With it being so shrouded in secrecy and abstracts I just will be nope-ing out on knotted locks. I say this after watching SEVERAL videos that felt like they were filled with nothing
I agree. It’s just a lot of talk with no demonstration or explanation how it’s better. My gf got it done and all she said was that it was not as tight and neat as a retie so she would have to get used to it.
I think we need more people trained by Melissa Blake to document their story. EnToi Beauty DID NOT DO Knotted locs she just made up what she thinks Knotted Locs is without ever getting trained by Blake. I think Sisterloc loctitians are shook by the potential value proposition of knotted locs which would mean they lose lots of clients and money if someone is only getting their locs done 4 times a year. So Im not surprised that Sisterlocs technicians going HARD against Knotted Locs. Im reserving my judgement on Knotted Locs until more knotted locers start documenting their outcomes.

Melissa never said that knotted locs couldn’t be done on fine hair… She actually said knotted locs are better suited for fine hair rather than interlocking…I wish she would show more of her work…

Pauline I had sister locks installed three years ago...hated the reties...looked at people who had sisterlocs for years and saw all kinds of hair states that I didn't want for mine...So I transitioned to knotted locs last July...just by common sense reasoning...I didn't consult with anyone but my innermost being...I have no issues with them... haven't spent a minute or a dollar in the salon since then... some of y'all seem to worry too much...I thank Melissa for the idea...it is definitely an option for people who do not worship hair or hairstyles...I have worn crew cuts enough times to know that hair grows..
Thanks for the video! There is too much that we don't know about the technique to blindly experiment on our hair. It seems like the knotted locs creator is gatekeeping, but I can kind of understand since that would be proprietary to her. I would not want to be an early adopter of this technique because I want to see more real life examples of what this looks like.
Yeah, I have some what fine hair. Did consult with Melissa and she said I could do knotted locs. She never said anything about any texture of hair being unable to do knotted locs! Had the consultation three weeks ago! I did not schedule an appointment to do the actual training. I questioned what the actual technique looked like on someone head. She didn’t show me any clients with the knots. I questioned how my locs would look with the knots! Her response was then you’re not ready for knotted locs. That if I’m concerned about how my locs would look. Then I’m not ready! Ridiculous comment! I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to see how the technique looks on one of her clients head.
Yeah, it seems like you have to go in blindly and just let your hair do what it do with her method.

@@chet0388 why wouldn't her hair look like Tunisia's locs with that logic? Your locs will look like your locs, and they should look slightly fuller. I have started about 20 new locs around the periphery of my hair and some in between. I am very pleased and love having my own in-house maintenance schedule and $$$$ in my pocket.

While I don’t think we can know what everyone’s hair would look like based on a vague description of density (there are so many variables), I think it would be foolish to expect to end up having TAs mane so far down the line. She has had SLs for over 10 years and KLs for about 1.
@@mrs.dillard3860 because I’ve been following Melissa for years and I have seen how her locs changed and broke off when she first came out with knotted locs. Back then they didn’t have that name. This was around the time she was no longer a sisterloc consultant and she was very hurt by it. I also believe her hair would look more like Melissa’s is because Melissa has been doing the knotted locs on her own hair for the longest. The other lady just started. Are you ok?
I can wash my hair everyday. I can use oil and conditioner on my knotted locs. I can interlock if I want to with no tools fingers only. I let my locs guide the process. I can do my knots in the comfort of my home. My follicles are healing therefore new locs have to be started. Interlocks are just a cultivated knot eventually you can not tell the difference.
I don't like it that is definitely a lot of work. Plus the length gets shorter. No thanks I'll stick with interlocking.

Yes!I'm so interested in the technique and she keeps saying she wants to give us hair freedom but gatekeep the method she's freeing us with. It's been so frustrating and disingenuous.

@@mai-linhmainor5965This is just how Sisterlocks started out and has maintained a good bit of brand integrity. Sometimes, gatekeeping is a necessity. Just view a few videos by the Microlocs creator. She is working from behind, in a sense, to reign in the brand but that window has closed. Thus, in most cases, Microlocs will always be viewed a bit differently and at a split lower standard than SL. I have DIY ML and would never buy into the SL brand. But I hope you get what I’m saying.

I started transitioning to knotted locks 6 months ago. I did not take the class. My knots are spaced about an inch apart and the loose strands between the knots have locked. I haven’t lost any locks. I chose to transition because the parts of my grid were getting wider the longer I interlock and the longer my hair gets the thinner it looks. Knotted locks immediately gave me volume.

