ਸ਼ਹੀਦ ਊਧਮ ਸਿੰਘ | Shaheed Udham Singh| شہید اُدھم سنگھ|शहीद ऊधम सिंघ (26 December 1899 - 31 July 1940) was an Indian revolutionary belonging to Ghadar Party and HSRA, best known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of the Punjab in India, on 13 March 1940. The assassination was done in revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919. Singh was subsequently tried and convicted of murder and hanged in July 1940. While in custody, he used the name Mohammad Singh Azad, which represented his anti-colonial sentiment.
Giani Kesar Singh, the author of this historical novel was a multifarious personality, Giani Kesar Singh was a voracious reader, a great freedom fighter and a prolific writer who authored about 25 historical novels in Punjabi, especially on the Ghadar Movement.
He served as a Civil Administrator of the Indian National Army (from 1943 to 1945), secretary, Shiromani Akali Dal (1948 to 1957) and was the guide of Golden Temple for two years.
He authored many historical novels outlining lives of great martyrs like Shaheed Udham Singh, and Madan Lal Dhindra. He breathed his last in Canada on September 21, 2006 at the age of 95. His last epic-length novel ‘Hathiarband Inqlab’ (Armed Revolution) was published by Singh Brothers, Amritsar, in 1998.
