 3 lety

      Wow, thank you! I have to tell you, the Ric is one of my least liked basses, for a lot of reasons that I won't get into now. Most often, I just use the bass I happen to be playing at the time. Once and a while I'll use a particular bass because I think it will suit the song well. I don't tailor my sound to the songs, I just get a sound I'm happy with and go with it. Also, once and a while, a particular bass just doesn't work as well as I'd like - either because of its sound or how I play it, and those are the songs that get the unlisted, alternate versions.