@@GizelleQuant As someone else posted it’s like a slip knot because new knot is made closer to the scalp than the previous knot which has to slip through. Sounds more complicated than it is.

Yes!! Awesome analysis! If you look at Blake’s locs they look as if they’re broken off. I’m not sure if that’s why she adds colored materials to her hair or not.
No that's just her style. She claims the breakage was from before she started knotting. In skeptical because it is common knowledge that a know weakens a ropes strength by about 50%. I know we're not pulling sleds with our locs but.... We aker is weaker.This is the info I'm looking for. Will it increase the propensity for breakage?

From what I heard from one off Melissa's youtube page, she does not help you start your locs remotely. You are supposed to come to get training with your locs already started. Knotting your locs with her is for maintaining your roots.
I have not taken the training but have tried the knotted locs technique to retighten my 16 year old braidlocs and I liked how I was able to get hair that was growing away from my loc causing thinning to be incorporated back into my locs. Doing that from last summer to now has caused the locs that were thinning to thicken right back up with absolutely no slippage. No longer struggle to keep my roots neat and strong!
Over the years there are sometimes locks that have thinner areas. I have successfully placed a small knot on those locs and had them tighten up and feel secure. for reference, I have medium density normal to high porosity small circle/4c hair😊.
How did you figure out how to do it? Do you need two hands, or do you do it as if you're knotting the end of thread for sewing? Or what?!

Thank you for the video. I've had my Sisterlocks for 12 years. I took the retightening class; however, I prefer to see a loctician and I was on a 6-week rotation. I have watched several of Melissa's videos. She speaks about alopecia because of Sisterlocks and the grid/parting, and thinning locks. Okay, I get it.
Q: What about patterned baldness? Some of us are loosing hair because of the cycle of life.

I kinda understand where Melissa is coming from with the knotted locs in terms of the thinning of the hair some Loctician inter loc to tight I know of one person who has to take pain killers after her reties this is not normal eventually she will experience thinning and damage to her scalp,with the knotted locs you can start from the base and then 2strand twist the rest of the hair that’s what I did and I am loving it the thing I like most is that my scalp dose not look like a pluck chicken with the knotted locs verses the sister loc freshly reties ,because I have knowledge of hair and scalp care I would recommend the knotted loc if you don’t want to loose your hair to thinning Melissa probably just needs to explain her self in more detail so that some people get it cause not everyone has knowledge in hair ,and show more photos of the knotted loc on her client and stop being so defensive when asked questions maybe she thinks the sister loc community is coming at her so her defenses go up ❤

I tried some knotted locs on extensions. I did slip knots alternating sides. Kinda gave a interloc look

I tried three of them on my own locs starting at the roots. When I tried to unknot them, it took about fifteen minutes..... for EACH ONE. I'll stick to the interlocking technique.
I also looking into this method and from what I understand she start at the base and works her way down but not all at once but she recommends those who have sisterslocks or microlocks she want them to have 3mos of new growth. however her method is still not very clear. I believe she does she one to two knotts starting at the base every 3mos and she has also use a inter lock tool

Thank you so much Pauline! Very informative. Some women are just concerned about thinning out with sisterlocks. As you once said it’s the quality of the retie. I have seen my mother’s hair thin out with sisterlocks but she was getting painful reties. I’ve also seen women with it for a long time with no thinning except for around the edges. It will be interesting to watch how knotted locks looks in years to come as it’s new.

Yeah, unfortunately, with sisterlocks and Microlocs, some people are so concerned about every strand being in place that they sacrifice quality reties for a snatch picture on social media. Don't get me wrong, I love a clean grid and neatness, but there's a way to do that without pulling people's hair out. We have to consider tension every step of the way.

