      I'm with Vince here that the "leaks" were from Wizards themselves. Images look like they were shot using a shaky potato. No one takes pics that bad unless they're trying to make them look terrible, maybe ran them through a filter (like we're seeing on the rumors subreddit with someone trying to pass off proxies with a deep fried filter over them as "leaks")

    A point not addressed about Cthonian Nightmare is that it is now interactable. Recurring Nightmare resolves and can be activated without passing priority (returning it to the caster's hand therefore never presenting a window for on board interaction). The new card has an ETB trigger that must resolve before the activated ability can be used (because it is sorcery speed and the stack won't be clear if the ETB is still on the stack). The ETB to add 3 energy forces the card to pass priority around and gives players the opportunity to interact with the onboard enchantment.

    Null Elemental Blast sounds pretty good in Commander with monocolored decks. With all the colorless utility lands you can run in a monocolor deck, it's pretty easy to pay for it, and its effect is really desirable when playing monocolor outside blue. The other reason that Chthonian Nightmare is a "fixed" version, is because of the ETB trigger. It means that you can actually blow it up with a Disenchant effect when it enters. A part of what made Reoccurring nightmares so annoying was because of how it worked with priority meaning you never would never get a chance to target it with anything besides a Counter-Spell.

    • @lancesmith8298
      @lancesmith8298 Před měsícem +4

      And on the flip side, just so we’re not gonna sit here and pretend that the card can’t be good, the fact it’s based on Energy also means that the value gained from playing it also isn’t going to go away without very specific hate. Even without the potential of more support for energy, playing your second copy probably means you can immediately come back with something that costs 6 or less mana, for 3 mana, or play out three turns of four drops for 3 apiece and only one card. This isn’t even touching on proliferate, mind you.
      The card can be interacted with, but it can come out the gate swinging, and every time you successfully get rid of one, the next copy gets scarier.

    • @satansamael666
      @satansamael666 Před měsícem +1

    • @nobodyshome6792
      @nobodyshome6792 Před měsícem

      The thing is you are not considering deck support.
      Current energy decks can hit between 4 and 15 energy on turn 2.
      People are definitely going to be dropping 8+ cost bombs using this on turn 2 or 3.
      You will definitely see turn 2-3 Blightsteel or Karn Reforged or Liberty Prime.
      It is going to be abused so much harder than Recurring Nightmare was, despite it supposedly being the "fixed" version of the card.
      Recurring Nightmare requires a creature sacrifice. So it actually doesn't provide any card advantage when used. This new one actually creates CARD ADVANTAGE.
      Recurring Nightmare didn't produce a resource advantage (by itself) whereas this new on does. (Energy counters).
      Seriously though.
      Turn 1. Swamp, ritual, sol ring, Nightmare->1 drop, recast nightmare -> 5 drop.
      Turn 1.
      Literally something that Recurring Nightmare CANNOT accomplish.
      Have fun with those turn 1 Karn Legacy Reforged or Forgemasters. Or turn 2 Blightsteel or Wurmcoils.

      @@satansamael666 I see the dockside recursion loop, but I'm not sure this will see much play in Blue Farm. By itself, it isn't going to generate much interaction. Other than as a hate-bait. And it just doesn't APPEAR to be as powerful as it actually is to experienced players. (As can be seen by almost no one thinking it is actually busted, aside from me and you.)
      Back in the day, I was an early abuser of Recurring Nightmare. It took a YEAR of competitive play for Recurring Nightmare to get banned. In my eyes, this is actually a more powerful version, despite it supposedly being the fixed version.
      As I said. This new one actually creates card and resource advantage, whereas Recurring Nightmare didn't. (Don't get me wrong, you can create advantage using Recurring Nightmare, however this new one creates that advantage alone.)
      That requiring a sacrifice creature is the reason Recurring Nightmare wasn't banned quickly. It has a sacrifice cost, and was printed during a time where token creatures were not commonly played or used. (At the time, almost every card that created token creatures was rare, costly in mana, or not even legal in tournament play....)
      Honestly. Recurring Nightmare is way more powerful now than it was in 1998.

Arguably Flare of Denial is an improvement from the BS they did with evoke elementals because you have to actually commit resources to the board (and therefore probably spend mana) to have it available to free cast.