I have DIY traditional locks that I literally parted with my fingers and started in a two strand twist. I have about 92 I'm 2 and 1/2 years in and damn they look amazing. Text me 45 minutes to do a retwist after I wash my hair. I don't do hairstyles because when I came into this game the most important thing was my hairline. I've never won a wig or weave or glues or anything and I don't want a cringy hairline.
I have no interest in sisterlocks but I have been following this knotted lock 'drama'. Just from the outside looking in I don't understand why so many people jumped into this sisterlock system without doing the research. I literally research months watching as many channels I could and picking out about 3:00 that made sense and came up with my own plan from there. It seems like the sisterlocks organization started something and then continue to take money while not helping those who supported the brand. It seems like they literally just take the money certify anybody, and they don't even have to have a cosmetology license and just spit them out without really showing folks how to take care of their hair. I see all of these desperate women and I don't understand why people committed to this hairstyle without knowing every aspect of it from start to finish. I just keep seeing why you shouldn't get sisterlocks, the sisterlock community is toxic, my hair's falling out, nightmares about kitchen table installers.
Every time I see sisterlocks I literally cringe because the roots look so stressed and skinny and fragile. Almost painful. It seems like there's a grungy underground of greedy folks and a lot of desperate unhappy people. You guys need to get together and demand that the sisterlocks brand help you with a solution. I wouldn't be so quick to knock the knotted locks because what sisterlocks is giving you also isn't working for everyone. It's a hairstyle and a brand that literally hogties and holds you guys hostage.
I'm truly not trying to be rude or uncaring but Way too many sisterlock wears just didn't do their homework. They saw it and they thought it was cute and wanted it.
That sisterlocks brand needs to do better or you guys need to start some kind of class action lawsuit because they are literally just certifying anybody. The sisterlocks brand fiduciary responsibility is to make sure that their consultants are fully trained, And first and foremost should be the licensed as a cosmetologist through their respective state then moving forward and completing a certificate program through the sisterlocks brand.

Thank you for making this video, its very informative and illuminating. What I also noticed from the few videos/photos that I've seen, is that knotted locs tend not hang straight, the loc has kinks where it has been knotted.
I was thinking about this too! I’m thinking it has something to do with how you place the knots. Looks like, even from this video that placing the knots closer will make the locs straighter. I’m looking forward to taking the training one day.

I saw the videos from Melissa about knotted locs; all she does is praise them, but keeps the method tightly sealed (unless you pay for the class). She has no videos posted that shows people how to do it. My hair is fine, so I will just stick to interlocking

Knots are not cool because if you don’t get the knot in the right spot it can cause weakness in the loc; which will eventually cause loc breakage

@brittneer8940 you are welcome to your opinion. I am a loc technician; I have seen folks put knots in their locs and didn't have them placed correctly and it caused the loc to weaken above and below the knot until it eventually fell off. Enjoy your evening

Definitely do more research on it. As more people get it, you'll be able to see how it does over time. One lady commented that she has gone hair and she uses the knotted loc technique. But I'm curious to see what it looks like because some people think they have fine hair when they don't.

Sisterlocks are retightened every 6 to 8 weeks. Knotted locks are knotted every 4 months. How is it more work?
What I don’t understand if the interlocs and knotted locs are the same size, how does that mean you can go a longer period without retying as she says??it’s the same amount of new growth, and length of the loc so why can you go say 6months

And, if you are doing the knotted locs on fine hair and you create a knot towards the roots, what's going to happen is the knot is going to be a bit heavy at the base and now you risk the chances of thinning at the roots.
Knotted locs is for people with fine, low density hair who wants to transition from sister locs to knotted locs. You can not get knotted locs if you have medium to thick hair.
I contacted her about 3yrs ago to enquire about it, the information she gave was very vague & then the cost to get her to train you to do your own hair was outrageously expensive.
I contacted her too a few months ago and the course is £650.

This is what I thought. It's great for fine hair. Melissa has fine low density hair.
I have high density, thick hair and transitioned to knotted locs.
Definitely too much room for error with a knotted loc. I knew that based off doing knots in other things it’s hard to get knots to go where you want them too. I think it also brings good area for lint and debris just like an extension braid. The knot always has dirt and debris.

They both have CZcams channels but the process does seem to be an enigma videos about it are very short quick glimpses of what it is unlike micro locs there’s a whole plethora of videos & information available. Nice video I’m glad you spoke about them but I’ll stick to my diy interlocs as I can control them, knotted locs look way too fiddly & I assume would result in slower hair length results as it takes more hair to creat the knots. According to what I've read, heard, and seen knotted locs are ideal for low density fine hair. Melissa Blake created the process as a solution to problems with her own fine low density hair breaking/suffering due to standard sister locs practices at the time. Her own hair is fine and low density> Per Ms. Blake, her locs would often pop off during her reties. As a way to mitigate breakage, she found herself putting knots in weak locs, and the technique evolved from there.
Wondering where you got that it's not good for fine hair; was it from Ms. Blakes, or is this part of your personally theory based on your knowledge of natural hair. 'm going to revisit Ms.Blakes' content again. I've been following her and her content for approximately 1 year now, and this is the first I'm hearing this.

You are correct, length is definitely less noticeable because more is length is used during the knotted locs process, BUT, it's my understanding knots help give weight and volume to the locs, which is why this is a viable option for those of us with lower density and finer hair strands. In addition, all people with knotted locs are able to go extended periods of time between re-knotting because the knot at the base/root does a much better job of keeping the locs separated over a longer time span as opposed to interlocking, and re-twisting.
Definitely not for everyone in terms of visual appeal, but according to the inventor of the process it's for anyone with kinky coily hair even those of us with fine strands and low density. Even those of us with mixed heritage hair:

Like many here, I don't care for her abbreviated content with all of the dizzying overlays, transitions, unnecessary text and esoteric voice overs. And I don't like that her process is shrouded in secrecy. I understand it's also a money making venture, but one of her pet peeves about sister locs was the secrecy surrounding the process, tools, and products during its earlier stages. So her doing something very similar now seems a little disingenuous.
My two cents, I think her technique adds a ton of value to the loc'ed hair community. She's shared many examples of new and old clients proving her methods efficacy. I look forward to seeing more people over time reporting their experience.
If putting knots in the hair like this was a good idea, Africans on the continent would have been using this technique for centuries, the fact that it has been speaks for volumes. I stand corrected if anyone can suggest any tribes in Africa that have been using this technique. However I do know that interlocking is a long standing tradition in African hair styling.

Spaces between kl are just as bad as holes in sl. May not see it now but down the line it'll snap most likely.

Melissa's hair does not look like knotted locs work for her, so I have difficulty being convinced this technique works.
I found both influencer and creator about a year before i took the Sisterlocks class, 2yrs out of hair school & licensed. Had a teacher with Interlocks that came to school on his Saturdays off to allow us to learn on his hair for the students who wanted to learn. My Mom had Sisterlocks, 5yrs in & i HATED them! Hated them even more cuz i was coning across & talking to womrn STRUGGLING in their journey. Questions i would ask about the system, she couldn't answer. I would ask what does your consultant say. Nothing. What does she tell you to maintain them. Nothing. What rhe tool look like?🤣 I never see it,its tucked un her hand. 😯 What??? So, i went online looking,, how i found them & others. Then, my mom wanted to take the class, while she was in natural hair school. Yes! I am or used to be 😭 really nosey & i wanted to know the
to know "the secrets!" 😂🤦 What I gathered from the knotted locs was they were creating something to remedy some problems we PROFESSIONALS see that can be rectified. I'm ALL for it. The Influencer was & is about you taking control & being accountable for YOUR hair. Yaaassssss!
Class day 1, everyone was smiling, happy, couldn't wait! 😂 Me & my mom STILL talk about this almost 10yrs later, those smiles turned into frowns & looks of lacking understanding & frustration. Out of 20 something students ONLY 5/6 of us were licensed or have been to school. I went exclusively to help my Mom's hair, cuz as a Pro ummm, nah my Mama ain't walking around looking like that, to learn the system, & how to repair them. 1at thing, one of our teachers ONLY did repairs, nothing else, soooo I picked her brain. I would ask questions & most of her responses was, you'll see it when you get there. 😯😭 Oooh I was HOT! With time, she was 1000percent correct. But, what about those without prior knowledge &/or experience. The class is fast paced, so I completely understood those lacking.
After the class, I was still mad .. Cuz y'all, IT AIN'T NO SECRETS 😭😂 Honestly, it's lack of understanding, period! So, yes there are consultants out here messing women up unbeknownst to them, doing what they were taught, not purposely,. Ok, so #1 thing I saw was loc sizing. Y'all! Not only does curl pattern & density matters, POROSITY MATTERS. Which is stated in the class, or my class.. Lifestyle matters! Sebum production, scalp issues, MEDICATIONS, habits &/or lack of, last but not least, NUTRITION! My class was taught the lower the density, the bigger the loc, & exceptions CAN BE MADE!
I would be rich if I had $5 for every woman I talk to didn't get a Sisterlocks kit, knew what a kit was, or even was advised on alternative products. Clarifying shampoo assists the locking process. & When I ran out of that I used Tresseme's. With NO problem.
I think when Sisterlocks was created, there wasn't an anticipation that women with damaged, fine, broken, medications that causes hair & scalp conditions, etc, my opinion! Because, those are who's suffering. Look at your consultation book from the class, those ladies had HIGH/VERY HIGH density. One of our teachers locs were the size of needles, very long, very beautiful. So, I knew coming into my own journey, I asked for the biggest sized locs. I have fine, bleached, colored hair/locs so those little ones ain't making it in my hair.
Speaking of color: Sisterlocks wasn't created for bleach &/or colored hair, so there's only a recommendation to use the reconstructor.
Back to the Influencer, she has HIGH/VERY HIGH density, small sized Sisterlocks, she colors her hair, & likes to stretch out her retightens. I was happy for her when she transitioned into knotted locs. She was a great candidate! You can see a difference & that new color she has, Yaaassssss!
I recently got a Sisterlocks client that is balding, only for scalp treatments. #1 never heard of the kit, which I think also has herbs in it to promote growth (angers me), on high blood pressure meds, & isn't consistent with her shampooing. Consultations MATTER! Honestly, she was NOT a candidate for Sisterlocks, AT ALL! Needless to say, hadn't seen her in 6mth, her hairline is now to the middle of her head. Absolutely heartbreaking! I don't even do those small, medium sizes on the card, haven't gotten a candidate yet. Lol
Then I started testing theories about Sisterlocks, this is not for the women with lush forests, if you have fine hair, low to medium density, you CAN NOT stretch your retightens. Your hair needs to consistently put up in a pattern. More than the many times I have bleached & colored my locs, this is what took me out. 🤣 And I didn't color my hair the whole year & some change I tested it. I was losing locs left & right. (Even tho, I repair I don't, so I can show them)
But, it wasnt until I started bond building hair is when I mastered it. I say that to say all this, without the foundations & science of
of hair, I would've cut there off ages ago. It is also my recommendation that if you do have Sisterlocks & have all these things going on, you should have a Cosmetologist that you see periodically. Remember, Sisterlocks creator challenged State Board, hence not needing the schooling. (This isn't not knocking it, at all
But, what I do love is, the women creating new systems, adding alternatives AND options have the science. There's nothing wrong with transitioning, either. It's YOUR journey, not hers, & hers isn't hers. But, we all here to learn! Ok, so now that I have mastered my hair, I LOVE SISTERLOCKS!!! 😭🤣😂

I loved SL ML. But after a lot of research I decided to transition from SL to KL. As soon as I saw thinning around my crown. I started Jan ‘23.
Best decision I made. I havé fine haïr which it’s directed towards. Now I see it’s flourishing and looks much thicker. It’s for Diyers who want to maintain their own hair so you decide when you do it. But it’s 4x a year.
It’s for fine to medium hair and people who do not care about the grid as your hair grows outside the grid with SL. Melissa created this to give women freedom to take control of their own hair. But it’s not for everyone.
She has a reel or her fb page where it was done on thicker hair and it looks good.
I always suggest to do your own research.

@@EnToiBeauty Hiya Yes, sure, I only just started last year Jan '23. Therefore, I do not have many knots along my Locs. As I only do 1knot per loc every 4mths and leave it.

How far apart are your knots? Is technique in the video similar to your technique?
I wish ppl would just take better care of their hair. The hair loss is inevitable if you don't take care of your hair. I know what my hair can endure, and I act accordingly.
A lot of it is diet and habits, but instead of focusing on that, some are blaming sisterlocks and their consultants. Some clients don't need to come every 4 weeks. In fact, I don't think anyone should be on such a tight regimen after the 1st year. Some people already have been experiencing hair loss before getting locs and haven't made any change to their life, but expect that to magically stop when they get locs. It's bizarre.
Some is also genetics and medications. Every time my blood pressure medication changes, my locs change. Also, I recently had surgery and my locs are shedding some. But I am researching some options. ❤
I don't like it for several reasons and that's too much work, plus the length gets shorter. No thanks ill stick with what i know that is interlocking.

The knotted lock sounds difficult not practical at all. It does not make sense at all.
The fact that Melissa is charging people $600 to teach them to do this on their OWN hair is ridiculous. Her hair looks broken off and damaged. She should be ashamed of herself.
Considering, once you have the knowledge, it is your to do with as you please, what would you like to pay?
Keep in mind, the price of a sisterlocks class which is also a technique you can do in your own hair and the price is so high she established payment plans.
Your mention is the first time I’ve ever seen a statement on the KL Training fee. To be honest, I’m relaxed that $600 is the fee and it makes me want to get my training before the price rises with popularity. Thanks doll!
Just want to make one more comment, now that I have viewed your complete video. In my opinion: Although you say repeatedly, she won’t teach you the technique and you haven’t seen it done, I think it’s improper for you to do a demo and give specific advice and info. You didn’t offer a single bit of positivity about the technique. My hope is that viewers will form only the take away that this video is solely based on assumptions not a single fact, but I strongly doubt it.
Your video does a lot to discourage people from trying out the method and to damage Melissa’s brand. My fear is, unless she decides to teach professionals, many more videos like yours will surface.
Nite: I do not know Melissa and have not taken her training but I plan to. I will be switching between knotting and interlocking, just a Melissa has said is possible.
